I've recommended it before, but again, if anyone has Steam and about 10-15 hours to kill then you should really get Ys: The Oath in Felghana. It's fast paced, great fun and the bosses are challenging without being stupidly difficult. I loved it, after finding myself getting increasingly bored with slow starting games or games that lost my interest halfway through. I swear it seems like the Ys games are really underappreciated, but they're really more fun than I've had in years playing rpgs

You don't even need the gift if you don't feel like it. Mind Heal is pretty cheap for a spell that fully restores your HP. I give it to every human character for the final bosses.

I've picked it up on steam and enjoyed it a bunch, though I've not put too much time into it so I can't offer to depthy of an opinion. I'd think it's safe to say that if you're familiar with the series/developer enough to enjoy what they do it's a nice pick-up and a hell of a lot cheaper than getting Spiderweb's games previously.

Seconded! I beat it on normal a few weeks ago, and it was a fun romp. My favorite parts of the game were all of the boss fights. They really threw me for a loop in terms of how much imagination I apparently lack, or maybe I'm just conditioned by Zelda for the solutions to be a bit more obvious in presentation or for the game to assume I would, in fact, throw myself face first at these encounters. There were quite a few bosses where I really forgot that the elemental brace moves are so cleverly designed, especially using the wind brace to avoid attacks.

I didn't really love the story, but it served its purpose and fits the setting enough. Are the Legend of Heroes games like Ys at all? I still have Ys 7 for my PS2, but I'm actually more drawn to these PC versions. I'd love it if XSEED brought more of them to Steam.

The Trails in the Sky games are nothing like Ys at all. They're very long turn-based RPGs. I heard it takes a good 20 hours or so for the first game to get going, but it gets a lot better after that. The second game is a direct sequel (it literally starts the day after the first game ends), and XSeed is still working on it because its almost twice as long as the first game.

Is this the PSP or PC we're talking about? I know the game is in three parts and they were on PC, but there were PSP versions if I'm not mistaken. I'd still really like a PC release if possible, if the Steam releases of Ys: Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin are successful or whatever metric they're using to do a translation of these PC installments.

SaGa Frontier is the only other game with prerendered CG backgrounds that Square released around the same time as FFVII, and it has the same unpolished and inconsistently scaled but creative, varied and detailed artwork. And there's so much of it. I really like the different moods evoked by the different regions, and even though the story, characters, and NPC interactions are minimal, the world(s) still feel vibrant. Plus the battle system is fun. I liked the Gameboy Final Fantasy Legend (aka SaGa) games, and Frontier is really just an evolution of those.

Speaking of which, has anyone ever played any of the SNES Romancing SaGa games, especially 3? Is it worth a try?

They've only been working on the PSP versions. The second game presents a problem because its on two UMDs (and it switches between the two), and Sony has no way of converting the game to a digital format.

With the success of Ys: Oath in Felghana on Steam, XSeed is considering releasing the Trails in the Sky Trilogy on there, but there nothing is for sure right now.

3 is really quite good if you're into the SaGa style of gaming, but the fan translation is unfinished and not particularly great. It can be played all the way through though!

Oh, I fuckin' LOVE 3. Its soundtrack is Kenji Ito's magnum opus, I think. Seconding Wendell's sentiments: the translation is a bag of rear end, but the game is still very playable and you'll know what's going on. Just grind the poo poo out of your HP and especially your MP, I rarely use magic and it always screws me later on and you'll never feel left in the dust.

When you pick it up, just don't play Sara's story (nor Mikhail's). Sara's story sometimes forces you into a really weird advanced-players-only battle mode in which you can't issue individual commands and you probably won't even know exists on your first playthrough, and Mikhail's story is full of weird and poorly-explained action strategy battle things (well "action mash buttons hope you get lucky battle things" would be a more accurate description), but I have this suspicion that the translation does a really bad job of explaining what's going on.

Romancing SaGa was remade for the PS2. I absolutely adore it, but I can honestly say the SaGa series is my favorite RPG series so my take that with a grain of salt. If you like other SaGa games, though, you'd probably like it.

Do bosses and/or random battles scale with ability levels? I'm going after the first rune in koorong as Blue and the big bugs that jump on you in the treasure room literlly stomped my party, so I went back for some equipment and fought some on the way back, and now it seems like the bugs have more hp than before.

The game has 9 Battle Ranks. It goes up as your stats go up. It determines what enemies you fight, and the stats for bosses. Bosses will get stronger as your battle rank increases, but this varies depending on the boss you are fighting. The Rune Quest bosses are pretty easy, and they don't get much stronger as the Battle Rank increases.

I'm actually really glad to hear that. The game has always interested me that had the seed of a good idea, since I think an RPG focused around dealing with your father's death or whatever the hell it ended up being is really novel. And that skill snowflake is a great visual design! But then the more I heard about the gameplay, the more I was paradoxically intrigued and afraid, so I've been hoping that they actually make something remotely playable.

I can deal with janky.

With Chrono Trigger now done with, I'm going to pick up my next Nintendo DS RPG. I own both Final Fantasy IV and Dragon Quest VI (and V, but that turned out to be a pirate version that doesn't work on my DSi :( ) so I am going to play either of those now.

I absolutely loved Dragon Quest IV and IX, and I've never actually finished a Final Fantasy game. I'm sorta leaning more towards playing DQVI now - but which of these two do you guys think is the better game?

It's also worth noting that there are a few areas that will have enemies that are above or below your current battle rank. Most notably are the Yorkland Swamp and Bio Lab in Shrike which have enemies that are a few battle ranks above what you'll usually fight and when you're nearing the end of the game will usually have the strongest enemies available.

FFIV DS is sort of a controversial port. Common complaints are: the 3D doesn't look that good and mostly just increases loading times in battle, they elevated the difficulty level a bit too much, and the New Game+ system is pointlessly restrictive.

If you love Dragon Quest, then you can't go wrong with More Dragon Quest, provided you're warned in advance about the unique problems of I, II, and VII, which at any rate don't apply to VI. So there's my recommendation.

Both FFIV DS and DQVI DS are great games, but it's hard for me to put DQVI above FFIV. Mostly because I guess DQVI is my least favorite of the trilogy (though still excellent) and FFIV is a classic in its own right. Now if you were doing a DQV DS vs. FFIV DS, it'd probably be a different story.

I'd say go with FFIV if only because it'd be something different, where as there really isn't anything DQVI does differently that is better than either DQIV or DQIX. But, again, I want to emphasize that it is still a great game and a great port.

If you can, I highly recommend you try to get a copy of Dragon Quest V, it's the best in its series and if you loved IV and IX it's right up your alley. VI is good too and it has a class system as well, similar to IX.

I wouldn't recommend trying FFIV DS, as it's mainly for people who want a challenge as the difficulty was raised significantly from other versions.

Saga Frontier is kind of like BoF DQ in which there is an initial hump you have to get over to understand the gameplay mechanics. It's frustrating at first, but once you get a good idea of how to make your characters better and where to do it without dieing too frequently it becomes a lot of fun.

I agree with your assessment of the DQ games - V is a must play. VI is still good but feels very grindy compared to IV and V. I disagree that FFIV is overly difficult though. It does have some difficulty spikes compared to the original but it's not a slog. I'd place it easier than DQVI honestly. Also it's worth playing if you have any love for the original just to see the re imagining of the sprites rendered in 3D. I think it works pretty well.

It's just luck. What I did was after getting a decent amount of coins (~100) I found some TV to watch and hit the slots savescumming my way to profits. When you make decent profits, save, and hit up the more expensive slots to try and speed up the process. If you're lucky you'll get a good jackpot on the high rollers slots then you never need to do the casino ever again. Find a good TV show to watch, or sports. It's dumb and grindy but you can get some decent rewards if you do it soon enough. Stay away from the cards, I don't remember the specifics but I remember it having really lovely returns for worse odds.

The game will be properly balanced if you avoid the casinos, or you can give yourself a lasting advantage if you savescum for the best rewards. The odds in Dragon Quest casinos favor the player.

Ask yourself these questions: Do I want to spend time gambling in a video game? Do I want to have early access to powerful equipment? The decision should be based entirely on what you expect would be fun; there are no surprises in the casino.
