ok imagine you have a fuckin' bus line that takes your idiot citizens into work. This is the Transistor Line! in the morning they all line up and load up onto the buses, fifty apiece. They hang out and wait at a place called the "Collector" station. This is cool, but who the gently caress is going to drive them? oh wait, there's this VIP line off to the side, that only bus drivers can get through. They bypass the main queue and go in through the "Base". So basically, for every bus driver, you can move fifty people (actually 51!) over to the city, where the "Emitter" station is. Boom, you can now move a shitload of people! If you have a shitload of bus drivers waiting (a lot of current available at the gate), you'll almost definitely be able to take all the passengers you get. But if you want to control how many passengers make it from the Collector to Emitter station, just limit the amount of bus drivers. boom good to go. Don't want anybody to get into town? Cut off the supply of bus drivers.

there are no new things, everything comes from the same protons and electrons that formed 400,000 years after the Big Bang, together with photons generated by solar fusion which spent millions of years random-walking themselves out of the sun's core hope this helps.

Otto Skorzeny posted:it's more than just tunneling, it's resistance going up (recall that r = rho*l / A). the problem is exacerbated by the fact that that copper interconnects (which we switched to because the resistivity of copper is much less than that of aluminum) poison the doping of silicon, so you have to coat them in a tantalum sheath to prevent that. the minimum thickness of the sheath that works is about 10 atoms, so until we find a material which can act as an effective diffusion barrier to copper with a thinner film than that or move on to non-copper interconnects we're not getting all that much smaller yeah we just need to think up of something new. it's really incredible how far we could take transistors though. maybe if there were easy ways that could be made to read an atom, there may be a lot of power there

maybe we could give up trying to make transistors smaller and faster and just be happy with what we have now i mean that stuff is pretty fast already
