It doesn't here. no, but it will support an entire family at a very comfortable standard of living on a single income, which is a tremendous luxury in modern america. many families need two earners just to get by. two incomes that size is more than just comfortable, it's downright luxurious. 2 * $55k is enough to live comfortably literally anywhere in the united states. even facing the demonic property markets of the bay area.

Shaggar posted:nah just increase property taxe.. oh wait prop 13. lol. stew in your own poo poo, California the inscrutiable chinamen are already paying a property tax assessed on the inflated sale price of their recently-acquired holdings, it doesn't seem to be helping. anyway regional property bubbles are symptom. the disease is pointless geographic centralization. let techbros flood seattle and austin and portland and a bunch more cities. eventually the work will spread out enough that landlords won't be able to confiscate the majority of your earnings with impunity. an aggressive buildout of public transportation networks would help a lot too but lol racism. it's always loving racism.

There's lots of good tech jobs out in the north carolina triangle area. Nobody would brag and say that this is the "SV of" anything, but it has some redeeming features. A lot of bay area expats have migrated here, I hope the cost of living isn't too heavily impacted. Y'all are still welcome to come by! Even if you're not living in one of the major corners (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill), suburbs like cary and carrboro have a lot going for them! I think, for the size and the cost, it's a real nice area. I think buying a home might be a little expensive, but not out of the ordinary.

Mr Dog posted:There really needs to be some sort of gigantic non-occupancy tax on real estate. make Prop 13 only apply to a natural person's primary residence as specified when filing their taxes, getting their driver's license or state ID, and registering to vote (and all of those addresses must match) tax all other property at its full assessed value, including all commercial property, including any property being rented out (like that spare room on AirBnB wouldn't be covered by Prop13 even if the rest of the house is) it might keep enough of what made people wanted Prop 13 for to actually be possible j/k, it'll never happen, everyone thinks they're a temporarily embarrassed millionaire landlord with multiple vacation homes
