Those mechanical fuel pumps are still used on the 6.2 & 6.5l humvee engines. They loving suck.

Yeah, it's just a supply pump. The injection pump is much easier to change in comparison. Unless you drop the bolt down the front gear housing. Glad I never hosed up like that.

I suspect the argument was that a mechanical pump would be less likely to fail due to contamination. I can see that side of it, but to be fair, electric lift pumps have come a long way.

Yeah, the rare occasion of left hand thread. Well, rare depending on application. Most tractor trailer hubs were threaded left handed on one side to prevent spin-off of lug nuts. Because 1000ft/lb from a 1 inch impact isn't enough to keep them from breaking loose.
