Double lol as their whole reason for taking her off the list was to avoid a by-election.

I feel like a quite easy answer to that is "Now, spite."

Yeah, I'm not saying it's a smart plan.

Tory disarray and disaster would be so much more enjoyable if we didn’t have loving Keith and reeves to look forward to. At least Blair looked vaguely decent when the Tories last decided to descend into a shitshow

0.000% of Communism has been built. Evil child-murdering billionaires still rule the world with a shit-eating grin. All he has managed to do is make himself *sad*. It has, however, made him into a very, very smart boy with something like a university degree in Truth. Instead of building Communism, he now builds a precise model of this grotesque, duplicitous world.

I'd say Blair himself always looked like a shyster, but the party had good things in its manifesto (and there was still an assumption that that would be enacted).

Yes. There was general hope and optimism in 1997 that the corrupt Tories would gently caress off and a new progressive era would begin. Didn’t last long but it was nice while it lasted.

was scanning r/AskHistorians and there's a question based on the Telegraph clutching its pearls over academics saying that Anglo-Saxons weren't an actual ethnic group

the top reply is very interesting in terms of how "Anglo-Saxon" was a term essentially coined for political purposes, but also gives a perfect summary of 99% of British reporting on academia:

quote:

The Telegraph article is lazy. It misrepresents the state of academic research into early English identity by downplaying recent research, ignores tonnes of evidence and scholarship, and has no real interest in learning. It's shoddy tabloid content that does its readers a disservice, and exists to get a reaction from readers who want to slam researchers for doing their jobs. That gets good engagement, and therefore maintains the value of advertising space. Intellectual honesty, integrity, or curiosity were not factors in its authorship and we should not pretend that it is anything other than cynical.

e: same respondent has another good reply to a comment (now deleted) apparently trying to defend the telegraph article
