There are things you can do in books that are much, much harder to do in TV, like make it so that characters disappear in book two and reappear in book five, or have a character be actually another character in disguise. You can pull it off, but it's a lot more difficult. In my personal (objectively correct) opinion, games that represent the full potential of games as an art medium use gameplay to do it, and video games are really good at representing complex systems. Games like Crusader Kings 2 or A Force More Powerful or SWAT 4 all inform the players about their subject matter (medieval politics, nonviolent resistance, police action) through the method of unrestricted gameplay. They don't pause gameplay to give you a ten minute movie or text snippet about how medieval politics encouraged constant warfare and fratricide, or how nonviolent resistance works as a strategy, or how being a SWAT officer forces you to make extremely difficult decisions in a very short period of time. They just put you in the shoes of someone in the world and create systems that show how things work (or, at least, how the creators think they work, which is all art ever really does). There's biases for entertainment value, sure, but the same's true of all mediums. For example, take complaints about how Europa Universalis 4 is Eurocentric because of the way China works (-50% tech speed because Johan said so, meaning that by 1650 European forces can mop the floor with Chinese ones). These complaints are a natural outcropping of the fact that EU is communicating ideas with its players. And the way it is communicating those ideas is by the way the systems work. The way that communication takes place in Europa Universalis is analogous to the way it takes place in books and movies, but it takes advantage of the inherent interactivity of the form, rather than trying to ape the way that books and movies do it, resulting in a weird disconnect where the cutscene written like a tense nail-biting fight is the least tense part of the game because, "hey, I just got the boss's HP to 0, it's all good." e: ugh I can't believe I wrote all these faggy words. You know back when Gamepro/EGM/Gamefan were going EGM started calling a spade a spade trashing games that were bad but being pushed by a publisher trying to make their money back, then printed letters from publishers who threatened to pull advertising/pre-review rights if they didnt kiss rear end. EGM Refused and lost quite a few sponsors for it. that poo poo made me start collecting EGM. People who have been saying there hasnt been a fight against corruption in gaming media also don't remember the backlash at things like the Spike TV Video Game awards Doritogate and Gamespot firing writers over giving games that sucked bad reviews. The reason people who actually do play video games stopped reading all those mags were because they started becoming just advertisements. Game informer died when it sold itself to gamestop and became gamestop's way of pushing games they knew they werent going to move many copies of.
