I collect interesting cookbooks, and have one for you all, about the wonders of cooking with the microwave! Liver Pate is right at your fingertips: And Stroganoff Feeling brisket, but don’t want to take out the smoker? Why not microwave it for 90 minutes? And the pictures are just great Pork loin so dry it looks like bread: “Roast” goose that looks like plastic. Whole red snapper And for dessert I’ve also got some more genuinely interesting ones, like an English translation of a 1930s Hungarian Inn’s cookbook, and a cook book that was clearly used to hell and back. Every spare inch is filled with newspaper clippings of recipes.

I don't remember seeing microwave recipes that could be measured in hours. I guess I sort of assumed that they'd be burning themselves out or something at that point.

Lowering the power on a microwave adjusts how often it's actually doing any work rather than moderating power output like an adjustable light switch. /e: "Low" is ~10%, so only cycling on for a second every ten, or half a second every five, that sort of cycle. stringless has a new favorite as of 00:19 on Mar 14, 2023 |

I'm pretty sure my mom had that same microwave or one very similar to it. I don't think we ever used it though, mercifully.

I somehow missed the word "cooked" in the ingredients list and was kind of losing it a little over the thought of just blitzing some raw bacon in the food processor with your microwaved livers and leaving it at that.

This is not true in the case of Panasonic microwaves which have inverters that allow them to actually keep the microwave beam on, but have it contain less energy. As far as I know, Panasonic is the only one who does this.

I think blip switch microwaves are easier to make so I would imagine it depends how much you spend on your microwave.

The thing is this book is probably based around a lower wattage microwave, probably in the 600-800 range as opposed to the 1000-1300 range we have today, so you'd probably destroy anything you tried cooking like that.

The oldest microwave I've ever used was a huge 1600watt beast from the late 70's to early 80's. I've always just assumed they had gone down in power over the years. Maybe that one was an anomaly or meant for commercial use.

My current microwave let's me set a power level, but it's basically a percentage scale in 10% increments. And the better question is why? I don't know that I've ever seen a modern (as in the last 10 years) recipe that uses a power scale at anything other than high (100%) or medium (50%), and even then, that's for melting chocolate.

Microwaves were a magic appliance back when they were new, but while people tried to figure out a bunch of ways to use them for cooking, none of them really caught on at large. So it's mostly just a tool for thawing food and hamsters or for running specifically made-for-microwave food kits through.
