Still not sure I know how to play as Red. Reading his skills it sounds like it wants me blocking to build up his vengeance gauge but I don’t like sitting there blocking especially when I could be zipping around like a maniac. How do I play this dog?

I finished this game about three weeks ago and cannot stop thinking back to it and everything about it. Red XIII is amazing and one of the best characters to control in battle. As are Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Yuffie, Barret and Cait.

You hold down square to use his spin move that builds stagger regardless of an enemy's gimmick and moves him across the battlefield at light speed. tbh the vengeance gauge is just a nice bonus that you might have bar for when switching to him because the ai blocked correctly when not playing as him.

How do I play this dog? Honestly I just let the AI block for me, and switched to him after the fight's been going for a bit where he already has a vengeance bar built up. Then you activate vengeance mode and use his really strong vengeance mode skills (and/or blow poo poo up with Stardust Ray, possibly with Darkside boosting it).

Yeah Red is best utilized with anything materia or equipment related that gets his ATB up as fast as possible. Also the idea behind counterspin is that you block a non unblockable attack and immediate hit square to do a leaping counterattack. It's like that with a lot of the character mechanics, they're explained but you have to find out how they work best on your own. Prime mode for instance is the best ability for Cloud in the game against Bosses. But the first time you get the ability you're going up against Cactuars and low-level mooks so it gets overshadowed.

My Red troubles aside, game loving owns. I heard Gongaga was supposed to be poo poo but I loved picking my way through the whole map, the whole area was just gorgeous.

Gongaga isnt too bad when you accept you cant just go in a straight line from A to B. I wish you could zoom the map more though.

Gongaga was great, Cosmo Canyon was probably my least favorite traversal, but at least then you get to follow it up with the water farting chocobo
