Gravitas Shortfall posted:in an ideal world, children would have a customised education that gave harder problems to kids that were good in those disciplines. We have something like this in NL, different secondary education levels based on skill and motivation. It works, to an extent. The main criticism is that once the choice is made around grade 7, it's an enormous hassle to change levels, especially going up the ladder delays your education by several years. And the level you finished at strongly dictates what tertiary education or job you can get. So, if your grades are bad in grade 6 for no reason of your own this can have an effect on the rest of your life.

College is cool because while newfound independence may keep you from your schoolwork and binge drinking can ruin you for morning classes and part-time work can ruin you for evening classes and anxiety about working towards a degree you don't want can kill any enthusiasm and undiagnosed executive dysfunction will give you guilt ulcers, sometimes you can make some lifelong friends ("lifelong" being that period between college and having kids).

Ommin posted:I'm this one. Turns out I have an excellent memory, so k-12 was a cake walk for the most part. I crashed and burned in college. I didn't properly learn how to learn by understanding rather than memorization until my late twenties, early thirties maybe. I was in GT, all the AP and honors classes, and graduated with honors and scholarships; but just a big ol dumb dumb in the end. I was in the fun position where I aced all my tests and consistently scored in the 99th percentile on all the big standardized stuff, because tests are actually really easy if you're good at memorizing stuff and get how to guess the right answers on stuff you're not 100% sure of, but my grades were always in the Cs because it's hard to do homework and all the other stuff when your home life is poo poo. Which meant I got into a community college I couldn't finish because we couldn't afford it anyway. But hey my grades were all As when I was living by myself (briefly) so at least I was able to confirm that I'm not secretly dumb as hell. Wheeee
