Just two weeks ago, the party said it had suspended him over allegations he’d made Islamophobic comments on Facebook, saying of Muslims that “we really don’t need them here" and "they add nothing.”

You think the Tories would just do that? Ignore racism to stay in power??

Reform won two council seats, half of what the Workers Party got. I'm sure the media coverage will reflect this failure.

I don't know if you recall, but the tories investigated themselves for islamophobia some time ago and found themselves not guilty so there is clearly nothing to see here and we should all just move along. Running the country, delivering for working people etc.

Angepain posted:Projecting a general election on results from whatever set of councils are voting this year seems like a terrible idea. In their own article Sky talk about how different patterns for voting in councils has increased the vote for independents. oh they've also just assumed Scotland and NI will be exactly the same as last time. did somebody just want to fill some column inches You cant use the locals to 100% project the general because a lot of the time people vote based on local issues more than national problems, eg the Tory mayor winning because he promised to setup flights to Malaga from Teeside airport. But they can be used to do a temperature check on the mood of the parties traditional supporters. Turnout was absolutely loving garbage overall, which could mean the Tories just didnt turn up to vote rather than switching to labour etc.

Now look at this projection showing a tidal wave of Independent MPs in the General Election.

I saw the guardian has a good version of that kind of analysis where it makes clear the limitations while pointing out general trends that are still relevant. Most importantly they don't do a to-the-seat projection of the general election on fundamentally incomplete data and hide any caveats in the last paragraph of the article, though that probably cost them a few clicks.

If all you read is stuff about how Khan has presided over a dangerous and decaying city, that sort of result will be a nasty surprise. The Tory London mayor campaign seems to have been a case of clumsily trying to copy culture war nonsense from the USA, where the Republicans do well by playing on rural and suburban fears of out of control, culturally alien cities. Branding London as a hellhole full of welfare-scrounging, unpatriotic ethnic types is quite the strategy, when it's Londoners that you're trying to persuade to vote for you!

Being fair the Tory electoral strategy of palpable disdain for the people of this country has worked out for them well in previous elections, so maybe they really were surprised it doesn't work in metropoles.

That does apparently work on the commuter belt that is outside the catchment area for the mayoral election but still presumably spends time in london.
