"Oooh, got a little too serious. You okay there, little buddy?"

not going to look it up, but I think Hugo Boss designed stuff for the SS but not the Wermacht grey uniform. So, the stuff Doogie Howser is wearing would definitely be a satire of Hugo Boss

Since always. Dude was a nazi and once the war broke out he had factories producing military uniforms, but didn't design them. Hugo Boss did design some nazi gauleiter uniforms (party officials, the guys in brown), but not arny or SS uniforms.

There's a similar legend that Coco Chanel did the altwrations to the old Prussian uniforms that became the grey reichswehr abd wehrmacht uniforma.

I'm kinda surprised that they didn't mention that one of the more surprising things about Starship Troopers, in retrospect, is that it came out in 1997 and not post-9/11. Like, there was definitely a time in the '00s where I knew people who had just seen Starship Troopers and were convinced it was this really sharp commentary on the US's over-reaction to 9/11 and the lead-up to the war in Iraq. Then I'd show them when it was released and their minds were blown.

Of course, I'm not at all surprised to see the youtube comments filled with lovely Heinlein fanboys trying to talk about how the movie sucks because it wasn't like the book. The book was fascist dick-sucking bullshit. Heinlein was pretty terrible overall, and I have no idea what it is about his work that seems to draw a particular type of nerd who will defend it to the death.

I am a Heinlein fanboy and I hate the movie. I also know that if they had changed the title to absolutely anything else I would have loved it. Heinlein was a lot of things but fascist really wasn't one of them later in his life, he was more into free love/weird sex to be honest. (see Door Into Summer, I Will Fear No Evil, Friday, Stranger in a Strange Land, Moon Is a Harsh Mistress).

Roughnecks is awesome though.

True that, out of "the big three" (Heinlein, Clarke and Asimov) only Asimov seemed to be pretty sex-less, story wise. The other two, gad drat.

I understand the satire part but it's pretty dumb to refuse to adapt the story of the book when you could literally slap another title on the movie and change nothing.

I sort of liked the third Starship Troopers film. It didn't quite have a budget, but it was fun.

It was a lot better than the second film, but I almost want to watch Troopers 2 again to see if it is more along the lines of being an underground revolutionary piece of propaganda compared to the state propaganda of the first film.

If looked at in that way, it sort of casts a more negative view on the Federation's war, leadership, abilities and attitudes, puts some doubt in the audience as to the certainty of Federation authority, etc.

I like slow movies but I found it pretty boring. The trailer is great, though.

The Shining is a good movie, that doesn't make it a good adaptation. Starship Troopers the movie isn't a bad movie either but it is a bad adaptation.

Heinlein having a boner for the military doesn't make him a fascist and it doesn't make him a follower of fascist philosophy or else you might as well call every military careerperson a fascist. The rest of his work doesn't hold up ~fascism~ as a philosophy either. The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress is about a colony breaking away from a larger power, which is the story of a lot of present day countries. If I bothered to read the rest of his books I could probably find other examples.

I don't even like Heinlein and you people irritate me.

In the novel, didn't someone get executed or something for punching a superior officer because they literally didn't understand the difference between them taking a swing at a superior in the heat of the moment and another soldier beating the hell out of the superior during a sparring practice?

edit: Apparently, the character could have been executed but had it changed to lashes and dishonorable discharge.

An advocate or follower of the political philosophy or system of fascism. Heinlein was a Democrat. Shining is a terrible adaptation but an okay movie.

You mad bro?

Authorial intent matters plenty but Heinlein didn't pursue fascism with his authorial intent. He pursued free love and freedom from Christian moral authority because he found it so stifling, not that anyone here except the self professed fan has touched on it much.

If you people can come up with textual examples supporting your points than go right ahead, it'll give us something fun to talk about. But if posters are going to pull "Heinlein was a fascist!" with no support than I'll take it as seriously as it deserves -- which is not at all.

edt: jesus christ spacecop is terrible

the only part i've laughed at in 40 minutes is when spacecop falls into the trashcan and yells "Oww, gently caress my balls!"

listening to the commentary track, there's a part where Rich says that he was nervous to star in spacecop because "When you think about it, I have to carry the movie... while also being monotone and dull." Yes, that is exactly right, Rich. That is why this movie was a bad idea

Whenever I see clips of Starship Troopers I'm always shocked at how well it holds up visually. The CGI has a certain verisimilitude that most big budget movies nowadays don't even try and aim for. CGI now is often colourful and flashy in a way that makes a film look and feel like a cartoon, while Troopers uses subtle, earthy tones for the bugs that land so much better for me.

From a few pages ago, but one of the reasons that Starship Troopers holds up a lot better compared to stuff around the same time is that there were a limited number of visual effects studios available at the time, and a lot had been booked up at the time the movie was being made. So a lot of stuff that would have been made using ropey CGI for the era was done using traditional stuff like models, in particular all the stuff in space. I think the bugs were the main thing that CGI was used on.

The other thing is that actual sets and design was used with the CGI, instead of "lol film everything in front of a greenscreen and plaster it with shiny CGI" LOOKIN' AT YOU GEORGE LUCAS
