I'm glad that Avery Brooks hates Star Trek and that DS9 is unpopular, if it prevents this proposed DS9 series 8 from happening.

What did poor Nog do to the writers? Why are they making GBS threads on Bashir with a heel turn?

It's a first episode rough outline, not even a draft. For all we know in the next episode Bashir is revealed as not working for section 31, but infiltrating them to stop their plans(they said only maybe he's their leader, they didn't say he is the leader, they were throwing ideas around) and Kira's alliance with the Jem Hadar would be shown to be good as they help save the day.

Speaking of, did anybody ever work out three-dimensional chess?

My dad bought the Franklin Mint 3D chess board and it came with some rudimentary rules. It was pretty difficult to understand. I think any move could be translated across board levels, for instance a knight on board lvl2A1 could move forward two to lvl2C1, then capture a piece on, say, lvl3C2 or lvl1C2 or any of the other analogous positions on a neighboring board.

There were also small, four-square corner platforms. These could be moved onto or off of, and the platforms themselves could be moved as a play move, basically "teleporting" the piece on the platform to a vantage point over another board, allowing it new attacks of opportunity.

It was fun as gently caress, but none of us ever felt like we were doing it quite right ...

Edit: to fix my dumbass wrongness

Lovin' every minute of it.
I could swear I read somewhere that 3D chess rules had been fully fleshed out, and at the time no less! If so, I'm surprised it didn't become really popular. Although, it'd be a pain to carry it around, unless it folded up, in which case it'd prolly be pretty pricey. Also you can't exactly have tables at the park with 3D boards on them. :v:

I read that, once you learned the rules, it wasn't as good as regular chess. Hard to improve on a classic I guess.

Zillions of chess variants have been invented, some of which include a third dimension. None have ever really caught on, at least not in the last 500 years. (Chess960 is easily the most popular one, and and even that is still just an obscure little variant.) The only thing the Star Trek one has going for it is, well, that it appears in Star Trek.

There aren't even "official" rules for Trek 3-D chess. Over the years, various parties have come up with their own sets of rules, all variations on the same general theme. I'm sure they're at least playable, but they were all handicapped by being designed to work around an existing TV prop, instead of to be a good game from the ground up.

All in 1:1400 scale. Also all assembled/painted by friends who are much better at model-making than I am, and were so kind as to do so as birthday/christmas gifts.

Arcadia! Also in 1:1400!

To be fair on the Poker thing, even without the financal aspect it gives you a chance to get one over on your crew members, practice being a lil' shady. Developing a good poker face is also key in many political situations, how can a captain learn to bluff without practicing on his friends first? Poker has a few applications, and it's still fun to push other people out of the game by freaking them out. Especially if you can get the Klingon to fold, that probably feels really good on the old ego. "How was work hon?" "I intimidated a Klingon, I feel indestructible!"

With no scarcity, a benevolent socialistic government, and hundreds/thousands of solar systems which you can settle, actually it seems to me that most people could have a big rear end apartment like that if they wanted. (Though maybe not in old historic cities like San Fransisco.)

I stand by my assertion that the Galaxy class is too large. What was Starfleet thinking? You could build three ships that would fulfill the same missions adequately with the stuff in one Galaxy class.

This always bothered me about TNG. They used the Enterprise as the flagship and to swing their dicks around. I hated hearing people say “they wouldn’t send a Galaxy class ship just for X” to make the point that it was for something other than exploring.

Personally I reckon they should've properly been like 'oh yeah there's a section on the ship where oceanic sentients live and work'. And also occasionally be like 'Oh deck ten section three, that's the methane-breathers neighborhood'.

And maybe sometimes they meet up with another Federation ship and it's flooded with ammonia and has mainly ammonia crew.

I never paid much attention to the alleged crew numbers for the Enterprise in TNG, it never felt anywhere close to that full of people. Just checked and it was supposed to be a thousand? Maybe a hundred would fit with what we see on screen.

The TOS Enterprise actually felt much busier since they went to the effort of hiring extras to be milling around the corridors.

Yeah, they never could really establish size; it's a major pity they didn't have the capability to do CG crowds and set extensions to establish the scale of the Enterprise-D. Imagine if they'd been able to show the Main Shuttlebay regularly like the massive Launch Bay on Galactica.

That said given the sheer goddamn side of the ship it being fairly empty almost makes sense. It's way underpopulated for its size. Most Star Trek ships are. Voyager has fifteen decks, a hundred fifty people, that's about three people on duty per deck every shift. For a ship a third of a mile long.

The original plan for TNG had five thousand people on the Enterprise-D, but they didn't think they could ever depict that so they cut it back to a thousand.
