Is there any reason not to buy the Persona 4 game that is on sale for PS3? I don't have a Vita to play the Golden version and seem to recall this version being the better one according to these forums. I'm probably wrong in stating that because I don't know much about these games except for the praise they get on these forums. Somebody tell me I'm dumb and why I need to buy it please. My only experience with this series was with what I think is the first Shin Megami Tensei, but that was in the 90s and I hardly recall it.

If it's regular Persona 4, it's a great game and you won't regret playing it. I've never played Golden but I wasn't really dissatisfied with the game outside of a couple things that I doubt are changed in Golden.

Golden's weird because it kind of already expects you to have played though Persona 4 already but not in any way to where I wouldn't call it the definite version but if you think you'd enjoy Persona 4 , getting the PS2 version isn't that bad at all. Playing Persona 3 PSP without playing Persona FES is a unfortunate sin though

Absolutely get it, unless you hate RPGs. Golden is mainly better because it runs at a higher resolution on a smaller screen. The PS3 version on PSN is more than adequate.

Yeah Persona 4 is an extremely slow starting game. It's not even a really extended tutorial, just a lot of story happens before you really get access to dungeons

rabidsquid posted:Yeah Persona 4 is an extremely slow starting game. It's not even a really extended tutorial, just a lot of story happens before you really get access to dungeons I think part of the problem is also that you're seeing a lot of heavy stuff about characters you haven't grown attached to. I know I for one was way more into what I was seeing about Kanji and Naoto than I was about Yusuke and Chie because the latter happened so early that it didn't carry so much dramatic weight for me. The social links for those characters had more impact because I saw the end of those much later in the game. Compare this with Persona 3 where the opening of the game isn't about character so much as it is about the mechanics of the world you've been placed into and the protagonist himself. That's a much more riveting way to get the player invested because they haven't started to care about the cast just yet. While Persona 4's focus on character stuff was ultimately really satisfying for me, I definitely agree that its opening was a misstep. For the guy who bought it, just know that you'll appreciate what you see in the opening later on in the game looking back. It's throwing a lot of character stuff at you that you'll retroactively find more interesting.

I bought danganronpa games a while back based on recommendations from one of these threads. The first game is decent, but the second game just sucks. I can't get into it. It seems like a lovely/creepy fanfic.

Persona 3 and 4 are two of the few games that I forgive for erring on the side of being very long due to their format. The mundanity of living in your character's shoes plays a big role in how you feel about the experience at the end, and the pace that accompanies something like this is communicated to the player fairly well at the beginning. I don't know that the ending of Persona 3 would have been as impactful if I hadn't spent so many days doing mundane stuff like folding origami cranes or studying in the library with my friends. "Twice as good if it were half the length" is a phrase I use all the time with stuff like Twilight Princess, where the adventure you're on definitely isn't supposed to feel mundane. I do think the length would be unforgivable if stuff like that were not as important to what the game was trying to say, though. And I also think that being ~70-80 hours rather than 103-4 hours each (my totals on 3 and 4 respectively) would be preferable, as there's probably diminishing returns after a certain point. Of course, the length of this stuff necessarily means that the "new" Persona games aren't for anyone; they're not about "adventure" in the same way that Final Fantasy or Zelda are about.
