I think the 3DO has the best video quality of the Wing Commander 3 versions?

That requires playing WC3 though.

Yeah Road Rash and Wing Commander 3 were my first thoughts, Road Rash especially might actually be the best version of that game. There's a pretty good port of The Need for Speed as well if I remember right.

The 3DO version is the original actually.

3DO Road Rash and Need for Speed were the originals and the rest were ports from those, but they're not the best versions of the games.

The best version of Need for Speed is unambiguously the Special Edition PC version, it has a ton of extra content and a high resolution mode. Road Rash is more complicated, the Windows version has a high res mode and runs at a flat 60 but with some visual compromises, the sky looks like poo poo and it runs at 256 colours only instead of 16 bit so there's some ugly posterization here and there, but the PS1 version is basically the same as the 3DO version but with a much better framerate. To be honest my pick for both would probably be the PC versions, driving games just feel better at a consistent framerate and while the visuals are a tradeoff, it's not like they're flat out worse.

EA really oughta look at remastering them at some point, 32bit Road Rash is still quite a lot of fun and there's never been a definitive version of it.

Echoing the AD&D games, since they were exclusives (although the second one had a lovely PC port, apparently?), and they're historically important as the last SSI D&D games.

Yeah, I've got Deathkeep, the second game, on PC. Though I have problems getting it to run with DOSbox.

I put in another surugaya order on sunday with some cheap dreamcast and saturn games and two of the japanese TNG box sets for around $35 total and it already got delivered via DHL, I can’t imagine what kind of money they lost there :dogstare:

Yeah I think my first (of two) Surugaya orders is being delivered today, I just ordered it on like Monday or Tuesday.

I've completed ~5 orders since I started in February... changed the city syntax in my address to match DHL in case that was the issue this time, but still no dice :iiam:

Not just you, I wasn't able to checkout with my modest cart last night and got the same error. Now I'll be waiting anxiously to see if my stuff sells out before the next free shipping promotion...stuff I absolutely don't need but still want for some reason.

I got my Wonderswan, game, PCE multitap and a Saturn controller in three separate boxes four days after ordering them. The Wonderswan game came in a box by itself that could've held two full-sized shoeboxes in it. If you're unfamiliar: the cartridge is slightly larger than a GBA cart.

Like, this has to be some sort of bizarro money laundering thing at this point, right?

I’m gonna go out hunting for a nice N64 in Osaka this weekend, anyone got any tips on retro stores that may be less tourist-trappy and so less likely to be getting their price-gouge on like Super Potato

Just get Suruga-Ya to mail one to your hotel. I think I saw a "difficult" one for $40 yesterday.

Hard Off, Hard Off, Hard Off. There's actually several decent retrogame stores in Osaka that are lower profile than the tourist traps, but the Offs are the place to go.

I’m looking for one of the Japan exclusive shells which I will almost certainly end up gutting and refitting with a PAL motherboard unless I lose my loving mind and attempt an ultraPIF mod, so unfortunately the condition is the most important thing for my particular purchase :v:

A local Hard Off in Tokyo had a skeleton orange N64 for 38,000 JPY last weekend when I checked and normal Super Famicom console bundles are going for 10,000 JPY or more now, they’re onto us. ‘Normal’ ones on Rakuten are still below 10,000 JPY, but if the goal was special/limited stuff…

A few months ago I ordered a $100 suruga-ya Final Fantasy XV PS4 Slim in hopes of getting a hackable firmware. When I got it, it wasn't hackable, but as of today it is - firmwares 11.00 and below can be exploited. Worked on the first try and I loaded PT onto it. If you have a PS4 that's been in the cupboard awhile, it might be worth checking.

Osaka DenDen Town has multiple used games stores, I think I bought my PC Engine from around there.

But getting out of town to visit Hard Offs would probably be better.

Yeah I trekked all over den den town looking for other nerd poo poo the last time I was here, but that was like 7 years ago and I wasn’t actively in the retro gaming hobby at the time so I probably overlooked a ton of poo poo I’d be kicking myself for now

We just spent like 8 hours at USJ and I’m fuckin dead so maybe it’ll be a Monday hunt while I spend the weekend never wanting to stand up ever again instead

I’m going to Tokyo for a week before I go home so even if I strike out around Osaka I’ll have another shot, although I expect it to be even tougher to find the spots where they aren’t pricing in the idiot tourist tax
