i know i mentioned it before but my introduction to harsh vocal stuff was the dude in my highschool who wore a leather jacket every day gave me some overkill tapes to borrow and then it was "ok now check out this" and i was listening to butchered at birth and i was sold

I just gradually got into harsh vocals, a bunch of bands like Opeth and Isis had me learning to "put up" with them, and I didn't really notice when I started to actually actively enjoy them but I know Dead Congregation's Promulgation of the Fall was the first fully harsh vocals album that made me realise "hang on, I actually loved that whole album, vocals included".

A little while later I went back to albums I'd tried and bounced off because they had no clean vocals in the past and ended up loving a lot of them.

Dude is or at least was a talented musician but yeah. I am the same age as him, also Norwegian, and was into some of the same things as him back then (music and rpgs). Different part of the country, never met him, but he sure had a reputation as a real prick well before the whole murder and arson debacle. I guess assholes gonna rear end in a top hat.

The eeriest thing about Varg is that pretty much everything he’s done has been in play since he was first involved in the scene. He knew exactly how to navigate and take advantage. Dude had a laser focus on doing exactly what he wanted and unfortunately it seems to have worked out for him for the most part. I still need to revisit my favorite Burzum albums eventually but eh they’ve got so much baggage “now” that I haven’t bothered in years.

Of all the dead too young musicians Euro is definitely one of the more frustrating ones. I really wish we could’ve seen him grow with the genre.

Wouldn't really file this under black metal even, it has some elements of it but also a bunch of folky/symphonic and even power metal elements thrown in? Weird mixture, but really loving pretty.

EDIT: The parts with the ethereal lady vocals remind me a lot of Battlelore.

Son of a loving bitch. 48 is way too loving young, man. As much as I loved his work with Death and Cynic, I always thought Aghora deserved some more recognition, even if it wasn't as extreme. A very diverse and amazing career he has left as his legacy.

Probably Opeth, specifically the Morningrise album.

E: or possibly Fear Factory, can't remember if I got Demanufacture before I got Morningrise.

Fear Factory and Opeth were probably the two first ones for me, too. I borrowed Obsolete and Blackwater Park from my local library constantly back then. Didn't even have a computer at home at the time.

Sean Reinart only being 48 blows my mind. Dude was already sensational thirty years ago. Super bummed he's gone this early.

I might have to change my earliest harsh vocals, they might have come from the U68 Power Hour, a metal video show on UHF tv in the mid 80s in the NYC area. They played a lot of the same stuff all the time like this great commercial for L’amour, a classic brooklyn metal club

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4s_EKNl0gI

The played Iron Fist all the time along with less sick stuff like Girlschool but this one really blew me away, seeing those pumped up metalheads in the crowd got me psyched to see shows like this and the song definitely turned me on to heavier metal than I had been into before

there used to be a brutal death metal band from the detroit area called gutrot that when their vocalist went to jail, they released a demo called "brian's in jail" that was just an instrumental.
