This week all the taxi drivers in Luoyang bought a new smartphone and now use that stupid taxi app (which isn't meant for real taxis, they're doing off-fare rides to cheat their bosses) and there's a lot of frustration going around because lots of taxis are driving around with the light on but not stopping for anyone.

Hi Hong Kong goons, I'll be in HK from the 18th to 23rd for the Cards and Payments Expo. I have free time pretty much all day on the 21, 22, and 23. Anyone want to meet up during this time? Caberhelm keeps talking about good steak sandwiches and such. Also, our company has us in South Pacific Hotel in Central. I'm staying one extra night at my own cost, any recommendations for a good hotel that wouldn't be too difficult to get to and also has good connectivity to the airport? Hey, as you may well know Glorious Iceland signed a free trade agreement with your insignificant little country some time back. (I mean China here, not the US) I was wondering if it was worth it getting a taobao account or something equivalent to that, to have some stuff sent on over in case of wanting to give my least favourite cousins lead flavoured toys, my fashion conscious aunts knock-off clothing or something like that. Maybe some booze, because I'm curious if I can get it through customs as industrial solvent. So who delivers halfway around the world and isn't absolutely terrible?

I accepted one and started the whole paperwork process which took about 2 weeks. As the start of the term came closer, I started to get more desperate emails from other universities even though I had told them I took a job elsewhere. I still get random emails asking to fill positions. Four years later.

The pay flexibility is nil for new starts. You'd get what we offer. Sorry. Domestic teaching staff in China are paid using monies provided from the provincial MoE as part of a monthly disbursement. Foreign staff are paid directly by the institution and (annoyingly) at HUUC we don't do this from a devolved budget (money held at departmental level) but from central funds. Which means that every time we want to hire a new person, give someone a pay rise, or provide a bonus, we have to go through the Asst. Principal for HR. It is a pain in the arse. More established universities with longer running foreign programs may have more money swilling around at FAO departmental level, which can be applied with a greater degree of discretion. [edit] And just for lurkers: on the offerred salary range you could look to save about $500/month after living expenses. There are good hagwons. One of my friend works at one that sounds superb, he was consulting me yesterday on designing a new course he's going to do on Roman history. With like ten year olds, they're that fluent. Almost every class there uses regular American school textbooks. Of course, since that's a really good job no one ever leaves so no openings. How do you work for a fake department? That seems like high level fakery even for China.

The fake department was really a company that paid the school for office space, classroom time, and use of the school name and logo. Their purpose was to fleece rich people and send their kids to lovely college abroad. Editedit: Speaking of private "education", does anyone know about the private colleges popping up around China? My university worked with a famous rich guy who's name I forget. He paid to use their name and opened a college in Nanchong, Sichuan. So instead of the mundane sounding Hope College 希望学院， students could brag about going to Southwest Jiaotong University Hope College. If I got the story straight, this guy was a gangster who was arrested and after his time in jail decided to open schools. And now he's super rich. State sector institutions are missing a trick not getting in on this and doing it better - but they have issues with offering courses at different levels because the provincial MoEs don't like the marketplace to get muddied and would rather have a fly by night set up a business inside a college (I don't loving know). In addition to these, there's a whole mess of agreements with all kind of random private universities and hillariously marketed programs which are nothing more than bullshit followed by a regular application to a university.
