So as a non-enduro guy, what brand (and maybe specific model?) is viewed to be the most trouble free right out of the box?

A DRZ400 is a rather reliable bike. Not sure what the state of their bikes were before they left, but that could make a difference. My theory would be that they had an issue at some point that got fixed poorly (esp the electrical junk), and has contributed to future gently caress ups - at least some of them. I think given what they have been doing, a larger 650CC Honda/Suzuki/Etc would have been a better tool for the job. They can haul around the luggage a bit better, not work as hard on the highways, and I'd bet they have larger oil capacities when compared to the 400. The other way to go about it would have been to try to acquire whatever is really commonly ridden in central/south America. Sorta like the cameraman in long-way-round riding the crazy 2t Russian bike. Then, if they had problems, they may have been able to source proper replacement parts properly.

What else should they have done, n8?

This is what we'd recommend for anyone planning to do this trip (especially if you don't have mechanical skills) because they are cheap, easy to get parts and work done, get good gas mileage, aren't flashy and are lightweight for the dirt. We still don't really regret our choice because we have to carry a lot of stuff for the video blogging and we've greatly enjoyed our passengers. A little local bike with 2 people and luggage probably couldn't make it up the Andes. Here's our newest video, we had a lot of fun with it, did something different. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEKmn3rpepI

nsaP posted:What else should they have done, n8? Thanks for asking buddy! I would have replaced all the normally replaced electrical poo poo before leaving. Brand new battery, new signal bulbs, new headlight bulb. Have the motor completely gone through - not necessarily a rebuild, but at least checking the valves/timing chain/leakdown check. Basically doing every sort of maintenance item one might do all at once. Then when things break I think a little more patience and a little less roadside duct tape repairing. Take a little more time to properly fix things because I'm pretty sure at least some of the problems they're still having on the bikes are a result of bad prior fixes. That said I think they've done an amazing job and I'm still shocked they haven't killed each other. I'd be interested to hear how you guys have managed to get along for so long working together so closely...

Thanks for all the positive feedback on the Galapagos vid, maybe we'll do something like it in the future. This one is back to the usual style, we hop a ride in a hippie van! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfQsCu6RfWg

Has the stove given you any problems at all? haha it's funny you should ask now, since after a year of incredible reliability it just started to poo poo itself. I don't fault the stove. We've been burning dirty gasoline for over a year without -any- maintenance and it ran like a champ up til now. I finally sat down to look through the owner's manual and I think it's just a bad seal (and there's a replacement in the kit) so maybe today I'll sit down and make a "How to Fix your MSR Whisperlite" video. Hopefully it works because food in Chile is $$$ and we need to make some pasta!

That silicone you ended up using will be fine as long as it sets up well. Love that "ratchet"

Another great video! I have successfully used salt to clean pots, pans, and cups when water isn't available. It's abrasive, like sand, yet dissolves so you don't grind your teeth down when you inevitably leave a pocket of grit in one of the rivet holes or something. Plus, salt is sometimes free at restaurants and stuff. Not as free as sand, though, I guess.
