Istanbul seems to be effectively back under government control, Ankara still a question mark although. Government claims that a Coup helicopter was shot down over Ankara by a government plane.

when I sit back and think about erdogan and his career, I have to say that guy is a hard as nails motherfucker who took it all the way to the end, it's like, everything and the kitchen sink was thrown at him in terms of challenges to his political journey, even landing in the middle of bombing runs didn't faze the guy. it's over, his grip totally complete at this point such a shame he's probably going to bookend his career by going full autocrat. If only the Arab world could get a hard motherfucker like that who was democratic. Instead it gets mass murdering rabid rulers instead. gently caress this earth. watching all those civilians just walk up and successfully arresting those military guys is like watching a wet dream of what if everything went right in the middle east 4 years ago. It happened in Tunisia, shame it couldn't have happened everywhere else. but then again that's what happens when there's literally no civil society and the military is its own tribe. Those monsters. Forcing that poor tank driver to take such desperate action to defend himself from certain death at the hands of the unarmed civilians' shouts and sticks. I can only imagine what terror the helicopter gunship crews were in too.

I imagine the soldiers are realizing the coup has failed and would rather take whatever sentence they get than die shooting police/protestors. A lot of them probably imagined themselves saviours of the people during planning and anticipated broad support. This wasn't the reaction they expected.

Eej posted:How exactly are police getting soldiers in tanks to surrender? The soldiers in the tanks seem to be surrendering when they're put in a position where they'd have to either surrender or kill civilians. Most of these guys aren't super invested in the coup and aren't willing to kill unarmed people for it. Of course, that's not the case 100% of the time, as seen in that tweet in the last page.

lamentable dustman posted:So has there ever been a worse planned coup in modern history before because this one seemed really badly planned, I would think you would want to be able to take the President in hand Well, pretty much all of the "Soviet Republics" that sprang up across Europe in 1919 were pretty bad. The Bavarian one is my favorite, if only for this guy: quote:The government members were not always well-chosen. For instance, the Foreign Affairs Deputy Dr. Franz Lipp (who had been admitted several times to psychiatric hospitals), declared war on Switzerland over the Swiss refusal to lend 60 locomotives to the Republic. He also claimed to be well acquainted with Pope Benedict XV and he informed Vladimir Lenin via cable that the ousted former Minister-President Hoffmann had fled to Bamberg and taken the key to the ministry toilet with him. Good coup planning can't afford to ignore the crucial bathroom-key national resources.

Eej posted:How exactly are police getting soldiers in tanks to surrender? Their options are to: A: surrender to the police, probably get humane treatment and a trial. B: get overrun by an angry mob, getting the poo poo kicked out of them by people who have seen that twitter link with the tank and the guardrail, probably get killed. C: shoot a whole lot of civilians.

Most of them are probably going to get off lightly since they were "just following orders" and all. Nothing that'd make dying the more preferable option, anyway. It's the officers behind the coup whose heads are going to roll.

Why does anyone want Syria anymore? It's likely to become essentially uninhabitable within our lifetime thanks to global warming, the entire nation has been torn to shreds, and the remaining populace will remain bitterly divided and mostly ungovernable.
