Seems to me that they ran out of time and money about halfway through. You arrive in Bakbattahl, you're suddenly just a few quests away from finishing the game. It feels weirdly rushed. Game would have been incredible, albeit very long, if they had fleshed out the Bakbattahl quests a little more, and made Volcanic Island a proper third act.

My absolute dream game would be one that has the world of Dragon's Dogma with the exploration, big monsters, and limited fast travel combined with the storytelling of something like Witcher 3 or something. Give me a robust RPG story with a big story and a lot of time with characters for me to care about. To be honest, I didn't give a single gently caress about any character in DD2 (my pawn aside).

Haunting you until no 8 arrives.
I still really adore the credits music.

Particularly combined with panning through the scenes showing most of the major characters you met if you did their quest, though I'm sad the two sorc maisters didn't get one and I feel they should have, similar to how Beren gets one if you got a happy ending for his quests. It's all just so... perfectly melancholic and bittersweet.

It's got to have some sort of weird behavior where affinity spikes and decays quickly. You can do someone's quest and shower them with gifts, but just do an escort quest for someone on the road a week later and they're #1 now. That was a thing in DD1 at launch iirc, where the affinity bonuses from selling and buying from merchants were oddly high so yo always ended up with a merchant or innkeeper as your beloved.

Yeah, Brandt my #1 and my only interactions with him was to do his story quests and then escort him once during the endgame. Baffling. Meanwhile I showered Wilhelmina with gifts for days and she was like #3 for me.

I had a similar thing Ulrika was the one kidnapped by the dragon (which I am assuming is your #1 at the time it happens) but by the credits she had fully dropped out of my top 3. I never found her at all in the endgame so it's possible she just died at some point but I'm not sure when that would have happened. Sara was my #1 in the credits which made sense because I was still interacting with her a lot in the endgame to do upgrades and such, while elf sister and brother were my #2 and 3 which made less sense since I didn't really interact with them much after finishing their respective storylines but it's possible they also get an affinity bump from their endgame quest.

It's getting to the point where I can't stand my pawn being silent. Hopefully if I swap him from straightforward to simple and remove the aphonite specialty he'll still be sufficiently agro.

I miss the calm voice but it's just not acceptable for a warrior to hang back instead of running in to wreck poo poo and calm is just too hesitant.

Although... the lady version of the straightforward voice isn't godawful. Maybe it's time for a more in-depth metamorphosis.

Lol my pawn came back from a journey with three different Arisen since the last time we slept and he starts talking about how I definitely missed him and coming on to me

So his amazing otherworldly quests have gone from losing to goblins repeatedly, to being horrified by other Arisen, to a marathon of presumably losing to goblins while Arisen gently caress the world up, and finally deciding "yeah I've got it pretty good"

I had to switch my simple fighter/warrior pawn to calm because he was incredibly useless as simple, and that switch immediately improved him a great deal. If you don't think they're aggressive enough as calm, you really won't like simple. Guy wouldn't even be in fights half the time, instead opting to wander off half a mile to do gently caress knows what.

I’m convinced the “goblins got the better of me” message is bugged or some kind of default message takes priority when the pawn got downed by something they don’t have a line for. my pawn could have soloed a level-appropriate pack of any goblin type for the majority of the game in my world, but in everyone else’s world they apparently just shoved him in a locker over and over

If straightforward is the only way to ensure that swords actually go into dragons, then it sounds like my course is set.

I've never gotten that message, but honestly my warrior could probably solo every goblin in the game world at once and not be down more than a third of his max health. I sometimes get the "a chimera got the better of me" message and I still extremely doubt that, unless the chimera threw him off a cliff.

I wonder if it counts stuff that happens if they are not hired but seen as a wandering pawn? Because 90% of the damage in this game is "Every goblin knows Stinger" letting them get a free shot in 0.1 seconds before they are reduced to paste. Half the pawns I see are almost dead when I round a corner and see them getting their poo poo wrecked even when they have great gear if I don't save them before I then ignore them. Which was extra surreal when backtracking in the Vernsworth area while level 75+ pawns are spawning.

At least when they are being poisoned to death by lizards they have more of an excuse. "They have chosen to walk away from our mage's cure bubble. They clearly wish for death."

I reached Bakbattahl approximately four weeks before I finished the game so it is what you make of it (postgame not done yet). I do enjoy games where the main quest is short but you don't have to do it right away and there's plenty else to do before you do. The first DD was a lot like that too.

I got save-trapped (no wakestone or ferrystone on me, last camping hours back) on a ledge over that canyon running between the Checkpoint Rest Town and the Ancient Battleground. By the time I remembered that I could tackle a pawn, I was at about 30% max health, and by the time I managed it (thanks WolvesHuntIn who sometimes is named Winter) it was more like 20%.

I then immediately ended up somehow in a scripted quest thing with Raghnall. He took off into some woods and for some reason I thought it was time-sensitive, so I headed off to follow him. Made it through the choppers in the forest and found him, but then triggered an event where I was separated from my pawns.

Did I mention that I am running as Trickster right now? Anyway, got through the fight at the end only taking minimal damage, and learned a lot about how to play the vocation I feel. I definitely need to get better at switching to punches, but I chucked dudes all over the place and played keep-away with my clone, and it was a lot of fun.

10/10 game, would use their dangerous save model again.

I sadly think I need to say goodbye to WolvesHuntIn for a little bit because I can't keep up with Warrior aggro yet, and he makes things pretty chaotic especially with bigger enemies I'm trying to aim away from the party.

I've been learning how to mod this game so i can make the oxcart invincible for that cross country round trip tour. Making the cart invincible was relatively easy, the ox less so. For now my script just makes all loaded oxen invincible, including wild ones.

Took the new wheels out for a test drive to see if i could get away with ignoring the driver and it held up beautifully against several small mob ambushes and even a cyclops raging at point blank! But then a griffin landed and destroyed the cart.

I looked into the cart properties again and, well this won't do at all

Griffin attacks like that are relatively rare so I'm gonna go for it anyway but if it happens again I'm going back to disable that :argh:

Also maybe have the car stop during the night, not much to look at when it's gets dark.

But I want the monsters and arrows and spells to swirl around my Arisen, who refuses to stand up or lift a finger as he idly watches everyone else fight. He paid to ride the cart, not to be an auxiliary guard!

As for nighttime, I like the darkness pierced only by occasional torch and lantern light. I'm thinking of checking out some shader mods to play with visuals a bit but my potato computer struggles with the lowest settings as it is so I'm not counting on them.

Maybe in the future if I get a nicer PC I can see what this all looks like with pathtracing enabled
