So I watched that Bill Burr and Bill Maher clip where they're arguing about the campus protests and it is amazing to me just how quickly authoritarian fucks jump to saying the most bigoted poo poo the minute anyone engages them. Burr says he's on the side of the protesters and that's all the bait that Maher needs to go on a rant about how he's actually the brave one for saying that students are supporting terrorists.

Opinions of Burr notwithstanding it is impressive how easily he can rile up bigots and have them say the quiet part loud. But even if it wasn't a shitsack like Maher it would be the same as anyone else because they have no stance that isn't propped up by racism or authoritarian fuckery.

Burr overall lands on the correct side of things. Him being loud and willing to use a style of comedy that can walk the line on being sexist or whatever betrays the fact that in the end he basically agrees that homophobia, racism, sexism, etc are all wrong and that old guys like him are stupid for perpetuating them.

Idiots like Maher think Burr is on their side cause he makes fun of some dumb lib kids or whatever but don't expect him to be like "yeah the kids are still right they are just silly and funny"

Once upon a time Nicholas Christakis and his wife got "cancelled" because Yale sent an email telling students not to wear blackface during halloween, and him and his wife sent an email to their students saying "actually, its ok to wear blackface in the name of freedom of speech."

Funny how all these freedom of speech campus guys go "no, not like that" when its not in favor of racist reactionaries.

My favorite part of that saga was when the McGill representative said in court "this is not what education is about," referring to the protests, to which the judge replied: "but maybe it's what democracy is about."

got a good chuckle out of me.

The protests at Australian universities have mostly been low key because university management have been avoiding having the police escalate things (so far). The protesters at the University of Melbourne started occupying a building yesterday

What the students are suggesting “is that we should sell $32 billion of assets out of (the total) $175 billion,” Jagdeep Singh Bachher told the UC regents’ investment committee, which was meeting 125 miles away at UC Merced on the first day of the governing board’s three-day meeting.

its insane that an american university owns $175 billion worth of israeli military assets

Maybe this guy that flies is just sort of passing through, you know?

quote:

Bachher said that divesting in the way students demand would violate UC’s fiduciary responsibilities.

“These assets belong to the entire university,” he said, noting that 350,000 people, including retirees, depend on the investment returns to fund their pensions and health benefits. Any of them could sue the university “because you made a decision that was not in our best interest,” he said.

If you were starting a society from first principles, creating a legal concept not just incentivizing but legally requiring the performance of any technically legal action, no matter how deranged or immoral, as long as it makes the shareholders money... would sound pretty insane.

oh wait that link is dead. here’s what I was able to find:

In a Wednesday statement, California State University Chancellor Mildred Garcia wrote:

“On Tuesday evening, Sonoma State University President Mike Lee sent a campuswide message concerning an agreement with campus protesters. That message was sent without the appropriate approvals.

“The Board’s leadership and I are actively reviewing the matter and will provide additional details in the near future. For now, because of this insubordination and consequences it has brought upon the system, President Lee has been placed on administrative leave.”

I’m actually kind of shocked that CNN is showing that it was a mob of Zionists who attacked, and were allowed to attack, the students in Campus at the UCLA with impunity, tracked them down and Id’d them, and even called out the police asking why if they could do this so easily because of all the video evidence why they didn’t do anything to stop it nor charge the grow rear end men who were attacking students. A year ago they would’ve been going along with “violent pro-Palestine demonstration” propaganda

I wonder if it's a testament to how seriously the campus movement has taken optics that even loving CNN has no choice but to - at least kind of - accurately display what's happening to them, or if there's something else going on. I fully wouldn't be surprised to see a total media blackout like we've seen many times before.

I think it's a testament to how lazy and lovely Israel has been at creating a counter narrative. CNN can't spin things for Israel if they don't give them anything to work with.

They don't. $175B is the amount managed by UC Investments which at a glance includes the $30B endowment and probably most of the rest being retirement funds for employees.

I'm guessing the $32B they'd supposedly have to sell is mostly global mutual funds that own any Israeli assets.

Academics Against Encampment Protests

You might recognize a few names here (lol Avi Loeb). A few I know are particularly disappointing since they're supposedly good mentors and care about their students so you'd think they might oppose having them beaten and arrested.

Ironically one signee is a (largely estranged) family friend who is a vocal FREE SPEECH advocate and has written many condemnations of the silencing of conservative voices on campus.

Yeah, I was in the middle of helping take the encampment apart, and we all started noticing things like "HEY we're on Ha'aretz!" Or "HEY we're on Al Jazeera!"

Then a student, runs over, shuts off the music I had on and was like "HOLD up Mike Lee just emailed us!"

Students are figuring out how to respond to this. My JVP pod is going to do a statement tomorrow.
