Go to your local Democratic headquarters and start getting involved, the Democratic party is about to go through some major shifts and the people there on the ground floor are gonna influence how it changes, and will determine if we get 4 years of Trump or 8.

yes yes yes! i am already on the list to do some poo poo, and it's gonna be awesome. i can't wait until the mid-terms, they are SO IMPORTANT.

if you guys want to do some real immediate good right now, talk to people. just hear them out, and listen to one another, and tell your stories. telling stories is so important in changing your local narrative and doing good. especially if you're going to volunteer in a political campaign or to help the homeless or to work at a needle exchange, etc.--your story is important, and so is the person you're helping that second.

eta: this is my day to day go-to for aclu directed donations. they also need volunteers. you can help immediately. https://www.aclu.org/issues/immigrants-rights

me too, and i am proud of you even if i don't know you for taking those steps. you are doing good just by improving your own life.

changing is hard. my accomplishment today was to go to the doctor. my joints are actually flaring less and i've lost a pound and a half in the week since i've been there. i'm incredibly pleased with that level of progress, because it is well beyond expectation. every step of progress that i make to improve myself gives me motivation to improve the world around me too, so that everyone can benefit from change.

I volunteered at an ASPCA shelter for a few months. that was basically just walking very good doggies and hanging out in a room full of cats for a couple hours a week. very low-stress volunteering

i think everyone feels a lot of control is lost on a national scale, so it's important more than ever you get some perspective now and see how much difference you can make locally

it's okay to check out for a few days if you feel oversaturated, i know i am rn, but never ever let it become permanent. if you're not sure you trust yourself to come out of your funk, then write a thing on your calendar for like a week or a few weeks from now saying "get off your @$$ and volunteer at the immigration help center or join a protest or something"

if you're looking for something that can do some good IMMEDIATELY, contact the Transgender Law Center. people are rushing to change their names, get their passports with correct gender identification, change their other documentation, etc., because a lot of basic human rights finally granted to trans*/LGBTQIA+ people were given by executive order.

help your friends, please. they're people and they just want their basic right to be who they are, and nothing else. http://transgenderlawcenter.org/

in the short term I'm worried about people's mental health. in the long term too, but one has to prioritize I think. donating to crisis hotlines is one good step. talking to people and hearing them out sounds like a really good idea, I'm trying to think of ways to put that into practice beyond friends and family. have to keep my own poo poo under control as well, of course.

there's a website called 7 Cups that offers free one to one peer counseling. i've been counseling there (with my therapist's guidance and approval for my own health) for about a year and it helps, a lot. it allows me to seek peer support, and it allows me to help a lot of people, especially teenagers who are literally unable to control any aspect of this, work through it. it's a good place to start, if you don't have a local place to help and feel compelled to do peer counseling. https://www.7cups.com/

another good resource is any youth shelters in your area--like the SF LGBT Youth Center--they variously offer drop-in counseling, hot meals, resources for homelessness/dealing with parents/guardians in housing crises, clothing services, harm reduction services, medical testing, meds and primary care, and just people to offer help and guidance when things are hard all the way around. this is sf-specific so look up your own local shelters or PM me for help finding one: http://www.sfcenter.org/programs/youth

any place that has a VA you might want to look into too, or community mental health services groups. these groups both operate on federal funding, and both are in the line of fire to lose funding after PP / repro health and education.

ETA: bonus: the Trevor Project needs volunteers and donations, go: http://www.thetrevorproject.org/pages/volunteer

7 Cups is a neat organization. i have OCD and PTSD; i've been in therapy and on good meds for it for over a decade now. my therapist has given me not advice exactly for helping with 7 Cups, but coping skills for handling other peoples' trauma without triggering episodes, and active listening skills that i didn't have before. it's been really helpful for me, as well, to peer counsel in that as the peer is receiving the benefit of being listened to and validated, i'm receiving validation in knowing that i'm not alone. my therapist has helped me process a lot of the feelings that come up and memories that surface with counseling, as well. it's really helped me grow as a patient and an activist to hear other peoples' experiences, too.

It honestly isn't where you should direct your efforts. Focus on helping individuals. A lot of people are going to lose their jobs, their health care, and their housing. Figure out ways to help them.

People are going to have to be ready to provide for their friends and family and communities. If you have friends you know will need extra help - because they might lose their health care or their jobs or whatever - be prepared to help them. If not financially, then by doing things for them that they might otherwise have to spend money on. Be there to support each other. Rally around the people you care about. Let them know that they aren't alone, no matter what the presidential rhetoric is. Be ready to protest, to stand up for what matters where you live. Stand by the people that matter to you. It's really easy to give up, but you aren't powerless. There are a lot of small things you can do make life better for yourself and the people close to you. Surround yourself with excellent people, and love, and happiness, and you'll weather this.
