The funniest thing is this and gay tank loving is one of the least crazier tangents this thread has ever veered into.

And it will be really wacky and funny!

So long as we're talking bad WW2 anime, I gotta bring up Pumpkin Scissors. It's a WW2 analog that manages to get everything possible wrong, from an anti-tank corps armed only with pistols to double-ended cavalry sabers to the concept of using scissors to cut a pumpkin. I mean look at this poo poo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGu_84pg_Pg

Also it's the only anime that depicts the Soviet Union or the Russian side of the WWII occult fiction. You hear about nazi moon bases, nazi cultists, nazi black magic, supernatural stuff, all of this appears in comics or graphic novels and even anime (Hellsing) but we never get the Soviets in anyway*. *Not counting Cold War era published DC/Marvel comics that I'm not old enough to have read.

Following more dumb age of sigmar stuff, I've kind of been left wondering what the role of skirmishers vs formations was in practise. Like, if hitting a flank is as big a deal as it seems to be portrayed, wouldn't skirmishers and light cav muller stuff by ramming them in the rear end repeatedly while everyone's trying to marching-pivot around them, or is this a deal where you have, like, screening skirmishers of your own to keep the other dude's off your back? Or is it just not a big deal if you're not also in a square for some reason? EDIT: I mean, I assume testudo and stuff are basically impregnable from any side, but presumably peasant levy in the middle ages or pike squares aren't quite the same thing? spectralent fucked around with this message at 11:53 on Nov 24, 2016 |

Regular rear end skirmishers are supposed to break up formation a little and maybe protect your skirmishers from doing the same. Or something along those lines as far as I understand. No fucken clue about light cavalry.

To expand on this if you're talking the gunpowder era skirmishes are often a company (or whatever) in their own right and join the line for the main battle. Before poo poo kicks off they harass the enemy formations and keep enemy skirmishes from doing the same and then get in line with everyone else when it's time to line up and volley at each other.

loving goons and anime, what is it with you people anyway, to move this thread in a tolerable direction: yesterday I went to an antiques mall and stumbled on a trove of Popular Science magazines from WWII. They were $3 a piece and they are AWESOME. They're....so similar to contemporary magazine/clickbait articles, but they're so about WWII stuff...it is fantastic. Here's some uploads of the more interesting things. From May 1941. The magazine is pretty bellicose despite the fact the war was still 7 months away. http://i.imgur.com/T9BV9mk They were seriously concerned about air raids in CONUS: http://imgur.com/a/Uo93P The A-24 "Dive Bomber" is incredibly good http://imgur.com/YgftGB9 An overview of infantry weapons just before things kicked off: http://imgur.com/a/4q8zK Life as pilot in 1941: http://imgur.com/a/8ZuEl 1942: The war kicks off, and our poo poo sucks, and we're getting our asses kicked, but you wouldn't know it based on this magazine: lovely stupid Axis weapons: http://imgur.com/a/AODYV "Ideas", Planes, and radios. The comparison of the Zero and the P-40 is my favorite thing. "Flies like a baby carriage" vs "Hard to fly" http://imgur.com/a/pVtF5 1943: we're starting to see the evolution of stuff; I'm shocked a lot of this stuff was publically releasable. Cover: referring to AP Seversky and his understanding of air power long before anyone else: http://imgur.com/a/39YFw NEW AND BETTER GUNZ http://imgur.com/a/HvYKy New planes. Note the "low altitude mustang"(it refers to the A model), and the "self sufficient bomber that needs no fighter escort": http://imgur.com/a/Atg90 1944: the war is won, now we need to start planning for the future! Awesome thing on the P-51: http://imgur.com/a/Neee0 New planes like the B-29 are going to really take it to the Nips. I'm also pretty shocked they have a relatively accurate sketch of a V-1. http://imgur.com/a/YzsmN Second favorite thing: the postwar plan, particularly the description of how vulnerable the US is. However, note that the main diagram essentially describes the plot of Red Dawn almost word for word to include correct geographic location. http://imgur.com/a/1u6nl Since we're pretty much done with the war, how about a discussion of TV? This is actually an incredibly prescient article: http://imgur.com/a/SO1SL Finally, the back page ads on all 4 magazines: http://imgur.com/a/Y9qsC ....seems about right. bewbies fucked around with this message at 19:40 on Nov 24, 2016 |
