How itchy? I thought I had extremely itchy bites on my feet that turned out to be contact dermatitis from some leukotape I was wearing (but the bumps didn't show up until a few days after I'd worn it.)

But if you're sure it's bugs then possibly chiggers--they love to get into tight places like under socks.

Facebook already knows your phone number thanks to your friends uploading their contacts, just give them what they want.

I was about to post this. Just assume every huge rear end company already knows everything about you worth knowing. The world is hosed, and unless you're an actually important person like politician or CEO or whatever who gives a poo poo? They'll just use it to fractionally better personalize the ads they'll shove down your throat anyway.

Solution: don't have a Facebook account. Unless you've been using it as a personal photo album for the last ten years, there's little value there these days. There are a plethora of other ways to keep in touch with people from high school you no longer talk to that don't involve selling all your personal information to the Nefarious Zuck Empire.

This isn't really remotely correct. There's a lot of places where Facebook Messenger is the preferred form of communication, Facebook is the only event calendar used by pretty much everyone organising stuff, there's a lot of subjects where discussion is almost exclusively available on Facebook, and for selling/buying/renting things it's often the prime option

kedo
Nov 27, 2007

If the OP is concerned enough about privacy that they don't want to give their phone number to Facebook, the only real option is "don't use Facebook." I won't dispute that lots of people use the platform, but just because it's a preferred form of communication/event scheduling doesn't mean it's the only one.

There are hundreds of other platforms out there that do the same things Facebook does, often better. There may be fewer people on them, but that's not always a bad thing. I'm going to go out on a limb and say there's literally nothing that's absolutely critical to your life on Facebook that does not exist elsewhere in some equivalent form.

this is entirely a different thing from there being "little value" there. no one's saying its the only platform, but its very useful specifically because of how many people are there and what they use it for.

if you are using it to keep in touch with a particular group of people or follow certain things that are only on that platform then you are getting a pretty specific value out of it regardless of the features of other platforms

that said if privacy is a major concern its true the solutions are either dont use it or just get some bullshit phone number you dont care about and make sure your information is fake

kedo
Nov 27, 2007

Fair enough. I guess if anything I should rephrase my original statement that there's "little of value there that can't be found elsewhere."

I'm perhaps subconsciously responding in part to the people in my life who throw up their hands, saying, "I hate Facebook, but what can I do? Where else will I find people selling [niche thing on marketplace], or talking about [niche topic], or posting cool events in my area?" and I'm like, have you even looked at the rest of the internet? People are doing all this stuff all over the place, it might just take an extra 20 seconds to find it.

Aaaaaanywayyysss.

Even if you don't have a Facebook account Facebook probably knows your phone number because someone you know has probably uploaded their contacts with your name, email, phone number, etc all together and if you ever make an account Facebook will helpfully suggest you become friends because it knows you know each other.

This is not necessarily a huge problem, depending on what you're doing with yourself. Wanting to free yourself from consumerism shows a healthy self-awareness, and if you're already striving to improve your criteria for happiness, eh, maybe don't sweat it overly much. A little material pleasure never hurt anyone along their way of fulfillment. Money can't buy happiness, but it can rent it while you figure out how to get it for free.

I'm not a lawyer but if you both agreed to not be near each other and she left on her own choice for a few days then probably not. It varies by jurisdiction but eviction usually refers to something very specific and is a specific legal proceeding.

Probably, but the difference between a 2c and a 4c increase might be the different between lovely and literally dystopic, so all work we can do remains crucial

It's true* but it doesn't help you much.

*Those companies include entities like the coal conglomerates of China that are state-owned, the Saudi state oil monopoly, etc. And of course the normal multinational oil, natural gas, and coal companies. You have to go quite far down til you get to things like international shipping companies.

theHUNGERian posted:

There's not really anything you could possibly do besides convince people to use less coal, gas, and oil. While there's plenty of ways you might campaign to move other companies off of polluting in ways besides greenhouse gases, there's little to do with a coal or petroleum company and their greenhouse emissions responsibility, besides organizing a mass movement to use less of them and instead an alternative.
