I was just thinking earlier how there haven't been that many good albums so far this year despite being in its 3rd month already, then I listened to this track and it shut me right the hell up :swoon:

Speaking of math rock, Mutiny on the Bounty is loving great.

Their latest, Digital Tropics (Bandcamp) is just straight math with plenty of bass and synth but dynamic as hell. Their debut Danger Mouth (Bandcamp) is a mix of math with post-hardcore vocals which I like even more.

And also check out Ancient Mentals debut as well (Bandcamp). It's only 20 minutes long buts its a great mix of djent and math.

E: Prune Deer and Dirgahayu are awesome. Thanks for the recs.

Seconding, toe's drums are what makes their sound pop.

Alrighty. Despite my username, I'm actually a drummer. SOOOOO let's get started

toe's first song (Velvet Blanc) was on a split with pele. Here's pele's contribution to that, which has similar elements https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gy_MfUMC9o8

toe's drummer (Kashikura Takashi) has played with Hotel New Tokyo, and their drummer has a similar style to him https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzeuqqSENNM

toe are kinda popular and have been contracted to play behind some pop singers, e.g. on Toki Asako's track Talk Show https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Mwaosp9DdQ. They also covered the song 8.6 by HUSKING BEE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z16T6lgfZI0 (here's the original for reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7aC8be5CG4)

Here's an abbreviated version of After Long Tomorrow they did with Maia Hirasawa https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vt8LpmEmvZ0. Here's a track she's on I found that I'm 90% sure is played by toe. It's definitely Kashikura drumming. Finding music he's played on would be *so* much easier if I knew more than rudimentary Japanese. Here I Am https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMt4VVre--4.

toe/Kashikura often collaborate with ACO. Here're some tunes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-7Gkbca-dg, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sgpyi5vSoMU, and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1x7JdR3JbVU.

He also plays with the band Corner https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F60Ua8h6Hk4

and the HIATUS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ltxi-8twLk

and has written music for a company that makes modular shoes?? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwGSKjAEoTg and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUbiYI1AyrQ

and played/wrote music for a fashion thing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOIY68-irwk&t=383s

and had a hand in writing this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mwb-Hk34xC4

Here he is playing at is what is essentially a free jazz drum jam https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3vV-hOaZrQ, clips of a few tracks in the studio https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQuJ_0j2WUA, and jamming with a pianist to promote Shure's MV88 cell phone plug-in mic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkZl0qFagaI.

Sometimes he sits in on a tune for a band, probably for popularity reasons https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtaAsGryHp8. I know I found a few more of these at one point.

Here's a band called Chinese Football (probably a play on American Football) that's been sitting in my watch later list for a couple months. I just skimmed through it and the groove/note choice feels like Kashikura sooo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsR8QDP46xg.

This was also sitting in my watch later list. It's definitely Kashikura, maybe the rest of toe too. He uses a lot of material from 8.6 and ideas he used on toe's The Future Is Now EP https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yP7zdHUXgUA

Here's what was initially released as a cover of toe's song Tsuki Kake, but it turns out it's toe themselves playing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XffTozIRoAU

Kashikura's been interviewed for DRUM! magazine and a friend bought be a copy of it when she was in Japan for business. As you'd expect, I can't read it. I really should get it translated...

toe's indie record label (iirc started by them so they didn't have to release an album every couple years) has some other bands on it: Mouse on the Keys (Kashikura has either been drum technician or done drum programming for them, and I wanna say he produced an album or some songs of theirs), Enemies, and Tangled Hair. Mouse on the Keys are fantastic, but I haven't checked out the other two yet. Fox Capture Plan are similar to Mouse on the Keys if you like them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgdUaABOUS4

NotKashikuraChat: Illion is a cool project a friend told me about a few years ago, and the drumming is somewhat similar. Totally different vibe though. BEEHIVE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylKv5rqaej0 and PLANETARIAN https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYF2Vdv7Emk are good songs.

Here's a really cool cover of Goodbye. Any band that's covered toe is definitely going to sound a bit like them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ah6uKYCqgPc

Tangentially, I'm transcribing all the drum parts on toe's music and if you know anyone who can proofread them send me a PM.

Question for those who've gone to the Deafheaven/TWDY/ERR shows: how long did Emma and TWDY play? I'm not really a fan of Deafheaven (not for lack of trying) but I'm still debating going tonight, weighing whether I think the drive and ticket will be worth it.

e: Nevermind, apparently both Emma and TWDY are off the bill for tonight due to a "scheduling conflict." Not sure why, but I guess that answers whether or not I'm going.

They'd bumped a few shows the last few days, yesterday was Boston. If they're driving, it'd be a 11ish hour drive, meaning if they wanted a decent night's sleep, they'd be getting into town with little time to spare. I sorta get it, but it also means they kinda didn't consider stuff in advance. Sad, but oh well.

Also I saw Caspian live for the 4th time tonight and holy gently caress, I've said it in this thread before but if you like post-rock and want to go see an energetic live show, go see Caspian :eyepop:

The bill was pretty weird though. They were opening for Katatonia, who I had never heard before yesterday but they're from Sweden and they've been around for almost 30 years and apparently they're kind of a big deal or something? There wasn't a big crowd and everyone else at the show seemed to be there for Katatonia. They were mostly older metalheads.

Also this tech/speed metal band named Uncured played before Caspian, so there was a weird tonal shift going from Uncured to Caspian and then Katatonia. I felt like Caspian brought the most energy of all of them, though.

I saw Caspian last November and they were a let down, at least compared to other shows (God is an Astronaut, Russian Circles, etc.) I'd seen that year. To each their own though, maybe they needed to prove something while being sandwiched into that weird metal-group bill.

Got tickets to Mogwai in December. I was going to pick up tix for Do Make Say Think but I'm recently unemployed and have to kind of pick-and-choose what I go see.

Katatonia started out as a melodic death metal band with a melancholy bent and then became a sad heavy alternative rock band. They're pretty highly regarded but I've always found them boring.

Last time I saw Caspian they had Circle Takes the Square with them, which is equally if not more of a tonal shift.

Sometimes the genres are mixed like that in shows because it's more of an "here's something else you might like" kinda thing or just a showcase of cool semi-independent bands. I love hearing something different in a support band.

Henchman of Santa

I feel like post-rock bands often play with wildly different support acts because it breaks up some of the monotony that can be inherent in the genre. The closest thing to an all post-rock bill I've seen was Caspian and 65daysofstatic co-headlining with The a World is a Beautiful Place I support. TWIABP have post-rock leanings but they are primarily an emo band.

Fair enough - as Rageaholic Monkey said, yeah it was in 2008. I just remember it was very harsh vocals and way energetic, compared to the instrumental/relaxed/chillness of Eluvium and EITS. Screamo I guess was my all-encompassing term for harsh vocals
