There was a fellow on from Labour in Northern Ireland this afternoon on BBC NI radio robustly defending Corbyns comments and laying into people trying to make political mileage out of the past, but even he paused to comment that as a socialist he thinks the Labour left made a fundamental mistake in the 70s and 80s and drastically misinterpreted Irish republicanism and bear a degree of responsibility for the hardening of sectarian headcount politics by undermining cross community solidarity socialism.

That's pretty much where I stand too tbh

Someone said it in this thread before but I liked it- Imagine if back in the 90s someone had said we'd one day be talking about elder statesman Gerry Adams and religious fanatic war criminal Tony Blair.

2015 General Election

Tories - 36.9% of all votes cast, 330 seats
Labour - 30.4% of all votes cast, 232 seats
UKIP - 12.6% of all votes cast, 1 seat

The Tory party moved to the right after Brexit and the UKIP voters went to the Tory party. Now that the Tory Party have put their UKIP Doppelgänger Manifesto out they're falling in the polls and Labour are making gains because their Manifesto is really good.

Which bit is 'nonsense'? Labour are still miles behind the Tories and heading for a heavy defeat even though the Tories have hosed this campaign up.

This is a consequence of being so far behind in the polls heading into the election campaign.

I haven't a clue what point you're making here.

Labour were at 25% in the polls. I explained that they had room to recover for the listed reasons. You called it wishful thinking. Exactly what I described has happened. You said Corbyn had hosed Labour beyond belief. This is obviously not true given the 9-10% recovery in the polls. The fact that Theresa May being the new Brexit cheerleader brought a lot of leave voters in to the Tories is no great loving mystery. But hopefully the Wales poll today is an indication that even leave voting areas aren't unwin-backable when people start paying attention to the real choice they have on offer.

There's still just under three weeks to go and Theresa May is loving up everything and Corbyn is doing great. If Corbyn comes close to beating May then the last two years of backstabbing and undermining by the PLP will have been the biggest wasted opportunity by Labour since 1997.

Best case scenario is that Corbyn wins and makes the country a better place for everyone.

Yeah. I think May's massive lead before the election may just have been a mirage caused by people not really giving a poo poo and just vaguely absorbing the negative stories about Corbyn and the positive ones about May. Now that they're actually seeing the two candidates for real it's a completely different game.

Pissflaps posted:

Labour gained 9+ points across basically every poll (except that Welsh one where they gained 16 instead), and that was before we had several negative news cycles about the Dementia Tax and May's embarrassingly awful u-turn and interviews today. I imagine it has done a lot of lasting damage to her considering that her sole selling point is "strong and stable leadership" and everything she has done today implies she is not remotely capable of delivering that.
