Kopitar and Toews/Kane are on deals with a $10m+ cap hit that end in their late 30s so McDavid at 14 til 29 or whatever isn't that outlandish.

something between 6-7.5 for Draisaitl puts him above Drouin, on par with Tarasenko and probably around what Pastrnak is going to get, which seems about right IMO

A real elite team player takes salary well under his earning potential because he's a superstitious weirdo who likes repetition because he wants to give his team room to be the most competitive

Yeah I stopped maybe 2 years ago and started casually watching Sharks games instead (went to the final meet-up in Vancouver this season and it was great hahahaha). Sbisa still being on the dumpster fire team made me snap (and I'm loving gutted about Burrows too). I'll probably spend my time between the Sharks and Canucks.

Also Edmonton continues to be bad at trades I see. Excellent.

If you want to win its not a bad strategy. Marchand took a huge pay cut for the Bruins too.

Nobody has ever received the max, I don't think.

20% of your cap space on a guy who play less than 10% of the available skater minutes seems really questionable to me.

And also the CBA let him play with a cap hit over $3 million less than his actual earnings during his good years :v:

that seems like a terrible way to evaluate a contract. what if that player scored 2500 goals a year but could only play 8%?

Good Soldier Svejk

I mean don't get me wrong, McDavid has absolutely every right to ask for it and the Oilers would be absolutely stupid not to pay it, but it limits their potential during his most valuable seasons.

Even if McDavid didn't get a max value contract the Oilers would just spend the cap space on guys like Lucic and Russel so they may as well just give him the money.

Considering McDavid still has one year of his ELC on top of his RFA years, what's the rush to sign him to a max contact? The Cap ceiling isn't really moving much and worst case you just match any offer sheet (lol) if he signs one.

the pens have pretty much shown that it's possible to just pay like 4 superstars and then get the guy playing the trumpet in the street for change after the game to play wing and throw his brother on your 3rd pairing for league minimum, and you can win cups.

Regardless, the real concern is cap hit. I'm not sure how they can swing it now,but i imagine if they pay him 14 million, his cap hit won't be nearly that much.

I'm not clear on how the Oilers could possibly get a cap hit less than $14 mil unless you think he's going to take his prime 27 and 28 year old years at a lower rate?

7 years 10M/per seems reasonable to me. He's obviously better than almost everybody, with maybe the exception of Crosby and Kane (and I'd probably prefer McDavid for non-hockey reasons even if Kane WAS better) but you don't want to limit your ability to add players, especially when your D and forward depth still need some help.
