Ditto on this, there's a handful of skills that don't require huge investment. The fire resistance talismans make Wheelmonks less painful to fight, and the ninja anti-paralysis pills make the second boss hilariously easier. Everyone has probably heard about the sloth talismans by now too. There's a self-regen charm in the magic tree that's not too bad for topping youself off, give yourself a buffer when playing more aggressive, or just for a fight with multiple mobs.

It's just that the skill trees have a lot of insanely specific, or outright useless skills thrown in there and make it pretty intimidating to pick what you'll need first playthrough.

Yeah, I finished my first playthrough at level 110 and I didn't have more than 27 points in any one stat, and I didn't feel at all limited. I think STR was the only skill that I didn't have much use for, and even that had enough benefits that I leveled it to 10 and I didn't regret it or decide to respec. The buffs and de-buffs available through magic the magic tree, as well as some impressive master skills, makes leveling magic to 20 pretty much a necessity for any build IMO.

The leveling system is much more forgiving than Dark Souls. Each stat provides a number of benefits, and it's hard to mess up too badly as you progress through the game.

GET LOSE, YOU CAN'T COMPARE WITH MY POWERS
How do level 2/3 ninjitsu/onmyo skills work? Do you have to use additional jutsu slots to equip a second set of 7 kunai, or does it reduce the cost AND increase how many you get?

You equip a second set, but usually the second set is cheaper. This also means you could just equip the second set for less than the first and equip something else that you couldn't before.

...oh, okay, that's a decent middle ground. So you reduce the cost of one instance but still have to pay the combined amount if you want both. That means jutsu slots are fairly limited if you want multiples of stuff, but fair enough.

Can any ninja class people comment on the usefulness of caltrops? They seem like such a specific situation. Wondering if they could work on bosses

They're basically an instant Lightning proc on potentially a group of enemies. They're less powerful than Sloth or even an actual elemental debuff, but they're also must easier to inflict. I keep them on my 2nd hotbar and throw them out whenever I run into one of those dual-blade ninja Youkai bastards, keeps them from flipping all over the room so I can kick them out of stamina.

The ghosts of sawayama is the very definition of the run of madness

You had 1 million+ souls? Well you just entered a boss room with a yokai

You died and want to recover it? Too bad wheelmonks just rolled up your rear end in a top hat sideways

Nothing matters anymore and you just want to speedrun back to the boss? Oh you took a wrong a turn

Going the right way? Oh you got hit by ninjas along the way.

Oh and now there's a yokai and a ninja in the boss room

The Sacred Brush. It's your best friend, and it loves you.

Though yes, shrines do restore magic. Are you sure you're using your prepared jutsu items rather than regular collectibles? They have a green outline on the inventory screen.

The description on the sacred candle made me think it was something you were supposed to use near a bunch of player graves, but it's actually basically a ghost merge shard from lords of the fallen. Very convenient if you die in a boss room and decide you want a different spirit animal for the fight, but don't want to lose the amrita from your grave (I assume you lose it if you recall your spirit animal at a shrine).

Ah, yeah, none of your stuff naturally recharges when summoned for co-op. That's where the Spirit side of a Magic/Spirit build comes in. With Tengen Kujaku, you can even keep inflicting Confusion without any spells.

Speaking of magic, the last couple of cycles of Twilight missions gave me an opportunity to revisit a couple of the trickier early bosses for their Crusher titles on POTSt. Here's the trophies I brought back:

I've been rolling suzaku for the amrita bonus and the life insurance policy is nice too. I don't know if there's any perks that make the others worthwhile for me personally as I've only tried like 2-3 others.

I assume he's soon - I just unlocked the Mystic Arts for magic and Ninjitsu in what I assume is the final area. Level 145 twilight missions don't gently caress around. :catstare:

How dramatic is the leap to NG+, by the way? Do I need an ultimate poopsock build to deal with it, or is the curve gradual enough I can stay on top of it relatively simply?

You'll be fine since equipment upgrades will come fast and furious at the onset and also you don't have to follow a linear progression like in ng. You start with the first three regions and all missions unlocked so you can sort of pick and choose the easier ones and leave the harder stuff for when you're better geared.

I was about to come into this thread and ask for stuff like this, actually!

I'm completely lost with Path of the Strong. At level 116 I'm currently using a katana and kusa blend, but my killing power has dropped so dramatically. I have both weapons divine, and a full set of Red Demon divine gear, but otherwise I'm clueless about what I should be doing. Pumping amrita into Saorise to get her bonuses up, but otherwise...nada. It's not that I'm struggling to kill anything, it's just that it's taking a lot longer than before and feels like something's wrong with my build.

Unfortunately all the POTS information I can find details optimizing gear and builds for people who are already blazing through the game mode.
