I did Poison for X/Y and the first two gyms (Bug & Rock) were a goddamn nightmare but then the rest of the game was mostly fine. It was a weird feeling being roadblocked by the first gym, much less it being the Bug Gym.

IIRC, you Morph a monster that appears in the tunnel that leads to the Underwater Reactor. You can't get in the reactor itself again but that doesn't matter. You morph that monster into a Guidebook (?) and that gives you Underwater Materia when you trade it with the old man in Kalm.

It only does that when only 1 party member is alive. You have to solo it which is why Vincent + Hades + Added Effect makes it free.

If you enter the fight with only Vincent alive it immediately puts its tentacles in vulnerable position.

I only specify Vincent because he has the highest possible magic stat. You can really use anyone.

Solo Runs are kinda weird because half the time the game ends up easier since the one character is getting 3-5x the experience as normal (depending on the game's normal part size, of course) and the extra levels end up boosting the offense enough to wipe the floor with regular encounters. Of course, the main challenge is surviving all the instant death attacks that inevitably pop up, and doing the runs with weaker characters/jobs.

Low Level Runs are more insane and I've seen enough that I'm pretty confident I'll never try doing one.

It's apparently possible to beat FFX with solo Rikku, no leveling up, no overdrives and no no encounters. The dark aeons can also be done without leveling up.

The amount of grinding required for either seems ridiculous. I heard Anima described as "understatted" after 200 hours spent increasing her stats.

This advice is confusing me.

1. Summons can only be cast once per level of the materia until you master it. So are you saying you should master this summon you get late in the game before doing the fight?
2. The Added Effect materia in your weapon allows you to inflict statuses with your basic attack based on the paired materia, or you can use it in your armor to resist the stats. It doesn't do anything when you're casting summons.

Get yourself down to a really low hp, use the accessory that gives you hp as you walk, up to 144hp. Then go into a battle and cast demi 2 on yourself to halve your health to 77hp. Use potions and high potions to get yourself up to 7677.

I wouldn't call it difficult or time consuming, but I would agree that it's pretty obtuse in a game where you typically don't use demi on yourself or use potions to get an exact HP amount, and I wouldn't blame a casual player for not thinking of doing something so specific like that. Figuring out that part really isn't easy imo.

Also, I can still remember finishing disc 1 and being like, "whoa, if every disc has as much content as disc 1..." which lol.

nononono.

I was making a small joke. While Ultima is optional (and as noted was the only optional weapon in the Japanese version), most people don't refer to Ultima when they talk about the "optional weapons". Ultima is no harder than any other of the final bosses, isn't too hard to find, and doesn't have any weird (or at least radically weird) gimmicks.

Emerald and Ruby are in a league of their own, which is why most people are referring to them when talking about the optional weapons.

Ultima is the one around the crater. Ruby is chilling in the sand around a certain Golden casino :downs:

Also the rewards for Emerald and Ruby are not unique (and in the case of Ruby, most likely pointless), where Ultima actually gives something unique. Emerald and Ruby are mostly there for bragging rights.

Though admittedly Emerald's reward is at least difficult time consuming to get the normal way.

Yeah, I am trying to figure out if it's more trouble to just defeat the weapons or do the grindy poo poo required to get the gold chocobo. Since I plan on grinding to 99 for the achievement anyway I figure I'll just take on the weapons when I'm superleveled.

They have gimmicks you can't easily solve with numbers. Not that it invalidates your plan but you'll want to guide it a bit ahead of time to make sure you have some useful materia leveling on your way to 99.

Hmm, this guide says to beat emerald weapon I should have mime and final attack. How do I get mime materia? Oh, I need a green chocobo. So I guess I will have to make these birds gently caress after all. What about final attack?

First, you must have Omnislash, W-Summon and Cloud's Ultima Weapon before the Secret Duel will be unlocked for you at the Battle Square. After having all 3 of these, equip the Ultima Weapon and talk to the girl in the Battle Square and she will say something about how great a fighter you must be and how you need a bigger challenge or something along those lines. Only then will you have the opportunity to fight in the Secret Duel. Only Cloud is allowed to participate and if you defeat all 8 enemies you receive the Final Attack Materia as a prize. Subsequent victories reward you will other prizes, mostly useless items, but you can win a Ribbon as well.

At this point I have all the final limits and I think I'm just going to beat the game and keep a save around if I feel like working on some of this optional stuff when I get bored, but I think generally life's too short for JRPG super grinding.

My Emerald Weapon clear was done right before beating the game and everyone was at 99with a zillion materia. I gave Yuffie her ultimate weapon and gave her the materia where she takes hits for people and 6 or 7 counter attack materia. However many would fit. Then I set her for max attack and max crit damage. Then she kind of auto-piloted the kill. I think I may have healed a couple times.

For what its worth, neither Ruby nor Emerald require anything super-fancy to beat. As mentioned before, Ruby is very susceptible to being paralysed and 99 Dazers is more than you need to tear through its 800k HP.

Everyone seems to forget, though, that Emerald is explicitly weak to Gravity damage. You don't need W-Magic for it, but thanks to that weakness to it and his absurdly high HP, Demi spells are really good for that fight. It's genuinely quicker to slam down a bunch of Demi 1s than it is to W-Summon KotR and Mime forever.
