Oprah was so huge and omnipresent when I became media aware, I never even registered it as a name. She was just Oprah. She had always been Oprah. Harpo backwards, Oprah. Do the younger generations even know who Oprah was? Also the idea of everyone loving up your name so much that you just give in is kind of heartbreaking.

I know I'm in a minority when it comes immigrants who truly dgaf how their name is pronounced or mangled, especially if it's an "ordering takeout" kind of transaction where I've also given a very obviously fake name. Lorenzo St. DuBois has ordered lots of chicken butter masala. But having someone repeatedly and/or willfully mangle your name is a really good indicator of people you shouldn't bother having around. If you say your name is one thing and they go "oh, that's too difficult for me, I'll just call you Bob lol" that's a nice sign you're dealing with a shithead and should just Admittedly, I say that from the position of someone who can choose whether they'll tolerate a shithead for any particular reason. Many people simply don't have that kind of freedom.

An article about Sarah Jessica Parker on an Irish website made me realise that Matthew Broderick never stopped holidaying in Donegal after that big accident.quote:Sex and The City star Parker and Ferris Bueller's Day Off star Broderick have long been committed Hibernophiles and have a holiday home in Donegal. e: for context quote:On August 5, 1987, while driving a rented car outside Tempo, Northern Ireland, Broderick crossed into the wrong lane and collided head-on with another car. The driver, Anna Gallagher, 28, and her mother, Margaret Doherty, 63, were both killed instantly.[37][38] He was vacationing with Jennifer Grey, whom he had begun dating during the filming of Ferris Bueller's Day Off. He suffered a fractured leg and ribs, a concussion, and a collapsed lung. Grey's injuries included severe whiplash, which later required surgery to avoid paralysis.[39][37] Broderick told police he had no recollection of the crash and did not know why he had been in the wrong lane: "What I first remember is waking up in the hospital, with a very strange feeling going on in my leg." He was charged with causing death by dangerous driving and faced up to five years in prison, but was convicted of the lesser charge of careless driving and fined £100 (US$175).[37][40][41][42][43] rollick has a new favorite as of 11:02 on May 11, 2024 |

Hm, I had an idea about what to make of this but it’s kinda complex. Hers can an uplifting story of a black woman truly rising from nothing to achieve massive success, and therefore one of a role model that should be told to kids today. On the other hand, knowing what she hath wrought on American pop and medical culture (docs Phil & Oz), and just the immorality of the existence of billionaires, is enough to be a cautionary tale for these kids. This was meant to be a half joke until I actually put some thought into it, sorry

There are a lot of pop cultural things that a wide age range share because of the long shadow of boomer tastes dominating media that The Kids are now totally unaware of, it's caught me off guard with students a lot e: like for as popular as disney still is, a lot of kids haven't seen any of the older movies. i had an entire class of college freshmen for whom alice in wonderland was a completely new thing, disney version or otherwise Mister Olympus has a new favorite as of 20:11 on May 11, 2024 |

I would think that mistake is less about age and more about whatever was in your pop culture experience; Daryl Hall and Randy Travis are more or less contemporaries so if you’ve heard of one you’re pretty likely to have heard of the other, you just might not know what both look like.
