It's kind of embarrassing how many of my old web comic list fit this description. Sometimes I think it was really just the novelty* that made so many of us be so forgiving at first. Critical re-reads of some of my bookmarks, even the defunct/ended ones, make me wonder what the gently caress I was smoking.

It is time. Time for the match up of the century. Yeti, it is time for you to finally...1v1 me. Maybe if you're lucky, you'll gain the title of 'Kingslayer'.

lol nah

'See Library' is that function I mentioned a LONG while ago. We can see our friend's Library and add whatever BattleChips as 'credit' to our own. So, if I don't have Chip #170 and my friend does, it will show up as green text on the Library screen. The game will also count that as actually having the chip! Meaning, if I start a New Game, and I use See Library with someone who collected all the BattleChips, the game thinks that my New Game file will have all the BattleChips in the game and award me the Blue, Orange and Purple star.

Which is pretty nifty, actually. It's one way to get around having to collect everything yourself, I suppose.

Starting from Battle Network 3 and onward, it was possible to trade NaviCust programs. So that was one way of obtaining Style-only programs without grinding over and over! This is also the only way to obtain more Reg+5 parts.

Y'know, if you give a drat about Reg+5 when you can already set FullCust or QuickGauge normally.

NetBattling was pretty diverse in this game, with multiple levels offering multiple types of field. Tri-Battle is of course Best 2 out of 3.

Oh god Blink Animation. How did this happen?

Anyway, 'Tournament' is essentially King of the Hill. You link up and keep fighting until you either lose or complete 69 fights. Then if you lose, that next person becomes King of the Hill, and so on. Naturally, we aren't going to be covering that as I don't exactly have any friends! :eng99:

...Why 69 fights? It seems... a little random.

Oh and yeah you have no friends.

Something, something, Rockman in Japan sounds like "rokku" which sounds how they say 6 and 9.

HI YETI!

Libel and slander. I've taken no part in this tomfoolery.

When you're waiting for the other player to finish selecting chips, the word "Customizing" appears on the top right part of the screen. I don't know why Yeti is taking so long to choose his chips. I'm the one with 120 Base HP.

PlantMan/FlashMan are completely BROKEN. If you run into anyone building a whole folder around these NaviChips, then you auto-lose because you will just get stunlocked to death. And yes, PlantMan automatically destroys all enemy obstacles. Essentially, matches in Battle Network 1-3 PvP revolve around "mash A faster." Since I can mash faster than Yeti, my move goes off first before Yeti's defenses.

Yeti pls ur 2 slow

giver gotta cheat 2 win

Battle Network 3 may seem balanced at times, but it's actually pretty easy to cheap the other player out with little-to-no counterplay. That means you really got-

gently caress off.

Since we're just emulating, and since this game came out before Wireless Receivers became a thing for the GBA, naturally the infrastructure isn't available to support this system. So what you end up with is lag, lag, lag, disconnect. At first, I was planning to show a bunch of competitive matches with the "wizard hax" I'm doing to show you guys PvP, but because of the problems, I can only really show a few parts of it. And naturally poo poo on Yeti whenever I can.

I will turn this LP around, see if I don't!

One thing you need to realize is that there is a hidden GigaChip only obtainable in PvP! In order to get it, we must be fighting on a "Real" setting which causes our friend to lose a chip. Rank DOES affect the rarity of the chip to some degree. This is the main reason why I'm rocking 120 HP. Here is how the PvP Busting Formula works.

Delete Time:

0.00 ~ 30.00: 10 points
30.01 ~ 45.00: 8 points
45.01 ~ 1.00.00: 6 points
1.00.01+: 4 points

Remaining HP
100%: 3 points
75% to 99%: 2 points
50% to 74%: 1 point
40% to 1% 0

Recovery Use
3 or more: -4 points
2: -2 points
1: -1 point
0: 0

HP Difference
This is just the game calculating the difference between the two player's HP and adding or deducting based on the criteria

400+: -4 points
200 ~ 399: -2 points
100 ~ 190: -1 points
0 ~ 99: 0
100 ~ 190 less: +1 points
200 ~ 390 less: +2 points
400+ less: +4 points.

So yes, going HP this low has a point. I overshot it, but oh well. :iamafag:

An example. Now, this means Yeti just his precious FlamMan V3! You better hope your friend isn't a jerk and trades it back! I don't know why Yeti is complaining, I'm the one with 10 million loving chips and needs it.

Why yes I did just my precious FlamMan V3.

Also you're a thieving poo poo

In this GIF, you can kinda see the latency issues I'm talkng about. I had to, uh, do very annoying things to even SHOW this update. This was artificially sped-up...by a lot.

Heavyweight has the more interesting setups, so let's jump here.

FLAGS!

We first saw these in the PlantManOmega and FlamMan Omega double fight! When the flag dies, the fight is over, so protect your flag and kill your opponent's! It's worth noting that the flag does not have i-frames, so beware the chip combos!

So every frame that an attack is in its hitbox, the flag takes damage. This, naturally, means that the HP can drop like a stone with certain attacks.

Yeti, you puss. Get out of the way and let me hit your flag.

You're just giving me more and more reasons not to move. Also gently caress you.

Annnnd I drew BeastMan. Sorry Yeti! I wish I could go back in time, and use BeastMan's command during Japanese tournaments. And then get kicked out for accusations of cheating.

I wish I could go back in time and punch you in the face or something.

Starting a new match...

AH poo poo

NOOOOOO THE RESTOCK.

Restock: For every turn throughout the match, the game will automatically spawn Guardian obstacles. These function just like the real Guardian statues, but in addition, the game can put more than 3 Guardian statues per side of the field. Your field will get clogged and no one will be able to move. Ever. You'll be forced to hit a statue at some point. Heavyweight only.

While I hate the fucker with a passion, BubbleMan can come in handy. Once.

Maybe.

Oh, you had BubbleMan? PFFFT.

 I told you this update was very hard to make.

I'm pretty sure it would have been easier if you typed with both hands

Last match for the day.

Well, the fucker's already in position to get absolutely wrecked by BeastMan, so I just gotta mash A as soon as it starts and -

Motherfucker what is this bullshit

And here we have the final obstacle: infinite Wind/Fan effects. The entire match will consist of the player getting moved around by these effects. Due to latency, Yeti's input was delayed, allowing the wind to push me forward and avoid most of the hits. :haw:

loving LATENCY

But you know what? Making a few matches took a long time and I never did show obtaining the GigaChip!

So let's just say I did. DeltaRay on Blue and Balance on White are your rewards, should you get lucky enough to obtain it in a match. Both players must be in a "Real" match, have obtained the Blue star (acquire all Standards) be on at least Midweight difficulty, and you will have a 1/32 shot of getting the chip. That's a 3.13% chance of getting the GigaChip. No. Suck my dick, game.

You've been doing that enough yourself, no need for the game to do it

Anyway, we've already seen Balance in action, thanks to Giver's little prank when he first took over. It's pretty self-explanatory - both players lose half of their own health, rounded towards whatever direction the game feels like in that nanosecond (it's down. It's always down.)

Balance you've seen in previous updates, so here's DeltaRay. You press A 2 additional times to get 2 additional slashes. In this game specifically, you will have to time A exactly when the slash happens to get to the next press. 660 possible damage. The below grid outlines how many hits you can make with it.

[0][0][0]//[0][0][0]
[0][3][3]//[3][3][1]
[0][2][2]//[2][2][1]

Eh. You aren't required to obtain these GigaChips for 100% completion...in the English version.

Oh right, we never really saw these. Well, we can fix that!

Rush activates when your opponent uses Invis, Shadow, or Mole. The chip is canceled and you are paralyzed for a short duration. Activates once per match.

If your opponent tries to use a Mega or GigaChip, Beat comes in and takes your chip away. Now no-one gets to use it. Activates once per match.

The game equivalent of 'I'm taking the ball and going home.

When you get down to low HP, Tango the monkey cat swoops down and heals you for 30% of your HP, and gives you a free Barrier100. Activates once per match.

The lovely thing about these? You can only have one of these 3 equipped in your NaviCust. I don't mean one of each type, I mean one of these three. This is thankfully rectified in the later games.

Of them all, Beat is probably the least useful. Giver already showed us how to handle timestop chips, remember the half-damage mechanic?

Battle Network 3 PvP, everyone. :v:

It's time to d-d-d-d-
get murdered

Overview: The Count (Hakushaku as I refer to him in the video) is probably the most challenging Battle Network 6 boss aside from Bass. He is still largely a pushover. His biggest asset is the speed that his attacks hit your panels, particularly the electric one. With 2,000 HP and no weaknesses, he's statistically tied for being the hardest to 10-second rank with Colonel. Fortunately, his AI is as predictable as all the rest.

AI:

Assuming you don't interrupt him, Hakushaku will always start the match by going into the back column, and shoot 5 Meteors at your field. 3 will cover a column, and the other 2 will cover 2/3rds of a column.

His next follow up will be a '+' shape electric move that he only pulls if you're 2 squares or less away from him. If this cannot happen, he'll shoot several volleys of Meteors from the back column once again.

That's it.

If you let the fight go on too long, you'll see spikes shoot up from the panels in your field, but by then you've already failed your S-rank.

Learn The Frames

Watch the hands. When they shoot forward, that's your opportunity to score a counter. Again, this is literally Step Numero Uno in his AI: go to back, fire Meteors. It's consistent. Abuse it.

This is Step Numero Dos. The timing on this is much tighter, but still, hands forward = free counter.

Top Tier

: All of his attacks are elemental. Freebie!

: He heads to the back column for his very first move. All you need to know.

: TankCannon? Explodes on back column? SpankCannon.

: Stand in the middle column annnnnd free counter.

Average-High Tier

: None of his attacks hit his own area, so he's helpless.

: When are these ever a bad idea?

: He loves the back, and these power up with greater distances.

: Good if you're trying to catch him with the electric move.

Suck Tier

: Most of his attacks are fire, so you'll need to be careful with this.

: You don't want to be making holes in your area for this boss. His attacks are auto aim.

: That naturally voids this, too.

: Avoids the bottom tier because he only has one electric move.

Twilight Tier

: Don't do this to yourself.

: Learn to critically analyze an attack pattern. He puts distance between you and him all the time.

: No, these don't do extra damage.

: Not the best choice for countering, really.

In a world where two versions of this game were released overseas in a strange land called Japan...

: What? No MissEchelon art? This is bullshit.

: Wow, their title screen is much better.

In a world where the savefiles for the English versions load properly in the Japanese version.

In a world where...gently caress it.

: What!? I can't understand you!

So why are we looking at this? For the sake of completion, I suppose I should show the small differences between the English and the Japanese versions. :v:

I can actually read the former! :pseudo:

In the Japanese version, we get a nice little animation before going into the NaviCust menu!

And here's our jack-in animation. Why were these dummied out in the American version. Take a look:

Free Space (out of 8 MiB for GBA)
Battle Network 3: 1,084 bytes (ouch)
EXE3 (JP)(Black): 724 bytes

The English language simply takes up more space than the Japanese text. So, small things had to get cut from the English version in order for everything to fit on the cartridge. This is the price you pay for lengthy games, people.

While the jack-in animation would have been neat (though they did come back for the rest of the series!) I'm glad they got rid of the NaviCust animation. Imagine having to watch that every time you needed to futz with Press.

And here is the 100% completion screen. You only got this if you managed to get all 7 stars, kill Alpha Omega and have all 20 GigaChips on top of that.

Speaking of GigaChips, getting BassGS from an event will override the Library slot that contains Bass or Bass+.

Now let's move onto fun stuff. These games had a development cycle of under half a year! So naturally, it was eternally crunch time in the low-budget MegaMan dev rooms. You can expect a few bugs, and some questionable design choices here and there.

This screen just indicates that I have equipped 7 Reg+5 NCP parts. With the max total of 50, and these 7, that makes my Regular Memory 85.

Most of those chips that exceeded the max total of 50 can now be equipped! Of course, my setup is completely bugged in order to do this.

Now, pay attention. You see the chip that's Regular'd? That's BeastMan V5, coming at only 84 MB. Now...watch this.

We are going to unequip all of our Reg+ parts, meaning we should go back down to 50, right? Naturally.

Nothing to report here. Just that the game auto-removes your registered Regular chip now that you don't have the requisite MB. But if we check the second folder...

...we can see that they forgot to account for that.

Pretty clever. They probably either A) didn't bother checking the others or B) hard-coded only the first folder.

And with our NaviCust free, we can equip all the Custom+ parts in the world! DEATH TO EVERYTHING. BEASTMAN FOR PRESIDENT. Man, what an exploit.

OK, so I switched back to the English version, because while I found another glitch in there, this one can be repeated in Blue and White. And it's much easier to explain in English.

Can anyone in the class explained to me what happened? :v:

If you don't see it right away, take a good look at the chip selection slots. The chip we chose was VarSwrd.

First, let's see what we got. We are clearly running the 11th Chip Glitch (technically, 12th, but details).

Now, let's view our folder. Fairly normal stuff, right?

Pfft VarSwrd

OK, there's our GutsPunch! Let's select it.

ignore the chip icon at the top pls You can see that our chip cursor disappeared! That means we're looking at our 11th chip: in this case, Rook Q. Now we enter the field like normal and...

WAIT WHAT :psyboom:

MY BATTLECHIP MORPHED. WHAT IS HAPPENING AAAAAAAAA

Well this is much better. It wouldn't have done anything useful as a Rook

Let's back this up. Take a very close look at the first, second, and third chip slot in my folder. The fact that GutsPunch is preset is irrelevant to this glitch. GutsPunch transformed into BeastMan V5! The first slot of the chip folder became the 3rd slot.

Now, how does the 11th glitch factor into this? Well, if the 11th chip you're choosing in the Custom Screen cannot be selected with the very first chip in your folder, this causes the first chip slot in your folder to become the 3rd slot in your folder!

In this case, because Rook Q cannot normally be selected GutsPunch (1st slot in our folder), the game then morphs GutsPunch into BeastMan V5 (3rd slot in our folder).

Why :psyduck:

Time to call my buddy Prof! Skip this if you don't care

it's code stuff so yeah.

'Prof. 9 Super Technical Explanation" posted:

So the game has an array of 5 bytes where it stores which chips are in the chip selection, yeah? Each chip is 1 byte. In this array, it doesn't store the value of the chip directly, but it stores the index in the chip folder. So, for example, if you select the chip that comes first in your folder, it stores 0x00.

Now then, this array is preceded directly by a 10-byte array that stores the chip selection states of your custom screen -- one byte for each chip in custom screen. Because Giver is running custom+7, he has a custom screen size of 12 chips, this array overflows. So it tries to set the 'disabled' flag in the first and second chips in your original 5-chip selection.

Therefore, by chance, it sets the second bit in the byte corresponding to GutsPunch (the first chip in the folder), which causes it to become 0x02, which is the 3rd chip in the folder, in this case, BeastMan V5.

This will only happen if the first chip in the folder is selected, because it checks if chip selection state is already non-zero and skips it in that case.

So, to put it simply:

-If the first chip in the folder is in chip selection slot 1(the queue on the right where you saw the icon, guys), it will morph in the third chip in the folder if it cannot be selected together with the 11th chip in the custom screen.

-If the first chip in the folder is in chip selection slot 2, it will morph into the third chip in the folder if it cannot be selected together with the 12th chip in the custom screen

-If the first chip in the folder is in chip selection slot 3, it will morph into the third chip in the folder if it cannot be selected together with the 13th chip in the custom screen

No morphing is possible beyond slot 3 because you can only raise Custom+ to +8 max.

This is a really good look into why checking your array boundaries is important, kids! It's also the reason that a lot of the newer languages check for ArrayOutOfBounds exceptions.

So, following this glitch, we can now make even more impossible setups!

BeastMan V5 (morphed)
Navi+40 (11th Chip Glitch)
Navi+40 (12th Chip Glitch)
BeastMan V5 (legitimate)

Play around with this guys. Oh and someone should come up with a name. All I can come up with is the Chip Morphing Glitch. It's sort of like the younger, slower brother of the 11th Glitch, but you can do niche things with it. :v:

Inb4 I'm asked to do a Glitch LP of BN4.

MegaMan Battle Network 2

BronzeFist

Hold A and press Down, Down-right, Right for a Shooting Fist.

SilverFist

Code!

Hold A and press Right, Up, Left, Down, Right for a Shooting Fist in each row.

GoldFist

Code!

Hold A and press B, Down, Down-right, Right, B for 3 Shooting Fist in all rows.

Less useful than you'd think because of the i-frames

VarSword

Code!

Hold A and press for:

Long Sword --- Down, Down-right, Right
Wide Sword --- Up, Right, Down
Fighter Sword - Left, Down-left, Down, Down-right, Right
Life Sword --- Down, Left, Up, Right, Down
Sonic Boom --- Left, B, Right, B

Not a command code, but I wanted to point out that KnightMan hits twice on the square directly behind you.

It's the little touches that make me love these games. Except 4. 4 is the badtouch.

MegaMan Battle Network 3

Dimming

Code!

During a chip dimming, press Left at the moment you receive to damage to halve it.

Paralysis Duration Reduction

Code!

In Battle Network 3-6, if you press any buttons while paralyzed, you will shorten the time you are paralyzed by 1 frame. The game will let you input up to 30 buttons before it maxes out. BN games runs at 60 FPS, so you can shorten the time you are paralyzed by a half-second.

You thought it was a placebo effect but nope! It's real.

GutsPunch

Hold A and press Down, Down-right, Right for a Rocket Guts Punch. Breaking property is added.

GutsStraight

Wide Sword --- Up, Right, Down
Fighter Sword - Left, Down-left, Down, Down-right, Right
Life Sword --- Down, Left, Up, Right, Down
Sonic Boom --- Left, B, Right, B
Elemental Sonic Boom (MMBN3 Only) --- B, B, Left, Down, Up

BeastMan

Code!

While BeastMan's claw or head is over a panel, alternate between the A and B button to boost its damage once per press. So, if I alternate A and B over a panel that the first claw is attacking, it will deal damage (40), then a second time for my first press of the A button (40), then a third time for my press of the B button (40). If I am super fast, I can keep this up indefinitely. However, being that the attack does not last forever, the maximum amount of hits that BeastMan can hit the opponent is a staggering...14 times.

BeastMan: 40 x14 hits = 560
BeastManV2: 50 x14 hits = 700
BeastMan V3: 60 x14 hits = 840
BeastMan V4: 70 x14 hits = 980
BeastMan V5: 80 x14 hits = 1,120

DesertMan

Code!

After the hands appear, press Down + Right + A or Up + Right + A simultaneously to change one of the Lion Heads' direction.

FlameMan

Code!

1) Hold Up or Down on the D-pad to control the trajectory of the Flame Tower as it moves.

2) Hold down B and press Up, Right, or Down to spread the Flame Tower in the two columns after the first one.

Press Up to spread Flame Tower to the rows above FlameMan.

Press Right to spread Flame Tower in the row that FlameMan is in.

Press Down to spread Flame Tower to the rows below FlameMan.

Pressing Up, Right, or Down once creates one Flame Tower and pressing twice creates two Flame Towers in that row, but pressing the same direction twice consecutively is not registered. For an easy full spread, simply hold B and rotate the D-pad.

MetalMan

Code!

Before MetalMan attacks with Metal Fist, hold A and use the D-pad to move the target panel.

JapanMan

Code!

While JapanMan is doing his Thousand Spear, quickly press A and B alternating, starting with A. Consecutive same button presses are not registered.

After the initial 3 slashes, JapanMan will do 1 extra slash if 6 or 7 buttons were pressed, or 2 extra slashes if 8 or more buttons were pressed. Then, if 3 or more buttons were pressed during the extra slashes, JapanMan will tack on 1 extra hit before the final extending spear attack, for a maximum of 7 total hits.

Punk

Punk Chain -- Hold your Charge Shot and position yourself on the middle of your back-most column, then use the chip.

MetalMan

Code!

Before MetalMan attacks with Metal Fist, hold A and use the D-pad to move the target panel.

WoodMan

Code!

Press A + B + Down for an extra set of Wood Towers. Spam the buttons.

ShadeMan

Code!

Before ShadeMan attacks, press to have Noise Crush to:

Paralyze --- Down, Down-right, Right + A
Confuse - Down, Down-left, Left + A

The color of the noise wave indicates the effect. Green is for confusion. Pink is for paralysis.

LaserMan DS/SP

Code!

Hold A and press a direction for Power Down Laser to:

Reduce opponent Buster Stats to 1 --- Up
Remove opponent Navi Customizer Programs (not Buster or Custom+s) --- Down
Remove a chip slot in opponent Custom Window --- Left
Defaults opponent's buster & Charge Shot --- Right

Notice the color change of the laser in the GIF. Activating one of the four command codes changes the color of LaserMan's attack. Yellow reduces opponent's buster stats to 1. Dark blue removes Navicust programs. Red gives you Custom-1 and Green removes your Modular card's charge shot.

Y'know, that thing nobody uses.

LaserMan is probably the only thing in BN4 that gets better the more you look into it.

And that's it. That's the last thing. Just gonna fix a few inconsistencies in some of the past posts, and we'll be good to go. Oh and update the OP. Oh, AND finish the Chip Encyclopedia.

About time. :suicide:

Why thankyew!

I'm pretty sure one of the things I made Epee Em agree to when we started this LP was YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE HUMOUR PROGRAM

finally things have come full circle

So now that the LP is over, where did you actually find this stuff? Data mining, hacker friends, personal experimentation...?

The humor program is a gift that should be cherished and reviled by all.

Chrysanthemums are flowers. Hence chrysanthemummies.

Also, the point of "vent" in the Goethe joke is that it's supposed to clue you in that the sentence is to be read in a terrible German accent, because that's the only way that joke works. God damnit, writers, don't put jokes depending on particular pronunciations in a game that doesn't have voice acting. It's just awkward.

Still, personally, I like the Humor program. Terrible jokes are the best jokes sometimes. "No pun in ten did" is the champion amongst them.

Screenshots? Undernet Area 3 is pretty rage-inducing to navigate since it's all Invisible paths.

Anything beyond general rules like chip frequency and such, you'll have to go to TREZ and ask. That's assuming you want something along the lines of specific code.

All 3, plus getting lucky at times, like with the chip morphing glitch. I actually don't data mine, so when I find something interesting, I call in a few heavy hitters. :ssh:

Oh, I get it. I don't get why Lan is laughing at it considering he dislikes other jokes of that caliber. :downs:

Yep. Puns (when executed correctly) are amusing.

These are not executed correctly.

It's the Final Countdown.
It's kind of tragic to see that GBA emulation hasn't reached the point where multiplayer is a viable option yet, but at the same time, PVP looks a lot less fun with the fact that you can stunlock your opponent into oblivion.

Still better than BN2's PVP, where it's "press A to win with Gater".

At least Chrono X will have online multiplayer.
It will PROBABLY be more balanced than the actual games.
Given they don't give you access to Lifesword in the demos.
