Motronic posted:While the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger (a 1/4 ton truck) the Bronco sure wasn't. That's based on an F150. It then became the Expedition, with the Excursion being similar but based on the F250/350. Sorry, I meant the Bronco II, should have specified. I'm aware of the distinction; Chevy pulled the same poo poo with the 2 Blazers, one derived from the C/K fullsize pickup, one from the S10. Point is all 3 small Ford trucks share a chassis (and grille). Also there are differences between the B-II and Explorer (the Bronco never cam with 4 doors, had a tailgate instead of a full liftgate, Explorer was the first year of the 4.0) but that's splitting hairs honestly. The rear window on the Bronco is weird as poo poo, though. \/side rear, yeah\/ Fender Anarchist fucked around with this message at 18:09 on Mar 13, 2014 |

Those side rear windows are supposedly crazy expensive because they're so oddly shaped. (Ebay says $200, which is, to me, pricey for a single window on a 26 year old non exotic car.) The B2 was a loving piece of poo poo. A friend of mine in one of the offroad clubs I'm in loves the drat things though. He built one pretty nicely and then managed to roll it 3 times (end over end trying to climb a ledge backwards, then barrel roll in midair, then end over end again when it hit the ground) and completely ruined it. He's been planning on building another he has sitting in the yard, but it's been... four years now... and he hasn't started yet.

Swedish license plates have three letters, a space and three numbers. They filter out obvious problematic combinations such as FBI and CIA, but they probably didn't think (or care) about JEW.

Slavvy posted:Sweet christ. Indeed. It's all Volvo running gear underneath, RWD with a 90hp B20. You'll be glad to know that only 7 were ever built I've met the guy who designed it, and he is every bit as colorful as you would imagine. He was an apprentice toolmaker at Jaguar from 1949 to 1951 and later took a civil engineering degree, with a specialty in internal combustion engines. He was the main Danish importer of Jaguars and Volvos for ~60 years or so. These days he runs a pretty cool car museum close to where I live. He also designed the OScar, which was a Cobra replica based on a home-made square steel tubing chassis and mostly Volvo 140/240 bits and pieces (including rear leaf springs). Engine options spanned from B18 to B23. A B23T should fit in there nicely, too. Only 20 were made, and mostly sold as kit cars, despite being fully-assembled and turnkey. Both the Joker and the OScar are featured at the museum in Nærum, in addition to a bunch of extremely cool old Jags, Alfas, Maseratis. And this, a one-off Volvo Amazon Special Coupé, which would have gone into actual production if the P1800 hadn't come along:

This is probably some myth I'm about to repeat but doesn't the glass filter (or reflect) away most of the rays (whichever one of the three radiation types it is) that causes the skin to darken? Fake edit: It's the UV rays and I might have been correct, partly. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12925188 Actual edit 2nd Edition: Apparently light, including UV, is the same type (electromagnetic radiation) as gamma and x-ray radiation, just less energetic. I have learned something today. Fattig fucked around with this message at 17:59 on Mar 16, 2014 |

Anecdotally, I have those super dorky spectacles that darken proportionate to the amount of UV light they're exposed to. On a sunny day I can sit them on my dashboard and they take absolutely forever to darken; even with the sun in my eyes they don't tint enough to make a difference while driving. But if I'm walking around outside, even on a cloudy day, they go completely dark in less than a minute.

MetaJew posted:From my time studying solid state and optoelectronics, and without clicking that link on my phone, the transmission spectrum of regular old glass should be pretty low for UV. It is. The transmission of light below ~320 nm is essentially zero, depending on the type of course. So some UVA light will get through, but UVB and UVC will not. It's the reason that you don't get a sunburn during long drives if the windows are up. Otherwise you'd get them any time you take a long trip.

I get trucker-arm like crazy on long trips, even with the windows up and now always wear a long sleeve shirt for roadtrips. I believe Slavvy about the Transition lenses taking forever to change, but my theory had been that it was the tempering of the windshied, or some coating, that made the difference. E: but, I allow that I may be misremembering having the windows up. televiper fucked around with this message at 01:47 on Mar 17, 2014 |
