Okay, so I’m pretty sure that by now everyone at least is aware of Steampunk, with it’s completely awesome Victorian sci-fi aesthetic. But what I want to see is Solarpunk – a plausible near-future sci-fi genre, which I like to imagine as based on updated Art Nouveau, Victorian, and Edwardian aesthetics, combined with a green and renewable energy movement to create a world in which children grow up being taught about building electronic tech as well as food gardening and other skills, and people have come back around to appreciating artisans and craftspeople, from stonemasons and smithies, to dress makers and jewelers, and everyone in between.

Also, I don't really have a problem with the underlying gist of what this is saying but it's probably the most tumblr way of articulating it:

Please invest in my Original Concept Do Not Steal line of -punk settings:

Fresco-punk, the future based on the aesthetic styling of mideval paintings. Everyone has a gold halo and impossible body geometry, and all technology is fueled by burning paintings of The Maddona.

Nasa-punk, where everything is built around the space exploration concept art from the 70's to 80's and cars run on Nasa's budget that totally didn't get cut this time. May or may not include Reagan lasers and space-commies.

Geno-punk, the society based on the Rwandan genocide where everyone rides airships fueled by child soldiers and malnourishment.

Only 5000 dollars and I'll send you all a calendar of original -punk settings!

Already funded, but this project is just kinda irritatingly throwing poo poo at a wall to see what sticks. "Temple run meets Mega Man! We've got EGGORAPPER in are game you guyz!!!!"

It doesn't look too terrible on its own and the soundtrack sounds good, but everything around it is kinda silly.

Yay let's raise $200,000 to make a lovely freemium game. Infinite running and shooting!? Those are really difficult to come by these days.

I think that was japan only, but yes it was horrible poo poo. But to be fair, that wasn't a good game even by lovely freemium standards. You could have basically made the same game in rpg maker.

I recall years ago somebody was making a first-person survival-horror game that was pretty much this exact style of retro-futurism, where you were on an abandoned base on the moon that was haunted by ghosts and you had to collect cassette tapes, but I can't remember the name or if anything came of it

Yeah, definitely. I was thinking about it from the standpoint of all the lovely tropes you see in cyberpunk (the protagonist is a naked chick only she has some wires coming out of her and maybe, like, some headphones and all the dudes are covered in pouches) but you're right.

In all honesty, the site could probably be handled easily. It's primarily text and links with some pictures and much of the page building is done by users due to the wiki format, so as far as I know they've subsisted on their Google ads thus far.

They took a big hit to their ad revenue a few years ago when Google caught on to the fact that most of their traffic was from people talking about wanting to have sex with little girls and they never really recovered even after they split all that off onto its own site.

Is the pedo slum what "Darth Wiki" is, where for some stupid reasons some pages have a black background?

And is that much of the site's traffic really from forum users, and not just people who just casually peruse the site and don't care about behind the scenes bullshit? I mean, I love Wikipedia, and while I am perfectly aware there's a whole galaxy of sperglord editor politics and wars raging right beneath the surface, I don't ever need to see any of that.

From what I remember: they had assloads of pages which were basically just categorizing wank material for various fetishists (I want to say they were all even tagged "Fetish Fuel") and these got into some extremely skeezy territory. Google was tipped off to this and pulled their Adsense stuff. As a result, there was a massive purge of any pages that might be considered "adult", to get back on their good side. Splinter wikis were created by others to rehost the deleted pages, because clearly the problem was with Google, not the content. I also think it came out that the coders assumed they were safe from this because ads weren't supposed to show on 'adult' pages, but this code had been broken for YEARS.

The "darth wiki" and some other cheerful cousin to that were just pages where you were 'allowed' to be negative and/or supercheerfulawesomeHYPERFUNWOOOOOO because the rest of the site needed to have "a consistent tone" or something.

Basically, Google pulled their ad revenue after finding that TV Tropes had a lot of content relating to hentai, other questionable materials like lolicon, and the tropes therein (as well as tropes regarding rape, including metaphorical kinds); adult content is a violation of the Google terms of service, and they interpreted discussing such content to be a violation.

In a panic, Fast Eddie and the rest of the admin team started purging any perceptibly adult content to try and get Google to relent. They suffered a lot of criticism for it, such as accusations of purging stuff that wasn't actually porn but just seemed too sketchy or close to the line.
