I still can't believe how dumb this is. It'd be one thing if the Rams had been a smashing success among fans since relocation, or if they had at least waited a few seasons to see how that played out. But what out of the available data screamed "This is a good idea" to immediately give LA two teams when the experiment with the first one isn't even over?a new study bible! posted:Maybe they wanted a logo that's crying Jordan proof. I wish the Chargers could fail and fold like one of those forgotten teams from the early NFL but the league sadly wouldn't let that happen.

I think this will end up being the purest test of what the modern NFL product really means/aims to be. The NFL is feeling more and more like a fully packaged product to be consumed away from the actual field (HD broadcasts, fantasy football) than actually going to the game in person. Will it really matter if the Chargers play in a crap stadium for two years/end up playing second fiddle to the Rams in Los Angeles proper? They're still 1/32 of the NFL itself. (Note: I don't necessarily believe that this is unimportant, but this seems to be the hypothesis that will be tested)

Still, the fact that he got the Mayor of Indy to contact his neighbor who was the CEO of Mayflower to send moving trucks to Baltimore immediately, and then to have them take different routes to get to Indy is insane. As soon as they hit Indiana they got police escort.

It's still amazing how two-faced an owner can be, even on the same day. After that whole "San Diego will always be home" letter this morning:quote:"I'm looking forward, not backwards," he told ESPN in a brief phone conversation. "I spent half my life here. I leave behind a lot of friends and lot of great memories, but life goes on. There are always a lot of changes in life, and we know this is not going to be easy. But we made a decision, we're committed to it, and our family is 100 percent behind it. What's happened has happened."

EugeneJ posted:Won't the owners be pissed because the small capacity means less revenue to share I may be mistaken but if I recall correctly: -Media market money (TV ad revenue, basically) goes 100% to the league to be shared equally among owners/teams -Ticket sales is usually for the team, although sometimes part of that can go to the city/owner of the land/etc. depending on the deal that was done to get the stadium built -In-stadium concession + merch sales goes 100% to the owner -Non-in-stadium merch goes mostly to the owner, with a cut going to the league? I think? In any case, the #1 thing the league cares about is viability of the NFL on the whole, and the #1 thing the owners care about is total media market revenues. The owners have effectively a veto over any proposed team move, while the league has a lot of influence in that they can offer financing, charge relocation fees, etc. The above is probably not 100% correct but I'm quite sure about the media market factor being the thing the owners collectively care about the most.

But again, their window is pretty small. I think they can challenge for the division with a solid draft. They have the benefit of playing a very weak set of unique opponents (Browns/Jaguars) as compared to the other AFC West teams and their game against the Patriots is on the road (so they don't have to burn a home game on a lost cause).
