I'm glad that Avery Brooks hates Star Trek and that DS9 is unpopular, if it prevents this proposed DS9 series 8 from happening. What did poor Nog do to the writers? It’s probably as simple as they are TV people and that is the kind of TV that is being made right now. Nothing but SHOCKING TWISTS and UNEXPECTED DEATHS and CHARACTERS DOING SOMETHING COMPLETELY OUT OF CHARACTER BECAUSE THEY RAN OUT OF IDEAS.

It's a first episode rough outline, not even a draft. For all we know in the next episode Bashir is revealed as not working for section 31, but infiltrating them to stop their plans(they said only maybe he's their leader, they didn't say he is the leader, they were throwing ideas around) and Kira's alliance with the Jem Hadar would be shown to be good as they help save the day.

I could swear I read somewhere that 3D chess rules had been fully fleshed out, and at the time no less! If so, I'm surprised it didn't become really popular. Although, it'd be a pain to carry it around, unless it folded up, in which case it'd prolly be pretty pricey. Also you can't exactly have tables at the park with 3D boards on them.

Zillions of chess variants have been invented, some of which include a third dimension. None have ever really caught on, at least not in the last 500 years. (Chess960 is easily the most popular one, and and even that is still just an obscure little variant.) The only thing the Star Trek one has going for it is, well, that it appears in Star Trek. There aren't even "official" rules for Trek 3-D chess. Over the years, various parties have come up with their own sets of rules, all variations on the same general theme. I'm sure they're at least playable, but they were all handicapped by being designed to work around an existing TV prop, instead of to be a good game from the ground up.

To be fair on the Poker thing, even without the financal aspect it gives you a chance to get one over on your crew members, practice being a lil' shady. Developing a good poker face is also key in many political situations, how can a captain learn to bluff without practicing on his friends first? Poker has a few applications, and it's still fun to push other people out of the game by freaking them out. Especially if you can get the Klingon to fold, that probably feels really good on the old ego. "How was work hon?" "I intimidated a Klingon, I feel indestructible!"

Let's be honest, nobody in the trek future ever gave up desire for personal gain or victory, but what that meant just changed because of replicators. When he wasn't doing space poo poo Kirk lived in a bigass apartment full of priceless antiques. This always bothered me about TNG. They used the Enterprise as the flagship and to swing their dicks around. I hated hearing people say “they wouldn’t send a Galaxy class ship just for X” to make the point that it was for something other than exploring.

I never paid much attention to the alleged crew numbers for the Enterprise in TNG, it never felt anywhere close to that full of people. Just checked and it was supposed to be a thousand? Maybe a hundred would fit with what we see on screen. The TOS Enterprise actually felt much busier since they went to the effort of hiring extras to be milling around the corridors.
