My God, it's full of Horatios!

So the goon enthusiasm tempted me to go back into the game and push a bit further, and I’m glad I did. Once you get into the meat of the game, which is running a merc company, it gets way more fun. I still haven’t done the first proper story mission, and am just wandering around building rep atm.

Some thoughts:

* The first few tutorial missions really drag. The first procedurally generated skirmish, OTOH, is great. I feel like the initial 5 minutes would have been better if you started with the mercs already up and then adjusted the story around that, but maybe newer players need the tutorial?

* My mercs differentiate themselves in the marketplace by their strict “no escort missions” rule.

The shadowhawk is maybe a little op as a starter mech

until you strip it down and idiotically put it back together like a moron and it spends over a month in the bay, gets rebuilt, performs like rear end so you spend another month putting it back the way it was

It punches good and has enough guns to run over lights, but it falls off once you start running into other medium and heavy mechs. Not enough tonnage for guns when fighting other big mechs.

So uh are AC2s ever worth putting on a Mech? They're just so goddamn heavy at 6 tons (7 with ammo), and do so little damage. Any mech with enough wiggle room to mount one can almost certainly mount an AC5 or 10.

If Autocannons shared ammo across type I could maybe see a niche to fill out a heavier mech, but as it is they just seem like a total waste of tonnage.

I'd argue the Vindicator is moreso.

Really, the Blackjack is the one outlier in your starting crew, they're not the best (mostly) mediums in town but they're all pretty solid.

except for the blackjack eef

fwiw the nvidia drivers that came out today solved most of my performance issues

also i put a/c 5's on my BJ and it became about 1000% more tolerable. had to give up two MLas and a little armor though

Be realllllly careful about choosing salvage. Some of the weapons are ++ gear, and it doesn't raise them in the item order or mention that fact, you just have to scroll the whole list and look.

The Spider is really good early on. Its ridiculous jump jets can gently caress with the AI a ton if you flank around them and it probably won't die in 1/2 skull and 1 skull missions.

Its good enough to last you until you get salvage for a good mech.

You probably overheated them during the mission. Every time you do you take a tiny bit of internal damage to all components, and its stupidly easy to do on the Argo mission since the moon environment means heatsinks are 60% effective.

It is straight up :10bux: but you need to hit a point in the story to unlock the ability to stat upgrading your ship (it isn't very far in).

You helped secure the Argo, but you got paid for that mission. The employer took the space ship.

:stare:

I put reinforced dfa legs in it and all the small lasers plus a shot ton of heat sinks and a large laser and a few meds for while it’s closing the distance. Max JJs natch, near max armor with max on legs.

All it does is jump on everything and murder it. Stuck my scout on it so it moves as a medium. Reserve to end, DFA to core whatever heavy is a pain in my balls, soak whatever the neighborhood locust or commando can throw out, then jump back into cover.

It is hilariously broken in the best way.

Here's a design criticism: it sucks rear end that the story missions tell you could to bring certain kinds of mechs yo them without just telling you straight up what they're going to be about. How about I make the decisions about what kind of mech will be useful and you just tell me what my dang goals are.

I'm not just mad because a certain story missions past the Argo feels like an annoying difficulty spike :argh:

The AI in this game makes some questionable moves sometimes but it is right on the money ruthless when it senses weakness. My blackjack fell down during the prison break and every single one of them ran over to it and did a called shot to the torso. Commander's out for 110 days or something ridiculous like that.

Kinda too bad the commander has plot armor, I think it'd be neat if somebody else just got promoted to the top when the CO bit it.

Just had my first mission from hell. Battle mission with reinforcements. Up against 1 Wolverine, 2 Defenders, 1 Locust, and (reinforcements)2 Defenders and 2 Striker vehicles. I lucked out and snagged the reinforcements first and the wolverine charged ahead of the rest and I took it down without any real issue- but the Defenders have crazy high stats for medium mechs (their drawback being heat) so they and the locust really put a hurt on my guys. Multiple knockdowns, pilot injuries, and damage so bad it requires a refit on 3/4's of my mechs. It was a 1.5 skull. Doesn't really feel worth it in terms of salvage and money..

A 2.5 skull assassination mission went sideways and I had to fight off an enforcer, shadow hawk, vindicator, hunchback, plus some lights I don't remember, and an orion, at the same time.

I got everyone except the orion (the target) but by that point my two remaining mechs were too beat up to scratch it. First failed mission and I lost my two best mechwarriors.

First real setback and it's rough but the overall game feels great. I'll definitely be considering 2.5 an entire difficulty level above 2 from now on.

Do enemy units ever break or flee? It feels like they should but there've been quite a few missions where it ended with my heavies vs the last surviving light that runs up and punches my mechs in the knees. :3:

That's how I lost glitch. In one of the intercept convoy missions, despite having having brawlers up front bracing most hits, the escort lance would just rail on my sniper mech non stop causing a knockdown followed up with called torso shots. I was thinking I might reload my saves to go back 2-3 story missions because the replacements pilots have been a pain to level up.
