My favorite local rap group out of Rochester, NY is comprised of two kids that go by 3elevn. Very good vocab and metaphors and extremely catchy hooks. http://mixconnect.com/listen/3ELEVN+-+Bread+x+Bombay+%7C+The+Last+Dutch-mid28236

I'm from New Westminster, BC. We have a band here known as the Devin Townsend Project. I would describe them as "experimental". Overall they're a good band that deserve some attention.

Perpetual Werewolf, who I mentioned earlier in this thread, finally finished their full length. It is good, but doesn't quite capture the intensity of their live shows. They have also unfortunately broken up. But still, one of the best unknown bands in the world. If you like weird hardcore, weird punk, and cool instrumentation, it's worth listening. http://perpetualwerewolf.bandcamp.com/

It's not just lovely scenester emo/hardcore like everyone seems to think, we got good stuff too! I've been playing around here for a few years now (I'll spare you my self promotion) and there are so many amazing bands, it's kind of strange that the area isn't known for it. (I'm glad you mentioned John Warren, I'm friends with him, Tin Can Collective is awesome) Bangladeafy (previously mentioned) were originally LI, and so was Lost Boy? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOJpLfVbMSo Got to see these guys open for Dispatch on Friday night here in Gainesville, FL and I have to say they absolutely killed it. Apparently they used to be a 12 member ska/funk/whatever ensemble, but have since reduced the member count to 4 and are sort of reggae/funk fusion. They are excellent. Check out the song 'Relations' from the below: http://www.reverbnation.com/Morningfatty/songs These guys are awesome.

Meet, Five Alarm Funk, a west coast funk group from Vancouver, and let me tell you, they're massive, their live concerts are amazing, and they're just really loving fun and awesome people. I literally cannot listen to their music without dancing. Maryland/DC based folksy Americana group Pretty Gritty. I'm on mobile and youtube is being a jerk but you can search them there or go to their page at prettygrittymusic.com. If you search youtube look for the song 'Scorned'; it's an older tune of theirs but pretty indicative of the kind of music they make. They started as a cover band mostly when they had a different name, but now they almost exclusively play original tunes. Last summer they travelled the States doing various gigs, and I think later this year they're moving to Portland. But for now they count as local to me so I'm allowed to post it!

I'm friends with a few guys in a kick rear end band from Tempe, AZ called Future Loves Past. A couple of them just moved out to LA and their goal is for the rest of the band to be out there in a year, I'm kind of pissed to be losing such a cool local band. Phoenix, AZ I'd have to say my favorite local band so far would have to be Black Carl. They have an awesome live presence, and the singer has some pipes. I guess it's best classified as funk rock? I was lucky enough to be at the Christmas show this video was shot at. They also put on a great show on Valentines day this year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pU-58I6x2Y Make sure to check out Hussy which is a very fun song, as well as Badbeat and The World. David Hasselhoff On Acid are kind of like an instrumental Mars Volta with a little bit of Dillinger Escape Plan mixed in. My jaw dropped the first time I ever saw these guys live. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-rnINWduJo Wrath and Ruin sit somewhere at the intersection between Meshuggah, Neurosis and Godflesh. Crushingly heavy, with lots of synths and a big industrial vibe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1d_Iw_M6itU Bummer is three young dudes playing Melvins-esque sludgy noise rock. Here is The Poly Opto who are notable for not being poo poo. Tends to sound like the more aggressive parts of Mars Volta. Long Division is post-rock and instrumental. They remind me of Maserati. Suburban Living is a dude whose real name is more than good enough for a rock star (Wesley Bunch). He plays dream pop backed by sexless Prince-style drum machines. Most of the rest of Hampton Roads is garbage, sorry.

I may be a Savannah resident now but I still consider New York to be my 'local scene' - mainly because I don't know any Savannah bands yet. I highly recommend going to see either of these bands if you're near New York and have the means. Killcode - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-qxywBrIRE Old school metal in the vein of classic Black Sabbath. Hair metal without the hair and makeup and silly homoerotic videos. PUi - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QBSVMxyHE4 Prog metal in the vein of (and completely different from) Tool. Unsigned and selling out the Highline. Unsigned and just finished up a european tour. They'll go places.

So I've lived in sunny Reading for almost ten years now and the local scenes are mostly rubbish. So that means my only option is to plug a few bands that my friends are in. I won't claim that they're any good, just that I like them and they're a lot of fun live. Plus free stuff. Mutant Zombie Foetus http://mutantzombiefoetus.bandcamp.com/album/- A mix of thrash/speed punk/grind/death and whatever else riffs they tried to play that day. All with not so great recording and lots energy. They've just put out what is probably their final EP... it's Half Life themed! Cephelopod http://cephelopod.bandcamp.com/album/cephelo-ep Self described as trying to play all metal genres at once. A somewhat chaotic pile of oddness ontop of an exteme metal base. They once claimed to sound like Enslaved, just not on anything they've ever recorded. Nyogtha http://nyogtha.bandcamp.com/ Some good old evil drone. Occult soundscapes, feedback, lots of candlelit live shows. Pretty much everything you'd expected from ultra downtuned, ultra long Sunn worshipping stuff. Evil noise. Plus they've just had an album out on an actual label.

If anyone is interested in an appalachian Bruce Springsteen/Mellencamp kind of vibe, I recommend Josh Nolan's new album Fair City Lights. They've been around in various incarnations (as Fair City Lights) before, but they're just now starting to get some recognition for the incredible talent the frontman has managed to pull together around him. Some guys I went to college with are in a doom metal band that blew up after playing SXSW. They're called Pallbearer. They're from either Conway or Little Rock Arkansas. They used to play 10 years ago locally, but now they've toured Europe and are going all over the country, but I know that band is broke as dead dog poo poo with the money. I like how they have pretty vocals to contrast with the buzzy guitar. e: https://soundcloud.com/ernestimesblog/pallbearer-an-offering-of crikster fucked around with this message at 18:40 on Apr 17, 2014 |
