Saw Russian Circles for the 3rd time tonight. Jesus, how do they keep getting better every time I see them?! I think the first time I saw them was like 5 years ago, and they were better the next time and even better this time.

Definitely don't miss them if they're playing near you!

They're touring Australia in April with Tangled Thoughts of Leaving and We Lost the Sea as supports. Amazing lineup!

Also I'm not sure I've even heard any Talk Talk stuff aside from It's My Life, or if I have I can't remember now. From what I've heard, though, they were pioneers in post-rock, so RIP Mark Hollis.

Not sure where else to post this since the last Swans thread has been archived, but Michael Gira has released some details about the next Swans album and posted a handful of demos:

There was a Swans thread? gently caress, I missed that.

I can't believe it's already been almost 3 years since The Glowing Man and even longer since I first heard got into them through The Seer. The first time I heard Avatar was almost a transcendental experience. But I've listened to the albums so much they don't have nearly as much punch as they used to. It's basically working music for me now. :(

The demos are nice even if very minimal for now... I wasn't sure what Gira would do after he declared the end of Swans, but I guess it won't be that far from their recent stuff.

I'm still peeved about seeing them live. When they were touring for The Seer, I had tickets but missed them due to a family thing. Then the following tour they skipped my town altogether.

Yeah, I have this same experience. The first time I heard Bring The Sun it's like it flipped a switch in my brain. That imperceptibly gradual build from one repetitive little guitar riff to a mindblowing apocalyptic wall of sound is the closest thing I've had to a religious experience in music. I'm still chasing that first high but I feel like it might be a once in a lifetime kind of experience.

But I have a ton of respect for Gira to recognize that this chapter in Swans has accomplished everything it can. Really hoping the next album switches the sound up enough to keep it fresh but still retains the otherworldly mystique.

I'll reserve judgement until I've heard the whole album but, having listened to Indviduation a lot recently, I think I prefer their straight instrumental tracks.

I dig the tenor vocals but didn't care for that particular track as much as their previous albums

If you haven't listened to their first EP it's basically straight instrumental metal with no vocals or synths (iirc)

Frances the Mute might just be the single album that pissed me off the most, ever, because it's simultaneously so close to, and so far from being, a good album.

Like I can still remember getting it off Limewire or whatever in 2004 and listening to it and just being so annoyed. I thought "is this how other people react to Xiu Xiu or Mr. Bungle?"

FTM came out when I was 14 and I got it the day it came out and couldn't stop listening to it. I remember finding something new to love about it every single time. I'd bring it in my Discman to school and listen to it like every day while waiting to be picked up.

Even now, I'd still consider it one of my all-time favorite albums. It has some slow parts, sure, but that's prog alright!

SmokinDan

Deloused wins for me because it was what got me into prog when I was 15 but FTM owns as well.

Latitudes released their new album a couple of weeks ago and it's really good. I was skeptical of the vocals but they fit in really well.

Babies.

The key to liking FTM is that someone made an edit taking out all the ambient spacy bullshit and it makes it SO MUCH BETTER.

Like I love TMV but when one of the songs has like three straight minutes of frogs croaking and the title song has like 8 minutes of a bell slowly ringing, it's definitely something you can remove and still keep the feeling of the album.

Lost Songs is pretty good and not at all proggy. Honestly I mostly shared that because it’s the most obnoxiously named tour package in history.
