From an LNP perspective, this seems like the worst possible thing to do.

Everybody stays mad. The religious fundies are mad they can't expel LGB kids. Decent people are mad that they can still expel Trans kids.

Its a bullshit compromise that is more work than just fighting to keep the draconian legislation as is. And all that work accomplished is that you look weak for compromising/backing down, AND you look like fundie bigots for hating on innocent Trans kids.

I know ScoMo is a hardcore fundie, so this is one of his personal bugbears, (see also the stupid amount of money he spent trying(?) to get rid of unisex toilets in parliament), but even so this is a huge political misstep.

Coz from your fascist to your hippie, all sides can point at it and yell that it is bad legislation.

the only reason it hasn't been more of a disaster for them so far is because labor have been galaxy braining themselves into taking the most convoluted equivocal both-sidesing positions on it that also don't make anyone happy, seemingly out of fear of getting wedged in western sydney or something

they could simply say "we want a straightforward, uncontroversial, religious discrimination bill without the statement of belief nonsense or special privileges for religious institutions so everyone is equally protected" instead of what they're doing and highlight how the bill will give christian hospitals and aged care etc. the power to fire people from minority religions

i still don't think they're intent on passing it in its current form like people keep scaring themselves into thinking is going to happen (i have seen this a lot lately) - their intent seems to be water it down with amendments into something more reasonable so they can both claim they support the bill & avoid the worst of it - but they've been managing it about as badly as they can, and it's totally unclear where they want to draw the line & how much they're willing to allow some bad parts to remain in the name of compromise

I haven't thought about those in years. Do they still make kids use them?

I never got mine because my handwriting was too awful but I think in either year 5 or 6 we were just all allowed to use pen anyway.

Teachers insisting on books being neat and tidy with all hand outs being glued in were bigger monsters than the pen licensing scheme anyway

listened to the religious discrimination belief in the house of reps and labor sounds like it is firmly opposed to most of the bad parts. took them long enough. specifically opposed statement of belief provision, overriding state discrimination laws, lack of protection against vilification, lack of protection for lgbt students at religious schools

i think the only remaining bad part they did not specifically mention and oppose is giving greater power to religious institutions to discriminate when hiring.

the weirdest thing is notorious weirdo andrew laming has come out against the religious discrimination bill, saying the new amendments don't go anywhere near enough to protect gay students. laming does not at all have a reputation as a moderate and has never particularly shown interest in lgbt rights, though he hasn't strongly opposed them either. like i'll take it but i'm baffled

Which is extra hosed because they lost.

They almost certainly could have got these laws through if they had made them part of a bill to legalise marriage equality without the whole plebiscite/national non binding postal poll torment.

A question:

Has there been any instance in Australia of any of these people being provably discriminated against for being Christian?

Anything that would justify a law being made to prevent such a thing happening again.

Rather than just making a law that makes it legal to discriminate against others because, and I quote, "God says its OK in this many thousand year old book that I havent read."

there are existing laws against religious discrimination in most of the state & territories, without the sort of harmful provisions the government is trying to introduce federally. reports are that religious discrimination claims make up a very very small percentage of existing discrimination claims under state laws. i don't know this for certain but i would imagine most of those are related to minority religions rather than christians being discriminated against.

If I remember right, one of Turnbull's concessions to the Hard Right to get the same sex marriage legislation through was to dig up Phil Ruddock to lead a review into religious freedoms, and Morrison ended up keeping the resulting review buried for as long as possible because the results were so unfavourable to them - along the lines of finding no real issues and that religious orgs had plenty of legal room to discriminate, which went over like a lead balloon as many people do not in fact like kids being thrown out of schools.

yeah, the ruddock review found no real problems with religious discrimination in australia but also proposed some minor modifications to the existing laws allowing religious schools to discriminate against lgbt students & teachers. this prompted criticism & fear that the government would pass laws to do so that override the state laws (not something endorsed by the ruddock review), which lead to morrison wildly triangulating and pledging to ban discrimination against lgbt students. this did not happen, but it made religious schools and the christian lobby very mad (on top of ssm), so the last three years have been spent trying to create some new religious rights to appease them while also not appearing to totally abandon morrison's previous promise.

labor mps outright saying the religious discrimination bill should not be passed now in parliament. finally!
