Never been able to jive with Shiren, I need a character creator to be even a little bit invested. The closest thing I’ve found on Switch to scratching the deep roguelike itch is Tangledeep.

E: seriously though Ultimate ADOM on switch has a ton of on-screen buttons and icons that should be clickable but don’t respond to the touchscreen lol

Nothing you need to know about the first one to play this one. Mage is a fine vocation (allof them are, except for one real poo poo one you unlock later), but keep in mind they are also the healer so you'll be in charge of keeping your group alive (unless you get another mage of course). Feel free to switch at a vocation guild whenever you feel like it, there's no penalty.

* There's no real penalty to neglecting cleaning clothes, except you get a little less money for it, so don't worry too much about them.

* If you're playing a game when the business closes, you can still keep playing to your heart's content. But if you stop, then you won't be able to play it again until the next day.

  • The blue flash indicates an attack can be parried, but the timing on it is misleading. You actually want to watch the enemy attack animation and press the button just as it makes contact instead. The basic enemies where they teach it to you are also particularly bad targets for it, some later enemies telegraph their attacks better and it becomes more worthwhile to do as enemies get tankier.
  • If you're a completionist, there's destroyable flying TVs that count toward your item %, but don't get marked on the map if spotted. Area completion % also seems based on items rather than filling out the map and I've had bugs with map areas resetting then needing to be discovered a second time. I wouldn't go chase filling out every map square unless you really want to and even then it may be best to wait until the final collectathon.

All of the vocations are good to start with, you will want to change your (and your pawn's) vocations as you go, since each one unlocks its own augments, and there are some vocations you don't have available at the start.

Once you purchase a vocation or augment, it's free to change to it at any time, so don't be afraid to just jump between them. The only issue you might hit is making sure you have decent gear for any vocations.

When you find a seeker's token, take a screenshot or mark it down. Minor quest spoilers: There's a quest that makes you pick up an item at the first seeker's token you picked up, and return it to the quest giver within an in-game week.

Yeah, that’s what I’ll have to do - I’m already kind of resigned to not obsessing over failed quests since I got on the wrong ox cart once, stepped off and immediately got a timed quest to find some lost kid that seems to have bugged out on the second or third step…which I couldn’t really investigate further as I had to bail on the town to finish some other timed quests.

Sorry, kiddo, maybe stay away from the fuckin’ wolves next time. This Arisen had their brain stolen by the dragon, not their heart.

That quest is really indirect, you get a few clues then have to investigate and figure it out based on what 2 or 3 people said. I had to look it up myself because I thought a different NPC that got killed by wolves on the way might've been the boy and I didn't want to waste a wakestone.

yeaaaaah I think my issue is I talked to one of the clue givers and figured out where to go and killed a shitload of wolves there, nothing happened, went back to the town and found another clue giver and that updated the quest to point to the area I’d already been…which didn’t have anything left of note, and when I arrived the quest marker disappeared entirely  no idea

Whenever you have trouble finding a quest destination, you can always hire a pawn that knows exactly where to go.
Also don't worry about wake stones. They can be looted from enemies, found all over the place, and you'll even get an item (or buy one) that reveals the location of shards nearby.

Anyway, I was in the mood for a jank euroRPG and started up Elex. I've basically made it to the berzerker town in the start and have done a couple quests, but I'm not really sure what I should be doing, as combat is kicking my rear end, there's no equipment that I can equip, and I don't know what skills I should focus on. Is it worth working towards the social skills, even if I may not be using magic (since they require intelligence)? Any particular equipment or abilities I should keep an eye out for? I likely won't be joining any factions for trophy reasons.

The Lone Badger
Sep 24, 2007

You're really weak at the start in Elex. Small rats can kick your rear end. Try to find missions you can complete without fighting, and find noncombat ways to complete missions.
Drinking lots of Elex will help, it'll increase your Cold though which can restrict your ending options if you don't counteract it.

If you want ezymode combat get a ranged weapon that inflicts stagger, you can easily staggerlock even the toughest enemies. The flamethrower (on fireball mode) is the easiest to obtain.

II was great too though I am scared Piranha Bytes will go out of business and never complete the trilogy :( One of the only game series where I actually get excited at the end by what they are setting up to come next

But yeah Elex is, said confidently by someone who has never played Dark Souls, the Dark Souls of Eurojank CRPGs; once it all finally starts to click and you find a weapon you understand how to use then you can start to handle yourself nicely

-Madame Paquita can clone cards at the castle. When talking to her for the first time she gives a x2 multiplier for green gems when an enemy is killed by magic.
This can go up to x5 after cloning more cards but you have to talk to her directly to get the upgrade, not through her store.

-To unlock the ability to replay ambushes you have to first reunite the 2 soldiers with the dog at the castle, then show the dog the ghost cat after unlocking the ability to summon it. I don't think there's anything in-game which hints at this.

It's just an extremely mediocre 6/10. I probably won't remember anything at all about it in a month's time.

Nothing is too grindy or frustrating though, and it has a built in cheat menu which was nice.

Those 2 things were just unnecessarily obtuse and I would have preferred to know about them earlier in my playthrough.

Starsector page needs an update to two tips:

quote:

The game in it's current state is more or less a sandbox with no end goal outside of what you set yourself towards. Mods can change this of course (and don't be afraid to mod, most of them are fairly solid and the thread can give good advice on which ones to go for, including some that are mostly just QoL mods)

The game in its current state has part of its story. If you don't have a direction towards it after the tutorial (or if you don't do the tutorial), just go to bars on planets and you'll eventually get an event that'll point you in the right direction. There are also some mini stories around again signposted at bar events and at planets.

quote:

The last skill of the blue skill line (Navigation) is one of the best skills in the game (among what are mostly excellent skills) and should be an early priority. +1 burn (+2 sustained) is something no vanilla AI fleet gets so you're going to be faster than any similar fleet. The ability to jump out of a system (at a cost) or jump into one at planets is also very useful.

The first skill of the blue skill line (Navigation) is one of the best skills in the game (among what are mostly excellent skills) and should be an early priority. +1 burn (+1 more sustained) is something no vanilla AI fleet gets so you're going to be faster than any similar fleet. The ability to jump out of a system (at a cost) anywhere or jump into one at planets is also very useful. Don't hesitate to experiment with builds, you can always respec at the cost of a story point. You get the Transverse Jump (jump anywhere) as a permanent addition to your hotbar as part of the story line regardless of whether you have Navigation or not after you complete that mission

New tips:

You should be using sustained burn everywhere, except when you specifically need to maneuver or get somewhere past resistance - in which case either just turn it off or use emergency burn. You should be using the currents in hyperspace to get above 20 burn whenever they're headed in your direction since there are rewards for sustaining high speeds in hyperspace.

If you have colonies at size 4 and above or are using AI cores or other items in industry, other factions will take interest in you. Having a colony or two on hostile planets which won't naturally grow their population can earn you some passive income and provide a free place to store your stuff and resupply (with a Waystation building) outside the core. A volcanic world with at least +2/+2 ore/rare ore is a common world to use. For the core - Penelope's Star and Tia are claimed by factions despite having no colonies in them, which means you shouldn't colonize in them until you're prepared to defend those colonies.

For industries, the more goods you manufacture in your own faction the lower colony maintenance costs are down to 50% off. You only need one industry of any one type to feed all of your colonies if it's making as much of a good as is needed to fill demand (Example: Making 4 goods will fill all 4 good and below demands). Note that industries which are fed their precursors on the same planet cannot be trade-disrupted - Example: Mining -> Refining -> Heavy Industry/Orbital Works.

When you decide to get size 4+ colonies it is advisable to have at least three colonies per star system, and preferable to have five to six. Five to six colonies with High Commands (upgrades Patrol Base -> Military Base -> High Command ) at size 4-5 can defend themselves against most threats without further player intervention, though with most threats you'll need to be hostile towards the faction threatening you before your autospawn system defense fleets will solve the problem themselves. You can resolve all of the colony threats on the intel screen permanently via small story lines.

When deciding on your faction ship doctrine just go with whatever doctrine you like fighting beside in manual combat, whether that is a few high quality ships with good officers or a giant fleet of junkers whether it's composed of phase ships or carriers or normal warships. For combats not involving the player it's been balanced such that it should not matter much what doctrine you choose. Same thing with stations - just use whichever station you want to fight beside in a manual battle. Putting AI cores in stations will increase their autoresolve value and provide them with AI officers in manual combat.

Crow Country

* Enemies stay dead but new enemies and traps appear with progress. It's usually worth at least killing the little blob things, since they only take a single handgun bullet and will trip you up as you try to run from larger, deadlier enemies.
* The camera snaps behind you when you aim. This can be useful for navigation but also means you need to be careful with positioning during fights.
* Use your environment as much as possible to save ammo. Exploding barrels, blue power panels, and traps will deal huge damage and potentially to multiple enemies. There's usually at least one of those in mandatory fights.
* Crates, barrels, and trash can contents change depending on your inventory and can only be broken/searched once. Don't bother with them unless you're short on resources or you'll find yourself hurting later. Bottles are similar but you can see their contents ahead of time. Vending machines will only give you resources you are completely out of, but they can do that multiple times. And remember you can always revisit your car for a free clip of handgun bullets if you're empty.
* There is exactly one door in the game that you open by burning it down. This isn't a mechanic or indicated anywhere else.
* Notes and tips are collected in binders in save rooms, so you don't need to go backtracking to find a specific clue.

not really. it's an easy and simple game. the joy is in discovery and exploration. you don't need any combat stats to easily kill everything in the game (up to where i am, approx 75% of the way through?) so maybe skip those if you like being able to unlock stuff. there's a lot of walking/sprinting in the game so agility is a great stat. no rewards for killing stuff except maybe some faction rep so, again, combat stats are very optional.

maybe the only thing that's worth specifically mentioning is that the map quest(s) are well worth doing and lead to some important mechanics being unlocked. otherwise it's a really straight-forward game.

Playing Mullet Mad Jack after I beat it in order to practice for the tougher stuff. Some tips'n'trix:

* The mode that removes the time limit and gives you a standard health bar neglects to mention that checkpoints do not heal you like they would on all other modes. Enemies will not give you any health upon defeating them, either, unless it's a finisher. You're reliant on the vending machines to keep you alive for the duration of the chapter, so even if everything does reduced damage, do be careful.

* If there is a pit of some kind and an enemy is on the other side, they can be lured into it if they are alerted by you and you back off. This can also be useful if there's a level hazard that you want to knock an enemy into or blow up to take them out.

* When a weapon is upgraded to level 3, they will remain that way on that save file even if you switch to another weapon.

* At times, you'll run into an enemy where one method of dispatching them is preferred. Just remember that you have a kick and nothing is immune to it so you can set that kill up, but you should also watch out putting yourself into the middle of a mob and getting shot to death for it. The melee weapon finishers (which nothing is immune to, either) are also handy to at least buy you a few seconds to think before you start moving again.

* If a room is annoying and you want to leave, just leave! As long as you're making use of the dash and you have some seconds to spare, you can keep moving to kill easier targets. Just don't let yourself get shot in the back.

A couple of extra things for My Time At Sandrock

- :siren: The Research UI has TWO tabs. The second tab has important stuff on it, like your workbench upgrades, and Forging and Tailoring machines. :siren:

- You can keep most things in your chest and still hand them over for commissions and quests. And I think rebuilding Relics. Bait of fishing has to be in your pockets though. as does ammo.
- If you think you have the right items for a commission, and the mission list disagrees they probably want the item at a higher quality, a Refiner can let you use gems and similar materials to raise the quality of items.
- A few perks have the wrong (old?) names for things. Notable the perk for " Mineral Filtrator resources decreased by 1" is actually for the Ore Refinery.
