I live downtown but it's a bad downtown so most places are closed at night so I'll just walk to the library to kill time I like looking at all the coding reference books from decades ago

That's because the majority of librarians have jack squat to do

I've owed the NY public library 100 dollars for over 18 years. I lost my library card and someone borrowed a bunch of VHS about the Algonquin Indians and never returned them

Be the librarian that knows the way and knows how to get programming done? Oh wait, library school teaches the opposite.

I'm at a library conference right now and it's actually cool and chill and focused around dropping sick memes and actual tech tool development. Wait only part of that was good

maskenfreiheit posted:Anyways, "The Fire and the Fury" has a 567 person waitlist (!) for my county and I'm too cheap to buy books. What should I read instead? I've got a cool book on the cia (Legacy of Ashes), Neuromancer, Godel Escher Bach... or maybe put something else on hold. I worked as a book shelver/processor at a library and I loved it! We started shifting around the fiction section just before I had to quit and it was such a great way to find interesting books. And when processing/linking things,, I got to keep up with a lot of new stuff that was about to come out so I'd actually remember to check it out later instead of just forgetting about it. I had to leave the job last month and I miss my old cat lady coworkers. I was actually kind of curious about how that Fire and Fury book was going to be handled, since the release date was so abruptly changed and it was going to be in high demand. Crazy to hear about a 600+ person wait list for the holds though! The last book I read because of seeing it in the library(I planned on checking it out but got it for Christmas) was Tenth of December by George Saunders. Sort of depressing in places but some interesting premises. The title story was really a bit of a rollercoaster. Definitely recommended!

bones 4 beginners posted:Have you picked up The Ghosts of Langley? It's another book about the CIA that recently came out(last few months). I thought it looked interesting. Also if you like science fiction, the Three Body Problem by Cixin Liu was really good! I think another poster mentioned it earlier. Thanks I’ll add these to my list

I used to go a lot when I was a kid. My family owned a restaurant so during the summer I would get dragged along whenever they didn’t do the normal 80s thing of just leaving a preteen alone at home for hours/days/weeks. Anyways, I found a public library nearby and soon ended up spending entire summers in its air conditioned embrace. I really loved when it rained since I could get a couch that faced the river in the kids section and then read spooky books all day.

I've been reading through Paolo Bacigalupi's stuff and it's neat but also really depressing. Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun is next and that's probably not gonna lift my spirits

ah the smell of decaying treated paper. the crinkle of heavy cellophane book jackets. the brief and anxiety inducing eye contact with a young woman as you explore the shelves of similar interests before darting down an unrelated aisle in panic. you check out with what you had in your hand. having checked out...something but nothing. you go home and slap your book against your forehead beet red in disappointment and frustration
