Even though it's still super short because it's the demo, Ion Maiden is extremely good for what there is. If you decide to try out wolf 3d, I recommend skipping straight to Spear of Destiny, since the level design is much more interesting in it compared to the original game. Blake Stone is a good alternative, as well. Rise of the Triad is fun, but the level design is very hit or miss. My favorite sprite FPS is a hypothetical version of Duke 3d with crushing turned off Otherwise, I'd be split between Heretic and Hexen, probably Hexen but it's not popular for its cross-map switch hunts (but I like switch hunts)

Yeah play Hexen with a guide or you probably won’t make it to the end.

blake stone: planet strike had some loving fabulous weapons, not to mention some bananas enemy types i'm imagining a world where a 3rd blake stone was built on the duke engine, poo poo would have owned edit: delta force was way ahead of its time and a blast and also hell of stupid due to some really fuckin insanely dumb ai; it was like dumb volumetric hidden and dangerous, or just volumetric project igi since that game was also touched in the head

I need to finish Planet Strike, but Blake Stone is awesome and I wish we'd get a new one. Or a really good mod even.

We're using 3.0, which actually has it disabled for the most part. In my quick check through of a number of the maps, it appears to be on a map by map basis though. I do have a number of custom maps which might or might not have it enabled. Do you know if there's a server setting I can flip to try to make it on by default because you're right, we should definitely have that going normally.

It took me a while to get into, i wasnt a huge fan of the first episode, but the next two episodes are great and the weapons are good. i'm on the aztec temple episode now and its great. Amid Evil is fantastic. I actually just started the episode they put out a month or two ago "The Forges" last night. gently caress those rolling spike balls. I remember some goons on here saying that the enemy AI and weapon feel were pretty bleh when it came out, but they fixed that up pretty quick. I really love the level design and environments that you go through in it.

Oh, I didn't know it came out. I guess it slipped past me that there was a release date in that trailer that came out a while back. I'll try it! edit: Also, to the person a while back who asked why you need the official doom 2 wad to play it, the author is apparently working on stripping it so that it's not necessary anymore. So that's cool. CJacobs fucked around with this message at 02:38 on Nov 5, 2018 |

In my opinion, Amid Evil would be garbage (pretty garbage, but garbage nonetheless) if it weren't for the AI adjustments they made a while back. At higher difficulties, every fight devolved into you backpeddaling in circles while kiting everything around until you could kill it to death.

Bushmaori posted:So what are your guys favorite sprite based fps games? Looking for ones I should play next. You know, a lot of people say this, and I get it; space ships and stations aren't nearly as relatable as going into a bookstore or a movie theatre, or bathroom. And full disclosure, I used to say the same thing as you did here. But now, I have to admit, the more I played of them, the more I liked them. I think the only one I really didn't like was the first one. After that, I feel they get much better, much more creative. Oddly enough, they kind of remind me of Doom's level design.

I disliked the "infection"/"parasite" space levels in Duke 3D, but thought the rest were interesting. But I haven't played Duke in many years so I don't know how I feel about them today.

The worst level in Duke 3D is the post office stage in one of the expansions because I was stuck on it for days.

I used to like Duke more than Doom. Now they've swapped. Doom has better weapons and gunplay, and a significantly better mod community. It's just so rare for cool new stuff to come out for Duke, and a monthly occurrence with Doom.

The thing I hate about Duke is the overabundance of hitscan bullet sponges. Doom has the perfect balance.

Unreal has this problem to; occasionally I want to use a weapon that can obliterate nearly any enemy instantly to take a break from juggling all the situational weapons. If the pig cops died with one shotgun blast instead of 2, and the lizardmen were a bit weaker, with less damaging attacks, I think it would be immensely better overall.

Every enemy in Duke 3D can kill you extremely quickly if you're not on top of your poo poo 100% of the time. In DOOM, it's like they chip your health off. In Duke, it's huge chunks and then you're dead. E: I like it.

I never really had an issue with Episode 2 of Duke3D. They're not the best, but they're also not some of the Episode 4 levels like Derelict. That one was a miserable slog.Casimir Radon posted:I used to like Duke more than Doom. Now they've swapped. Doom has better weapons and gunplay, and a significantly better mod community. Playing the Urban Map Pack from the big collection, far more often than I'd like I spend a lot of time wandering around wondering what little tiny thing I missed that I need to do to progress. Still plenty of good poo poo in there, though.

If you're afraid of spiders, do not play Total Chaos. It's very bad in that regard. My verdict is that it's really fun! Tense, atmospheric, and it really feels like a struggle to survive with the difficulty and number of plates you gotta spin with radiation/hunger/bleeding. The combat isn't very tedious, enemies have a bit too much health for how many there are but attacking is weighty and satisfying. Lots of different options for melee too. The inventory management is a bit clunky but it's a technological marvel that it works as well as it does. The mod is gorgeous and well-detailed, graphics that look sharp and are almost entirely completely custom. I think I saw like... 1 texture from Blood. I really recommend you play it if you like horror mods or total conversions because it is about as far from Doom as you can get. CJacobs fucked around with this message at 01:23 on Nov 6, 2018 |

CJacobs posted:If you're afraid of spiders, do not play Total Chaos. It's very bad in that regard. Few questions: How satisfying does melee feel and how quickly do weapons degrade? What's the save system like? Finally, I see there's crafting; is there too much crafting?

Melee combat is good! You can spam a three-hit combo with your normal attack or hold down the alt-fire for a charge attack that does more damage the more stamina you use. Blood and gribbly bits fly everywhere when you hit enemies and they react nicely to being smacked around with animations and stuff. Crafting is interesting, it's more for creating new items from materials than combining your already existing items to make more powerful ones. I didn't really ever find it necessary but I can see the applications for it. You can do stuff like cook food to make it heal and remove more hunger, make emergency weapons from scrap metal, and add alcohol to rags to make blood clotting bandages. There are a TON of utility items and all of them heal a lot of one bar but do a little damage to another bar, so there's a checks and balances kind of thing to keep yourself in top condition. It's very cool. Also, there is no save system, it's Doom. You can save whenever you want. The game does auto-save when you do something important though.
