I'm having an extremely hard time wrapping my head around this guy's rhetoric.

Is he legit implying that only risk groups are "at" risk of contracting the virus, and therefore, places containing non-at-risk-group folks need not be closed? :psyduck:

Despite Laschet promising staffing for Monday and Tuesday so people with jobs actually have a chance to think of something the local schools seem to just tell parents to go gently caress themselves, because teachers will take any excuse to not do their job.

There will definitely be grandparents press-ganged into watching vectors now.

Labour law trivia: Schools closing down is a risk of the employee and does not count as "My child is sick" sick leave.

Company owner, in a delightful meeting yesterday, basically said "it's unpaid leave", followed by "I don't give a gently caress, since my wife has to deal with the kids", followed by "our scrum master doesn't do proper work anyway and if she is 'working from home' she won't be working either way". He also said that herd immunity is great, that he doesn't mind his children running around likely getting infected, and that really, the only thing that matters is "Augenmaß zu haben", i.e. to just continue, no questions asked.

So yeah, even if Corona gets under control right quick it will definitely show all the Sollbruchstellen of the last 20 years of neoliberal reforms.

I'm not so good with business economics, are the debt/tax relief and greater access to credit that they announced yesterday likely to help small businesses like cafes? A friend was talking to their local cafe owner and they said if they stay closed for longer than 2 weeks they're hosed, but that was before this announcement

Probably not, because while they could provide (free) liquidity the small business would still suffer the losses. Liquidity just keeps them from going insolvent right now, but I'm skeptical if stuff like small cafes can tough it out long enough to recover from the losses.

Their hospitals went beyond capacity, so doctors had to pick and choose who gets any treatment at all on a case by case basis. Turns out that's not good!

Hi there, would you like to try some spicy products?

Apparently the supply situation in most of the non-prestigious hospitals is already so bad outside of a pandemic that maybe half the personnel can be covered with essential medical PPE on a good day.

Now expand that to supplies required for patients and add a pandemic. I'm guessing they're operating on a legit triage basis at this point.

Higher level contacts at clients as well as our firm have been in home office way before numbers got big and people became aware if how hosed Italy was.

Germany will follow the same infection curve as other countries, because Entscheidungsträger in Business and politics have clung to a "It cannot happen here/Number has to stay up" arrogance.

I don't blame anybody for skipping my Corona shitposts, but the post about infections being known at certain big firms for days before those came up in the press? Not an isolated incident based on what clients have told off the record.

(To be clear, that isn't a shadowy conspiracy by business ghouls. It is actually rational due to hosed up incentives. If you are the first to respond publically and hard, you will get crucified in the market if things turn out less worse than expected.)

Speaking of perverse incentives, between professional services age structure, up-or-out policies and the knock-on effects of a Realwirtschaft dip, it would actually be in my interest for things to get worse right quick, so it frees up advancement opportunities and still give me enough time to profut from post-recession recovery before I retire in my mid-40s.

I had a job interview in NRW scheduled for next week, to which I was planning to drive from Poland. Poland closed its borders yesterday. Not only did the company not cancel, despite being in the corona hot spot, the headhunter was messaging me at 10 pm on a Friday if I’m sure I can’t make it, because it would be “unfortunate”. Motherfucker, I’m not going through a 14 day quarantine (not to mention getting infected) just so you can get your interview bonus. Also, wtf is that business still running.

That's what I was thinking.. capital is still king, and credit still needs to be repaid. If they don't go under and/or get bought out by entities rich enough to weather the storm and then exploit relative poverty, they've just been put back however many months/years of stable profit before they can be safe again. Depending on the severity of their losses and how onerous the credit repayment terms are

Antibiotics sound like a good investment. Very valuable because most people prefer not to die and very easy to hide and move due to the size of the packages. Push comes to shove, you can even hide them in various body holes. Can't do that with water purifying tablets or bullets. :hai:

Sounds like doctors and medical fachkräfte in general are going to do well. If you are still under 40 I would even consider a quick Medizinstudium a good investment.

Private households make up for way less than 10% of flour consumption. People buying pasta like crazy also drives up the demand for flour on the producer side. I dont think there's much stockpiling going on there as that would cost them precious money and it's rather a logistics problem. I don't think a grocery store has huge proft margins when selling flour, so why should they reorganize their whole chain of supply and store layout? Especially since people are buying stockable products, this simply means what the store sells today they won't sell in June.

It also shows how spoiled we've become if a few empty spots in the shelves (that get resupplied within 24h) seem like the zombie apocalypse. If Corona hits the Ivory Coast I'd stock up on chocolate, though.
