Maybe Vic is actually an alien with light mind control powers posing as a holo program or something.
He's one of those weird immersion breakers that remind you the show is a bunch of Californian entertainers. Yes it's a time honored tradition from the Sherlock bullshit to TOS using any old props and settings lying unused on the backlot, but Vic was the bridge too far. At no point did I buy that the DS9 crew would have wanted a program like Vic. It doesn't help that lounge entertainers are the most insufferable entertainers this side of mimes.

I hate Vic but would have been fine if they just had a casino or whatever with a recurring resident lounge entertainer instead of making him a special super program. Pretty much all my problems with him is the stupid importance the writing puts on him as something unusual, like it's a fanfic shilling the self insert.

It kinda worked as a progression from Bashir's 60s spy program.

What I'm really getting from reading all this ds9 cast and crew stuff is that they might not have been best huggy friends like the TNG cast, they were extremely professional, supportive, and loyal and everyone from writer to actor to producer were all very much on the same team. They eventually got an "us against the world" sort of attitude where they didn't care what the network or fans wanted, they just wanted to make the best TV they could, based on what they all agreed was good, and they're all very (rightfully) proud of what they made.

Is there any truth at all to that rumor about Avery Brooks requiring everyone to call him "Mr. Brooks", even fellow cast members? Or is that just some exaggeration that just happens to fit the eccentric character he's sorta built up around himself?

So I'm doing my first TNG watchthrough since like... SpikeTV TNN acquired the TNG rights like 15 years ago and did a weeklong marathon of the entire series. This may be the first time I'm watching Code of Honor.

And Jesus gently caress what an episode it is. This trash belongs as part of some TOS Season 1 bullshit that would have aired in the 60s. Early TNG borrows a lot of TOS's style in terms of writing/cinematography/especially music, but Christ almighty this thing should not exist. I now know why Patrick Stewart famously refused to unpack his suitcase after landing the job.

Like, I am now actively embarrassed to be a Star Trek fan in ways I haven't been for a long long time.

Are those the actual proportions of nu-trek ships? The nacels look so top-heavy or the supports so spindly. There's something about all the designs in nu-trek like they looked up some ancient secret geometry on how to make things look terrible through bad and unnatural proportions.

Sometimes I get the feeling that whoever designed JJTrek's ships is the same person who did character design for Kingdom Hearts.

oh boo-hoo, the episode's almost thirty years old now and nobody but turbo-nerds ever watches it any more

the final episode of TOS climaxes with a woman failing to successfully possess Captain Kirk because she succumbs to shrieking hysteria

Galaxy's Child features a man shouting at a woman because she's legitimately angry that he literally created a hostile workplace and by the end of the episode she's apologizing to him

Voyager and Enterprise both regressed to sticking women in tight catsuits for no good reason

I'm sure there's other examples I'm forgetting.

Spaceships are spindly. Real spaceships are kind of neat with these weird butterfly unfolding from blunt cylinders to long fragile trusses and panels and antennae.

I get the impression that the JJ ships were never meant to look good as conventional models because the filmmakers never really wanted to do the beauty shot thing with them to begin with. They're meant to have super-exaggerated features that pop out at you like a cartoon when you shoot them from crazy angles and I think they serve that purpose really well. It's just when you get a good look at the whole ship from a flat angle that it looks like a turd.

The push during ST09 was not that big tbh. A few things they planned got cancelled, like how there were going to be 6 or so tie-in novels that took place following the events of ST09 which would explore more of that universe, but they were axed at the last minute.

I think it's pretty embarrassing that Paramount or CBS or whoever it is won't license any ST games beyond that god-awful 3rd person shooter a few years ago, and other than that a couple of phone games. It's a far cry from the early 2000s when they were putting out something like 6 full games a year.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised considering how badly CBS has mismanaged the Discovery thing.

Honestly, the total conversion mods of high-quality games are probably better than actual Trek games would ever be.

I hear Stellaris Trek is coming along well. Armada 3 kicks arse.

Best case scenario would be if they contracted the people who are making Endless Space 2 to make Birth of the Federation 2 after it's done.

What I'd do would be have a six-episode game which is one overall arc but each game takes place during a different series and then finishes up with a team-up episode set post-nemesis using TNG/DS9/VOY/Spock/Scotty.

It would be 100% wank and the best thing ever.

For bonus points, have a movie mode where you can just watch the entire plot.
