Just got an email from Telus trying to get me to switch over from Koodo. They are offering 150gb with Canada/US/Mexico roaming for $65/month. The website lists that as $85 but there's a promo code in the email to bring down the price: K2T65CANUSMEX. Not sure if that promo code works for everyone because they also provide a validation code for each line on the account. But worth a try if that's something anybody needs

That seems like a pretty good deal to include mexico. I am going to Korea for a couple weeks in July. I presume I should just buy some local sim once I get there? I really wish public had Wi-Fi calling, that would be awesome from a hotel and all I'd probably need. It's not 5G, but chatr also has some cool new plans. My old plan with them was $40 for 8GB, so going down to $34 and getting a bunch of data seemed cool. I don't think I ever ran out of data on my old plan, but sure why not.

I don't think I asked this before but I'm going to Korea in July for a couple of weeks. I'm not a big user but I think I might want to have some way to be in contact while I'm over there and have a # so I can be called if necessary (elderly parents) other than email. Is it best just to get a PPD Sim once I get there? Airport or something? Or are there some options I should look at getting before I leave?

I've only ever done data only (ie. no phone number) and not in South Korea, but you can get a travel esim beforehand and activate it whenever you need to. I generally communicate with overseas relatives via Whatsapp/Facebook Messenger which will save you the need for the phone # (and the need for your parents to make a long distance call), but may not be an option depending on how tech savvy your folks are. I've purchased the last number of esims via the Airalo app, but you can cross compare prices between different vendors. Most of the Canadian telecom players will charge you an arm and a leg if you decide to use roaming of course.

Yeah just get a travel esim from airalo or ubigi or similar. It's only worth getting a real sim after you get there if you really want the ability to have a local phone number for making calls and such.

Actually, the more I think about it I'll probably just use hotel wifi when I'm travelling. Not sure I'll even get a sim tbh. As long as I can get emails daily, that's probably more than good enough. Hell, I could probably use my IP camera that has voice to try and talk to Mrs. Slidebite. FWIW, Public still has those US/Canada deals but it sounds like they end May 20.

JFC I just had to end-around Bell entirely to get my new iPad added to my existing shareable data line. I've been on the horn with them for two hours trying to talk to someone who can add a tablet to the account, since I didn't buy it from them. The guys at the actual store were apologetic but less than helpful too. Eventually I found that you can just pull open the iOS app, click on "activate a connected device", plug in your IMEI and EID and it'll auto-generate an eSim for you and give you the option of adding it to your shareable account. It shows up as a "laptop" but whatever. gently caress, I can't believe how useless this whole process was.

I REALLY need to start looking for a new carrier. The other day I saw an add for something called fizz mobile and it got me wondering if there's a better deal but everything has changed so much I can't tell who's who. Is there some sort guide that explains who uses what network and how well it works? I tried Wind (I think they are called Freedom now?) back before I switched to Koodo and couldn't get reception in metro Vancouver let alone out in the interior and do not wish to repeat that experience.

Been on Wind/Freedom for ages. I used to lose reception at my local Shoppers and the Path underground mall in Toronto. Also when leaving the city to golf, but I considered that a feature. Freedom was also the only carrier to have reception on the subway for years (until Rogers bought the system/rights a year or two ago). In the last few years, and especially since 5G I've never lost reception. As well it unfortunately has included Canada-wide roaming so I have no excuse to completely disconnect. I never bothered with it in the past, but for a long time they included 1 GB of roaming. Now it's just your full data plan.

Yeah I always get a local esim, but I don't usually know my local number months out when I'm booking hotels and reservations so I need to be reachable at my Canadian number.
