FYI, Cinco de Mayo doesn't commemorate Mexican Independence Day it is actually the day that Americans discovered putting cheddar cheese on ground beef and stuffing them in stale corn shells was something worth celebrating.

At this point I like to think maybe it was their way of equalizing everyone by slowing down the gifted kids, all you have to do is tell them they're already college-level so they never think they have to work hard anymore

It actually means a lot, but in the wrong direction. Gifted kids never have to learn perseverance and self-discipline in k-12 specifically because they're ahead of all the curves, then they get to their first challenge in college or real life (depending on the severity of the giftedness) and completely break down with no idea of what to do.
