Well, it was, but Austin didn't even exist yet. Thing is, it was all open, like you said. They could have built whatever they wanted. When they first built the place here I remember looking at the idea behind it and didn't even give them a year. However, MMC seems to be popping up in tons of places now, so hopefully sometime soon I'll have a big time sanctioned road course race less than a half hour from me.

Remember that the current 5.0 Mustang holds its own against the M3 on a number of tracks. Also remember that it's a muscle car, not a sports car. A live rear axle certainly isn't the ideal suspension layout, especially on a bumpy track, but it does well enough for the kind of car this is to not justify the significant cost of changing. I can all but guarantee that there are IRS test mules for this generation of Mustang. They're not ignoring it, they just don't see the value yet.

But the fractionally cheaper Camaro has IRS, and if the engine is a detuned Corvette ZR1 lump, wouldn't it have similar power to the Mustang had they left it as-is? It's a moot point. For the cost of something else with equivalent performance, I could just buy one of each.

CT's argument is that an IRS setup will still do better on a drag strip than a live axle will on a track (or the road). I'm not going to directly get onto that, but I am interested in coming at it from the side: If you're designing one car with an eye towards standing starts up a quarter mile, and another with more of a bias to cornering, aren't there other ways that you're going to lean to one or the other in your suspension design? I'd imagine that for drag racing you'd want to maintain maximum square-on contact patch under squat, for example, even if you have to sacrifice camber behaviour or whatever to achieve it, and the opposite being true if you're concerned about the twisties. Not that you're just going to fall off the road if moved from one environment to the other, but I suspect that rather than it simply being a case if IRS or not, it's more about the design philosophy that led to it. Would a Mustang with IRS, but still primarily intended to thump its way off the line on a short run, be substantially better than a live axle car on turns? Or would it just be a little bit better? Little enough that taking that same live axle setup and gearing it towards road work would yield a better end result?
