I'm not like, making myself insane worrying about avoiding mobile game ads because I think if I just avoid one more ad, the climate is saved. That's absurd. If I cared about that I'd smash my phone with a hammer. I'm still playing games that serve ads, still using my phone and computer. I guess my broader point was just that we spend so much energy on absolutely pointless things. There is never a step where we, as humans, say "is this a worthwhile use of energy." Even if not doing a thing is pointless from the perspective of climate change, that doesn't make it suddenly worth doing the thing.

Its really good to have at least one example of a totally useless waste of energy. Something where you know you have complete understanding of the issue. For me that is billboard trucks they pay to drive in circles around college cawpuses.

When it comes to "biggest wastes of energy" the first one that comes to mind is all those empty planes flying around during covid just to keep their airport spots At least people racing cars and going on cruises are having fun.

Another one that I see a lot (on holiday in tenerife) is huge apartment complexes built with concrete and then abandoned and left to rot because the developer went bankrupt during some property market slump

A new study that looked at nearly 40 million flights in 2019 was able to calculate the greenhouse gas emissions from air travel for nearly every country on the planet. At 911 million tonnes, the total emissions from aviation are 50 per cent higher the 604 million tonnes reported to the United Nations for that year.

At least we can all rest easy knowing that the self reported carbon figures for national emissions per country also weren't found to be undercounting by as much as 25%. Hold on I'm getting a phone call.
