This is generally how I feel about the thing. I'm disappointed more than anything. Genderlocked races are a step backwards. Much like Diadem (and the fundamentals of Eureka) are also a step backwards.

Considering the history of this game (1.0 specifically) I'm concerned at how the devs aren't more concerned about the backward steps they take.
You're supposed to learn from your history and not immediately forget the lessons after you learn them :eng99:

I don't mind the races as they were introduced (the helmet/glasses thing is dumb and that seems to speak to an actual 'lack of resources' problem IMO) but if the issue was in fact a lack of resources, tell us that. Don't dress it up. If it was a lore consistency thing mandated by forces outside of the Dev's control, then tell us that too.

As it stands I expect them to add female hrothgar and male viera at some point. Anything less isn't going to fully ameliorate the disappointment I have over this.

My main issue with people complaining about gender locked races is Au'ra are basically two separate races they say are one. In practice, they are the same thing as two genderlocked races, but nobody really raised this much of a stink over them.

Also it's not healthy to stew over being disappointed because a Japanese game studio put out misogynistic stuff, because if you did that you'd never stop being sad. Play sekiro, it's hella fuckin good.

Au Ra at least had similarities even if the extreme difference is dumb. This is just "Oh no male bunnies or female Ronso adventure"

Nah, people were incredibly pissed off about the aura dimorphism, especially when the final aura barely looked anything like the concept art. There are a lot of parallels to this situation though you are right.

Dunno, feel like I've heard people complain about the sexual dimorphism of the Au-Ra on multiple occasions. Did they show off male and female at different times for Au Ra? I would assume the problem this time around is a) people had time to stew and anticipate bunny boys since the first live letter, and b) people are more aware and more tired of these tropes these days.

I calmed a little on the helmet issue after I remembered part of the reason I race changed away from Au Ra was because the horns being hard to work with, and that I had similar problems with worgen and tauren in WoW. However making a race incapable of wearing a red mage hat is still a sin.

If you think calling me names is gonna get a rise out me, think again. I like my life as an idiot!
Okay, I'm back. I went and took my dog for a nice long walk at the local park. Some fresh air did me good.

I want to apologize to everyone I upset and offended by my extreme aggressiveness. I've been under a lot of stress wrt some major deadlines and work that I've been struggling under for the last month that will affect the next few years from me. I let that stress get to me and ended up lashing out at you all both on the forums today and in discord last night.

I've been extremely looking forward to FanFest and the new news because it allows me to break from the crushing stress of my RL obligations right now. So when every discussion during/after the keynote was dominated by viera/hrothgar anger, it made me intensely frustrated as I was excited to talk about the other reveals and story speculation and all that jazz. I took things overboard and was a real dick about it, so I'm extremely sorry for that. FFXIV is good. It's cool. It's awesome. Let's hope that there is some changes that are made so that we can all enjoy this game more together.

Also, it is really loving nice to just spend some time away from all the anger and tension seeping through the community right now and just spend time in a local park. I suggest you all do it. Just relax in nature. (But also, gently caress pollen.) I'm going to do my best to just avoid commenting on hrothgar/viera issues from here on out. Not because I don't want be part of the discussion, but because I feel like I don't actually have much to contribute to it as I have so stakes in it.

So one last time, I'm very sorry to you all for how I've acted recently. The stress in my life doesn't excuse, but I hope you all can understand that I don't actually want to be a dick and want us to be a big happy family.

Memeing aside, apparently this is hinting at Summoner getting Phoenix in some form and Machinist getting more tools in Drill and Chainsaw.

While I think things were handled a bit poorly I feel like they gave a reasonable explanation of their decision process during the keynote.

1: They wanted to offer more beastly race options to players.
2: People really, *really* wanted Viera
3: They didn't have the dev power or the dev time to deliver two complete races with the expansion so they had to decide to either completely scrap one of them or make some kind of compromise to deliver both things.

I can appreciate that they really wanted to offer a beastly option considering all the races in the game currently are basically "looks human but is x" and Hrothgar do look significantly different from any other race on offer. I doubt male viera would've looked that much different from females and so it'd be more of what's mostly already on offer. They absolutely should've been upfront about bunny boys back in Europe which is probably a big reason the salt concentration is so high but I feel like their thought process and decisions are reasonable enough. It's easy to say "just give us two full races instead of this" but that downplays how much work and time goes into making a fully realized new race. Especially when you consider that Square still keeps them a relatively small team despite XIV's big success so they just have limitations.

It's absolutely okay to be disappointed that we're not getting these things but I feel like some of the more vitriolic hyperbole I see on reddit and other forums is pretty unreasonable.

Of course I could just be too easily forgiving here who knows.

Honestly I think the dev power excuse is kinda bad. Yes, they have limited dev power but they also need to figure out when to kill their darlings. If they super wanted a beast race but don't have the development time for it, save it for a future expansion instead of insisting you'll never do another new race ever again. Going "We wanted to do this right but we didn't have the man power so we just did half of the two ideas we had" feels like a bad excuse.

There will be more expansions after this. It's okay to save an idea for later and focus on executing one well instead of two poorly.

As mentioned, there's effort put into Au Ra to make them have similarities so that they're at least plausibly similar to each other. Weird sexual dimorphism is a thing that happens in nature and IMO a different complaint from genderlocked races.

I'm not disappointed at the misogyny (I agree that it's not worth being seriously down about it these days.) I'm disappointed in everything else about it. Genderlocked races are a lazy excuse for half-realizing a concept. Especially in a game where effort has already been made to have more effort put into those concepts (cat boys becoming playable etc.)

It concerns me. Because that makes me question where that effort has gone and why it's gone into whatever rather than in maintaining already established standards. It reminds me entirely too much of that freakin' plant pot of 1.0 and how it came to be.
Only this time it might turn out that ShB's 1k polygon 150 shader flower pot is the fat cat people that are NPC only. If the effort has been put into them why can't we play as the fat cats then? :v:

If a player buys the expansion and pays for at least two months then Squenix just got AAA game money for XIV. Even if you took all of Stormblood from 4.00 to 4.99 I don't think that can be called a AAA game level of content. So I really don't buy it when they say they're having resource issues that aren't their own fault. Their team refuses to adapt or do anything to improve their situation at all. Especially with a company like SE, any issues with resources are about time, not money. There's diminishing returns on productivity and content creation after a certain point, not the least of which is effective management by a project lead.

The story I keep hearing is that the Au Ra were created that way for the Japanese audience, who were loudly clamoring for smaller, daintier female characters than hyur could be. So the lady au ra were created for them, and are supposedly quite popular over there.
