In general, going to comedy clubs we pretty much always go to the late Friday show, as that has the rep of being the most interesting, least polished show where they try the new/weird stuff. In contrast, the early Saturday show is supposed to be the most conservative ‘I know this works’ show. Due to that ‘non refundable’ clause we ended up with tix to both the late Friday and early Saturday show for Adam Conover, and it was interesting seeing how the shows differed, improv startup based on local stuff, then clear winners, new jokes, then solid , and for Conover “one man show” material for the end. MC and feature were more all over the place, with the feature acting like he was bombing (he wasn’t) before dropping into a great bit on the friday show ranking apples (the fruit). Yeah it was this guy: applerankings.com. This was the second time we did both late Friday and early Saturday, the other time was Gilbert, who did completely different insanely aged material each night, which was great. Friday was like 40 minutes of “old Groucho” and I don’t think I've laughed harder in my life. Goddamnit we had tickets for a show he cancelled right as Covid started.Then he died, the jerk.

If we’re doing books by comics I bought Liz Mielle’s Why Cats Are Assholes at one of her shows, and even for a non-cat-lover it was amusing. Ya’ll watching After Midnight? It’s nice to see so many working comics just doing jokes in a loose game show format, although nothing will ever replace Comedy Knockout in my heart. Or Bunk, my first exposure to Michael Che, who at the time my brother was raving about after seeing him at IIRC The Stand. drat that was a long time ago.

I was a huge fan of At Midnight but am just not feeling After Midnight. Though the episode where Adam Pally kept making fun of the name of the show was amazing. I just listened to Norm Macdonald's audiobook in full. I have a problem with audiobooks, I usually feel I miss a lot by listening versus reading. But this one is a masterpiece, as Norm's voice is crucial to the experience. But the best thing about it is how there are really 3 "Norm Macdonalds" involved in the book. One is the real Norm writing it, one is the fake Norm created by the fictional ghost writer, and one is the real fake Norm who the ghost writer sometimes lets write parts of the book on his insistence without changing any of the words. The ghost writer himself is also a great character, a take off of the Charles Kinbote character from Nabokov's Pale Fire. Hilarious stuff.

The monologues are great, that first segment on Los Angeles for outsiders was 100%. The guests are... uneven. I have no idea how Seinfeld was involved with the writing of Seinfeld the TV show.

Not everything worked, but it was refreshing to see them throw poo poo and the wall and see what stuck, just doing things they thought would be funny or interesting. Some of the greatest joys were the local experts brought in to talk about the big L.A. topic of each episode. Most of them were engaging and more interesting to spend time with than the comedians in town for the comedy festival, who didn't contribute much. The big exception was Mulaney's creepy hypnotist friend with the bad wig and thick spray tan, who took himself way too seriously. But Marcia Clark was a charming and fascinating guest who could probably carry her own talk show, and Cassandra Peterson (Elvira herself, at age 72) was delightful and glamorous. It seemed like Sarah Silverman gave her attitude, probably feeling a bit threatened. Everybody's In L.A. also had great musical guests: Warren G doing "Regulate," Beck doing "Loser," and Weezer opening and closing one episode with songs from the Blue Album – all 30 years old this year. The Wang Chung theme song was awesome back when the movie To Live and Die in L.A. first came out in 1985, and I never got tired of it before every episode of this show.

Belated thanks for this info, I find it hilarious that this maniac is also responsible for some of the chillest, funniest stuff around, too. I know Nikki Glaser got a lot of attention for the Tom Brady roast but I have never really been a big roast fan. However, she is consistently hilarious on Comedy Bang Bang or anywhere else I've seen her so I watched her special and loved it. I watched it early morning before work in a dark room which probably enhanced the existential feeling it left me with but it was really funny.

A friend recommended the newest Glaser special, so we put it on and… I dunno, I’ve liked her before so had high hopes but it just felt so pedestrian. She’s obviously a good standup, but if you’re not doing anything to set yourself apart from hundreds of people doing the same kind of routines, it’s just gonna feel like material I feel I’ve heard before now.

When I turned on the Brady roast I was excited to see him there. It wasn’t him, it was Andrew Schultz. Completely different extremely white guy with a stache. He wasn’t bad, especially given the crap level of most of the show, but I was still bummed I wanted Mateo.
