A Tink2x pro will be perfectly fine for n64. The 4k is obviously awesome and can do way more than scaling but it's probably overkill.

Oh, Dee, you card. :-*
The TV got too hot, probably because it has not been powered off since purchase, and the adhesive has failed. Your options are to either buy a new one and an extended warranty or have them invest in commercial signage displays, which will be hideously expensive even compared to the Frame and will look awful in a home. I can't even fault your mom for this because the whole selling point of the drat thing is to show off art while not in use.

They could also hound Samsung about it but I think they'll be told to kick rocks because we have no consumer protections in the US. Maybe making a social media stink could help. Who knows?

It’s out of warranty at this point, so Samsung won’t do poo poo regardless. And also the TV was rarely actually in the art mode, instead just running a few different channels 24/7. For reasons that are tl;dr and tmi, my mother spends drat near all her time in the living room routinely falling asleep with the TV on and just going. Went with my dad to get a new TV, but I’m going to enforce automatic power off and poo poo on the new unit, and he got a protection plan in case this happens on the new set.

He did get the LG G3, so the importance of letting the TV power off and do its maintenance cycles is going to stressed to the point of annoyance.

The post was more to explain the likely culprit (that adhesive is nearly transparent when applied in a thin layer, but yellow when it is thicker/pooled) and also emphasize how ridiculous a TV intended to be used to display an image for most of its life managed to crap out in less than 2 years. Shame on Samsung, not su madre.

lol that set is going to be stressed to hell and it's going to develop image retention especially if she watches every old person's favorite news channel.

Why didn't you get like a Sony X93/5L or one of the new Bravias?

Branch Nvidian

Because those don’t flat mount against the wall. It’s incredibly dumb, I agree, but it’s not my TV or my sense of aesthetics that has to be satisfied. I set up the TV to automatically turn off after 4 hours of no input, a daily sleep timer to shut off at midnight, and turned on the feature that’s supposed to dim static screen effects like logos.

They also got a protection plan on the TV, so if/when it has permanent burn-in 8 months from now the TV can be replaced. This is the best I was able to do.

Not sure if there's a better place to ask this but I'm having trouble getting a video to play on my NVidia Shield. It doesn't seem to want to stream from my laptop (I get the 'black screen with Chromecast icon') and I dropped it on a SSD and connected it to the Shield via USB but the VLC app can't see the hard drive. Any ideas?

I currently use a 48-inch 1080P Sony TV as a computer monitor and it's worked great for about ten years. I'm going to be moving to a new place in the next few months, and to celebrate I'm thinking about replacing it with a new disgustingly large TV. I assume 4K is the standard resolution for all new televisions these days, but my computer (with a GTX 1070) most likely can't maintain 60 FPS at 4K on even a particularly well-made game like Doom Eternal, and keeping things set at 1080P would be a complete waste. Do games running at 1440P look like junk on a 75-inch television?

Maybe I should splurge on a disgustingly beefy video card first?

My second generation LG OLED is finally showing small signs of burn in. After thousands of hours of TV and games, leaving it on pause for too long and not really doing anything at all to care for it. On an entirely grey screen you can partially see the Android TV home row from our shield. That’s it so far, I don’t notice it in any other situation. TV is almost 9 years old and still a pleasure to watch stuff on. Zero complaints and we’ll buy another when this eventually dies.

I’m shocked it wasn’t the Zelda hearts or some other game UI stuff. We both gamed a ton during COVID, we were not kind to this poor TV.

Cool post big guy.

Anyone else have any suggestions for Android apps I can run on my Shield to watch this crappy 90s horror movie? Or ideas as to why the apps I've tried aren't recognizing the SSD? I asked over in the Plex Thread also; since my desktop computer is currently down I've got to find some workarounds to accessing new media. Thanks.

I'm pretty deep in the Plex weeds because I pretty much exclusively use my shield TV for watching torrents of stuff from my Plex. Do you know what format the video is in/codec? Also what version of shield and what TV?

Edit: I don't care if it's a torrent or what it is I just love horror movies so if you want to DM me EXACT details feel free lol

Second edit: what format is the SSD?

I was also going to ask about the SSD filesystem. Are you able to see the drive with the shield at all? I know the apps aren't detecting it. You may need to reformat if it is NTFS. You can reformat it with the shield or Windows to exFAT, which will allow you to transfer the video back to the SSD. Android doesn't like NTFS. Obviously back up anything you wanna save before reformatting.

Ah yeah, I had a feeling it was the volume format. The file itself is a plain-jane MP4 video. I think the Shield is version 9.1 or whatever the latest is, it's just the little book-sized unit with an HDMI output and two USB ports (and a loving annoying remote with a stupid Netflix button I don't need). Honestly I'm not sure what format the disk is (it's been so long since I've checked) - I THOUGHT it was some type of FAT volume, because its primary purpose is holding my Rekordbox DJ database (and that's their usual preferred format) but I may have formatted it as APFS way back when I started using it. I'll check that out tonight after work, and use a different drive if I can find a FAT one lying around.

Thanks! :)

Turn off Energy Saving mode. Can’t remember if it’s still enabled by default. Also I think there’s some option like “Don’t collect my data” you have to manually enable.

Semantically, "you" is both singular and plural, though syntactically it is always plural. It always takes a verb form that originally marked the word as plural.

Also, there is no plural when the context is an argument with an individual rather than a group. Somfin shouldn't put words in my mouth.

Jesus gently caress that is the worst. Everything tracked all the time always.

I know it’s not just TVs by any stretch but goddamn if it doesn’t make me appreciate SA for the ancient corner of the internet that it is.

Do not use the service menu to enable those settings unless you want your warranty voided. Beginning with 2022 models, you can turn those settings off without entering the service menu. Only 2021 and earlier require the service menu.

TPC is temporal peak luminance. When you watch a show or movie with a dark scene and then it swaps to a brighter scene, the TV steps the peak luminance up. Disabling it will let it go from a dark to light scene without the step-up. You used to have to open a TV menu and close it to let the TV get back to max brightness.

GSR is global sticky reduction and it is more commonly known as logo dimming. If you watch sports or play games with a relatively static HUD, GSR dims the static areas.

What is the "best" HDMI splitter (however you want to define that)

Going into this 4K TV I have (or want to have)

Nintendo switch
Windows PC
Apple laptop
A white Xbox, probably a series S or something, without the CD drive
A retro handheld console with HDMI out
Maybe a steam deck

It's a midrange 4K Samsung TV pretty new maybe 2 years old

Probably not going to do PlayStation or any newer Xbox , if that matters for compatibility or whatever. I'm not really sure why I have this xbox
