Just seen the icetimes for Montreals PWHL team from that triple overtime loss last night and looks like they just rolled two lines all game lmao https://x.com/karinehains/status/1789499531345731676?s=46&t=2hVb1vPytx9OUpdE0UPz6Q The Dirty Burger fucked around with this message at 17:13 on May 12, 2024 |

Is the women's team also obsessed with having French Canadians on the roster?

At least it makes sense for the PWHL. Lower salary folks probably still need offseason jobs/start setting themselves up for post hockey career so sticking close to home makes sense for everyone. Also looking at the rosters it looks like the Minnesota is the most home town obsessed. Montreal has 9 Quebecois, Minnesota has 12 Minnesotans. Ottawa has 9 and Toronto 11 Ontarians, but that seems to be more of a matter of supply since Boston has 9 and New York 8.

For a fledgling league trying to get itself established enough to not be in constant jeopardy of folding, every possible marketing advantage should be pursued, and steering players to (roughly) their home-territory teams where practicable seems like a sensible strategy.

Minnesota is higher than that if you count the women who went and played D1 hockey in Minnesota as well. It’s not a bad thing, and it’s fairly easy to build a team with Minnesota connections. There’s about 5.7m people in Minnesota and 8.7m in Quebec, but the popularity of girls and women’s hockey is very different. Girls hockey in Quebec is 7x less popular than in Ontario with about 6700 girls registered in 2020. Minnesota had about 6000 8U girls players in 2020 alone. They had about 13.5k girls registered this last year too. You can’t find a place with more popular girls hockey programs in the world.

Darude - Adam Sandstorm posted:Probably also helps those players not having to move Yeah, works out well for both the players and the teams that players stick close to home. Until the league pays like six figures for depth players where it's actually worthwhile to move across the continent for a job that probably won't last longer than 2-3 years it makes sense to prioritize local talent. It's just super obvious for Montreal because of the names.

Watching this SVK-USA WC game and man, the Americans look rough. Just giving zone entries uncontested and having no man coverage in the slot.

The US always seems to disappoint at the Worlds. Not sure if it's just not having the depth to compete when their A team is playing in the playoffs, guys not giving a gently caress since they'd rather be playing for the cup or a combo of both, but just 5 bronzes this century is rough.

So far my favorite game has been USA vs Sweden. The coach for the USA team is also the coach for the Minnesota Wild and the Swedish team has five Wild players on it rip at getting beat by your own players I also felt a little bad for Matt Boldy on the USA team for having to play not only against his teammates but also one of his linemates. I know this happens but it's funny that it happened with so many people at once

Oh cool thanks for the new information on the tournament I haven't been posting about for an embarrassing amount of time on SA the point is, the US have their best roster in years, and arguably (perhaps not arguably) the best in the tournament, which you might know if you watched the tournament, but it's also captained by Brady Tkachuk and has Seth Jones, Zach Werenski, and Johnny Gaudreau.

I learned this year that although the National Lacrosse League has teams all over Canada and USA, like 75% of its players live in Ontario. They work Mon-Fri then catch a plane to San Diego or Fort Worth or wherever, play a lacrosse game Saturday night, and then fly home. Also, lacrosse friggin rules and if you like hockey you'll like it. Championship series starts this weekend.
